Do all of GSG’s friends drink green smoothies?

The answer to that question is NO. Only about 95% of them. A longtime holdout is Kristin, very possibly my best friend, who is a newly single mom and stays with me 9 nights out of the month when her ex moves in with the kids. She also works for GreenSmoothieGirl.com, and she’s been my assistant at tons of my speaking events. She drinks up to 84 oz. of Diet Coke every day. It’s her safe place, her stress reliever, her energy prop.

Kristin has lost 38 lbs. in the past year. She has a thing she has done to stop buying junk food (M&M’s formerly being her vice). When she goes to the store, she walks past the candy aisle and sneers, says to herself, “I don’t eat that s%#! any more!” I don’t know if that’ll work for you, but it works for Kristin so I’m passing it along.

Despite being surrounded by offers of green smoothies and raw food, at my house, and listening to my enthusiasm for the topic nearly ad nauseum, she had yet to try anything except Hot Pink, which I have fed her for breakfast fairly regularly and which she likes.

How is this possible, you ask? Believe it or not, I don’t talk about food much when I’m not teaching about it. I probably talk about it less than the average person, in fact. I figure, when people want to know, they’ll ask. They know I know stuff.

Kristin has never asked. I have, on a rare occasion, made a mild comment. Like, “Hey, I really think your anxiety isn’t just circumstantial. Nutrition might make a real difference.” Stuff like that.

I watch and wait. I’ve been friends with someone for YEARS, or dated a guy for many months, before they really get motivated to start the GS habit. Finally, this week, Kristin announced that she’d started green smoothies the day before. Mostly because her oldest daughter (age 18) decided SHE wanted to!

Next day, she went to Costco and they had no spinach. Her 12-y.o. twin daughters cried, “Oh no, what will we do?!” LOL.

I asked Kristin what her experience was after 24 hours and 2 smoothies. She’s one who always tells me the truth, good or bad, because we trust each other completely. She said, “I feel happier today, not my usual anxiousness. I got up this morning easily and was alert–-I actually WANTED to go for a run.”

Then my friend Liz came over last night for a while. She asked me to tell you her tip. Like Kristin, she’s a busy, working, single mom of 6 kids. She spends two hours, every few weeks, making 40 GREEN SMOOTHIES and freezing them! Her counter is covered with green foods and fruits and she just bangs it out and fills up her big freezer.

Not a bad idea–then your nutrition for a few weeks is a guarantee. She takes hers to work frozen and it thaws there.

I also make a whole bunch at once and freeze them for the week. This way I don’t have to do it everyday with my tight schedule!

I like that tip a lot, but I’d like to know what they freeze the GSs in. Canning jars?

we had the same reaction at Costco this saturday! we walked into the big cold room and said, “oh no!! NO SPINACH!!” Costco really let us down, lol. It almost hurts to buy it at the regular store now it’s so much more expensive. I often call my new diet “The Costco Diet”. Maybe you should do an endorsement deal with Costco!!

  4. That’s awesome! Good for her. I found it funny what she says to her self when she passes the candy aisle, I do the same thing and I have been for a while. It’s neuro-association; we either link pain or pleasure with something. When I started to get migraines after eating cheese (my former biggest pleasure) it was easy to link pain to it and stop eating it! Etc… Good for her and kudos to her kids!!!!! They are literally saving their moms life. I wish I could have that kind of impact on my mom =( lucky girls! But i’m just trying to like you set a fine example and hope she asks!

Freezing the smoothies is an awesome idea! How long does it take to defrost? Would pulling one out the night before and placing in fridge be enough? I am hoping to freeze them in drinkable containers already, has anyone tried that?

I have a couple of things I tell myself when I go throught the breakroom at work and see the usual fare, ususally leftover from meetings or office parties. ‘Why would I eat loser food?’ ‘Whatever is on that table has NOTHING to do with me’ ‘I choose to feed my brain, not my emotions.’ And my favorite ‘That’s a nutritional cigarette – don’t smoke it.’

