Robyn defends green smoothies (we’ve got a few detractors)

Robyn Openshaw - Apr 22, 2012 - This Post May Contain Affiliate Links

A few prominent nutrition experts have made negative statements about green smoothies. Brian Clement, Caldwell Esselstyn, Colin Campbell, and a lesser name or two.

They may not realize that it’s a practice busy people are embracing en masse, and that it’s helping many people. I tackled that subject in writing recently, HERE.

But because we continue to get tons of email about it, I’ve discussed the subject on video here too!

Keep up your green smoothie habit. But add more good whole-foods habits, too—salads, legume-based main dishes, granola. Food you chew, where the fiber is less broken down. All of these habits will enrich your life. I teach them all, and more, in 12 Steps to Whole Foods.

I am sorry you have to defend green smoothies. Your testimony and instructions are thorough and complete if only they would have taken the time to read it for themselves. I am thankful for your willingness to share your knowledge.

  3. I thank you for taking the time to address this comment, Robyn. I have, too, been troubled by the recent comments regarding Green Smoothies and I have been reassuring my clients that green smoothies are simply one of the quickest, easiest ways to improve health.

As with many things in life, you won’t believe it until you try it, and once people truly experience the radiant health associated with green smoothies, they will truly know what a gift it is for their body. And this experience is just a gateway to even better nutrition. I find once my clients are comfortable with green smoothies, they move willingly to the next stage of incorporating more salads and more plant foods as well.

    Thanks again for addressing this,

    Sarah

I have gastroparis (gp), insulin resistance and hypoglycemic . With GP I cannot eat solid fruits and veggies without vommiting. Doctors recommend a refined carb diet for gp which contradicts the diabetes and of course is not healthy for you. A lack of nutrition amoung other complications has caused other organs to shut down (I recently had my colon removed). After attending your class in Boise, ID, green smoothies has been a way for me to finally get nutrients from food my body needs. I have been through 4 major surgeries this year alone and I can honestly say without the nutrients I get from green smoothies, I may not be writing this today. Thank you for all your efforts! You have certainly made a difference in millions of people’s lives, so who cares about a few that disagree 🙂

Robyn, blood sugar spikes are caused from FAT, not simple sugar as in fruit. Our bodies run on simple sugar and carbs. If you haven’t read the book 80/10/10 by Dr. Douglas Graham, please do. It explains the entire fruit myth (like we found out about protein myth a while back) in detail.

I love what you have done in the Green Smoothie movement. You were one of my initial people I came to when I cleaned up my diet and health. Thank you!

Great perspective! Helps for those of us who are trying to navigate through all the data, research and expert opinions! I’ve been doing green smoothies since I found your site 3 years ago. But hearing your ratios again made me realize I’ve gotten off track, probably too much fruit. Will try to get us back on track. Although given my sugar hanit before ( and my husbands), i still think a great smoothie with a bit too much fruit is better than m&m’s. May sound to those experts like i’m aiming low, but that is reality for most americans. But we’re trying to do better all the time! Thanks for all you do robin!

I think your green smoothie approach reaches a different audience than Caldwell Esselstein and Colin Campbell. These folks while trying to reach people who need help are the place people come to when all else fails and they are very sick. On the other hand you are appealing to the busy parent trying to get healthy food into their children. Granted the morning smoothie is not the end all to good nutrition, but it is a first step which encourages people toward further steps to prevent the disease that Esselstein and Campbell aim to reverse and cure. This is not to say that the good doctor and scientist are not interested in prevention as well. I think that most people only become willing to make such drastic changes in their diet and lifestyle when things are drastic. However many will give up sugar pops and milk for a green smoothie that their children will love, with a minimum of effort. This may not be the solution for the severely diseased, but it is a great service to our society as a whole to get more people practicing healthy habits, one habit at a time! You got it right for sure! Thank you for what you do, it is appreciated!

