Why Should You Choose Seasonal Produce?
Paying attention to the time of year you eat certain foods, especially those grown locally, can boost your already massive nutrition and reap many other benefits.
This practice also aligns with the Ayurvedic principle that we are genetically programmed to need and respond to the foods grown in that season.
Visit your local farmers market or search Google to find out which fruits and vegetables are currently in season when planning your recipes. This Seasonal Food Guide is a great resource for plugging in your location information and finding out what’s growing near you.
When food is in season, it’s much more available to find locally, not just from farmers, but at the grocery store, too. Oftentimes, food has to travel long distances before it reaches the produce section at the supermarket, and in the time from when it’s harvested to when it gets to your plate, its nutrients have been depleted.
Out-of-season produce generally has to come from other countries with a different climate, and getting answers about how the food is grown is nearly impossible. If the farms are overseas, pesticide usage may be regulated differently than in the U.S.
While many European countries, like Sweden and Finland, have banned certain chemicals or GMOs, others (Central and South America) have more lax guidelines. Many foods have to be irradiated, as well, on their way into the U.S.
The Best Seasonal Produce for Spring Smoothies
Spring produce is bursting with flavor and nutrition – perfect for adding to green smoothies!
Spring offers a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables that enhance the flavor and nutritional value of your smoothies. Some great options include:
- Wild edibles: Greens growing in the wild near you, use the Picture This app, to identify, and then ask Google if it’s edible. If it is, fair game to throw in the blender! Foraging isn’t just free; it’s better than that. Native, fresh-picked plants are also higher in nutrient density than greens you buy, because they haven’t been in the supply chain for weeks by the time you “drink” them!
- Fruits: Apples, strawberries, cherries, citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruit, lemon), mango
- Vegetables: Spinach, kale, Swiss chard, lettuce, avocado, carrots, beets, broccoli
- Herbs: Basil, mint, cilantro

The 2 Ingredients to Add to Your Smoothies to Create Healthy, Filling Smoothies
Your body needs healthy fats every day.
Plus, adding healthy fats to green smoothies makes them more filling, and your body can better absorb and use the minerals in the leafy greens.
I always add our Sprouted Ground Flax or Sprouted TriOmega (a combination of flax, chia, and broccoli seeds) to my blender of green smoothies.
While Americans seem obsessed with protein, some people do feel better with more protein in their diets. Adding protein to green smoothies can also make them more filling.
I love adding our clean, highest-quality protein powders to my smoothies.
Our Organic Superfood Plant Protein Meal is an amazing blend of plant proteins, high-nutrient greens like kale and spinach, and superfoods like spirulina and sachi inchi.