Today is a dangerous day for those trying to avoid bad food, especially if you work at a school. Roving gangs of leftover pie are everywhere, because it is Pi Day (3/14). The math teachers perpetuate this every year, asking their students to bring in pies. It used to get me every time – especially the cream pies (next to french fries, probably the biggest nutritional cigarette of them all – unhealthy fat, dairy, sugar, empty carbs – cream pies have it all!) Now I can’t imagine eating that stuff – its got nothing to do with me : ) .

  8. When I am tempted to eat crappy food, I always have this motto, “I will regret eating that, and I never regret NOT eating it.”

With exercise, my motto is the opposite, “I will never regret it. I will always regret it if I don’t do it.” (I struggle getting my workout done first thing in the morning sometimes… and this is what I tell myself when my alarm goes off at 6 AM. I will never regret getting up and getting it out of the way early! But I ALWAYS regret it when I turn over and go back to sleep!”

Tiffany, that is a GOOD one!

Autumn, Costco should pay me, huh! Or at least carry my books! LOL. Whatever the supply problem is with them, I hope they figure it out soon!

      Jamie, Charlie is SOOOO chute!

Karen, some probiotics will die, but some will remain. Fresh is always best but frozen is our best alternative when that isn’t possible.

I agree we need to get Robyn talking to Costco and to please keep all that spinach stocked. LOL my Reno Costco has plenty of spinach (so far) but next door the Sparks location only has tiny containers of spinach so I’ve been getting some anxiety about my spinach being discontinued in the huge bags. 🙁 Also Robyn,..I watched your Costco video awhile back and must say we were all so jealous that you are able to purchase Rice Milk in bulk. We do not drink cows milk and have been buying the Rice Milk at Walmart but wish our Costco carried this. I emailed Costco but to no avail on this subject. Maybe their buyers can get on board to see what all the GSG fans are purchasing and see the demand will be there for them for a long time to come.

Love love love, green smoothies! I find it’s always interesting how the conversation will go when talking with people about food.

Thought you’d like to know I posted about your Big Book of Green Smoothies here:

Still think it’s super fabulous Charlie’s green mustache will be famous. 🙂 heehee.

I have wondered about freezing green smoothies, but I make mine with a kefir base. Would freezing it kill the probiotics in the kefir? I am about to travel and would love to take several frozen smoothies versus dragging the heavy blender along!

Thanks Robyn! I’m pretty partial to that little munchkin too. 🙂

You know, we are having the same spinach problem at BJ’s! They don’t have nearly the stellar price that Costco does, (at BJ’s it’s $4.99 for 1.5lbs), but it’s the cheapest I can find around. Anyways, they haven’t had those large bags for about 3 weeks now (and I would know since I’m in there weekly to buy multiple big bags of spinach and kale), and I asked at the front desk and they said it was a supplier issue. So I’m not sure what the deal is with all the spinach everywhere, but it needs to come back!! Smoothies aren’t quite as good with just kale in them!

    1. Robyn Openshaw says:

You can still get 10 oz. bags of spinach elsewhere. But yes, we are all missing those 2.5 lb. bags!

Ladies, this has been all over the news for quite a while. There was a hard freeze in Mexico that decimated several crops. Some crops lost 90-100%; others only lost 50%. That included greens of all types, tomatoes, asparagus, peppers, etc.

  14. Anonymous says:

It’s all true, and Robyn is never a food nag, I love that about her. I know Liz, too, and to answer your question, Kathy, she freezes them in the plastic containers you can buy near the re-useable ziplock containers at the grocery store that are cups with screw-on lids – the big ones. She just pulls one out of her freezer on the way out the door and by lunch time it’s slushy and drinkable.

  15. I thought in your book it says to only make enough for 3 days. 1 in fridge and 1 frozen for 3rd. day? It seems like you’d lose a lot of nutrition after being frozen for a month?!!

    1. Robyn Openshaw says:

I don’t make more than for 2 days. Frozen for a month–loses some but if convenience is important to you, thawed green smoothie will still be higher in nutrition than virtually anything else you might choose to eat.