  8. Dear Robyn

I find your website fantastic. I was introduced to green smoothies last year in August. I had stroke a few weeks later. I know that green smoothies have had a dramatic effect on my recovery and I now no longer experience fatigue or many of the other deficits I had, post stroke. I have made a brilliant recovery. I am healthier now than I have ever been in my life because of green smoothies.

Your exactly right, green smoothies are the foundation. Other lifestyle changes are necessary to achieve long lasting health. Thanks again for all you information about smoothies, I have found your site invaluable in learning more about the big picture.

    Cheers

    Nikki

My body likes Green Smoothies FAR better than anything else I put into it ~

and tells me so in a variety of ways. When I’m consuming them my guts work better, my stomach begins to flatten, my moods stabilize, the cravings go away, my weight reduces, I have more energy, and I feel stronger. I haven’t changed all that much in my diet I’ve just added a quart of green smoothies a day. My diet is (on a scale of one to ten, one being McDonald’s 3 X a day and 10 being 100 % what Robyn recommends) my diet is about a 6. So you don’t have to be a saint to get the benefits of green smoothies.

  10. Very well said! Thanks for defending green smoothies. I totally healed myself of illness and lost my excess weight by mainly drinking green smoothies. I was on a raw food diet for 6 months and felt amazing but now that I have a baby I would never have the time for all the eating and preparing food I used to do on the 80/10/10 diet. That’s why I started making a complete meal out of my green smoothies so they would keep me going longer. I know my diet isn’t perfect, but no matter how good your diet is, it can always be better and purer. Which is why it’s not healthy for your state of mind to always be chasing after a cleaner diet. I sometimes believe in the ‘good enough’ approach. I enjoy good health, have enough energy most of the time and don’t spend all my time obsessing about what I am eating like I used to. A much more balanced approach. I love your approach of appealing to the average person. You’ve got to start somewhere and if that’s with one smoothie a day, then that’s a great place to start. Many thanks.

Robyn – What are your thoughts on a juice fast? I did one years ago and had great benefits but I didn’t find the juicer easy to clean and what not. Plus in moving the juicer was damaged so it ended up being a one time thing. The other night my husband and I watched “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead”. My husband has had health issues going on year number 2. I ordered 12 steps just today. Finally decided to stop waiting until I had the money for the whole kit and caboodle and just start with the digital download for now. Anyway – I have him drinking green smoothies pretty regularly but I’m thinking about having him try the reboot from the movie. Basically a juice fast. I’m going to do it with him too. I still haven’t kicked the coke habit even though I eat pretty healthy otherwise, and he has a lot of food addictions. I think it will take something drastic.

What are your thoughts? Could you do a “juice” fast with Green Smoothies instead, or would we be missing some of those benefits?

  12. I think a lot of these experts have never had or made a green smoothie. I’m pre-diabetic and I’ve never had a sugar spike from a healthy green smoothie. One from the mall, sure. But I don’t add sweeteners at home and that’s really what causes the problems.

Also, has it been proven anywhere that blending breaks down the fiber? I was just talking about this with my brother and we looked all over the internet and couldn’t find an answer. I’m guessing not, since you can buy fiber powder that is extremely high in fiber but is already broken down and readily mixes with a drink. Doesn’t seem to follow their logic.

    Keep up the great work!

  13. what a great video — I’ll be sharing this on the social channels, probably repeatedly. You were so articulate, yet patient and gracious in describing your colleague’s differing opinions. I very much respect this. Meanwhile, I’m excited to see your next project on non-toxic treatments. I think the time is right for that information!

Hi, Robyn. I love your site. I could sit and read it for hours. I also love Green Smoothies! One thing I have not been able to find on your site is what you eat. It would be fabulous if you could share a 3-day menu with your readers of your meals and snacks. If you have something like this on the site already, perhaps someone could point me in the right direction.

    Thanks from Canada.

    :O)

Hi Sherri, we’re about to improve the Search function on the site. But in the early days especially, I answered that question here on the blog a number of times—posts about “what I eat in a day.” I have staff who are better at finding stuff than me, but I think there are about 5 blog posts on that!
