In this article:

What Is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling is a simple habit that comes from a centuries-old Ayurvedic tradition.

This easy process kills harmful microorganisms in the mouth and teeth, alkalizes the mouth, and may even turn around oral or dental infections.

Many use it to resolve headaches, as well.

Oils have an affinity for toxins, and this habit is a great purifying practice that you can do every day — and especially while doing a detox or cleanse, like my 26-Day Detox.

Many biological dentists (including mine) recommend it for remineralizing bone in the teeth.

How To Oil Pull

I suggest keeping a tub of coconut oil and some wintergreen essential oil in your bathroom to make oil pulling as convenient as possible.

Watch me demonstrate oil pulling in the short video above, and learn more ways you can benefit from taking a few minutes with coconut oil, while making breakfast or getting dressed in the morning, for a great new health habit!

And one more thing!

Be sure you spit the oil into the garbage NOT the sink or toilet, because the oil can buildup and clog your plumbing.

P.S. Don’t spit it in the drain, because it will clog your plumbing. Spit it out in the trash.

    1. Helen Blair says:

      Correct!

    2. Elizabeth says:

      Amazing. Thanks

  2. Friederike Lehrbass says:

I read somewhere there you shouldn’t do oil pulling if you have silverfilling( mercury) in your mouth, bec it will pull out the mercury…

    1. Helen Blair says:

The mercury in your teeth are always off gassing anyways with every bite and chew so oil pulling is a very good thing to help bind it and help it exit your body!

  3. Lisa says:

Yes, I agree…spit it out in the trash.otherwise, it WILL clog your pipes over time.

    1. Helen Blair says:

Definitely. In the trash – perfect place.

  4. Priscilla says:

Can you back this claim up with any scientific evidence?

    1. K S says:

I have seen research reports on oregano EO and clove EO on mouth bacteria. Search Pubmed. Most EO are bacteria killers, just a matter of the range of bacteria each covers. When I have gum pain in the gum around my root canal, oil pulling with oregano solve my problem. It’s my real life experience, no bs.

    2. John Parson says:

The claim is oil pulling works and can detox you whole body if you do it everyday. The proof is that it has been working for over 2000 years, before they had scientific BS to prove everything that works. Before the drug companies and the so called doctors came along there were natural remedies that have worked for thousands of years. This modern medicine is the alternative snake oil practice not the time tested natural way that actually cures the problem, not just cover it up until the drugs finally kill you. sorry but I have seen to many people die at the hands of poison pill pushing doctors in the last 70 years when all was needed was to get back to eating the right foods like God intended you to eat.

      1. Shirley Jones says:

        Beautifully put. Unadulterated truth

        1. Amen to that!

At 19 yrs old stage 2 cervical, at 37 yrs PREGNANT and 2 lumps in my right breast/ no western treatment, no radiation or chemo: good thoughts, good WHOLE foods, good people and the GOOD LORD!!!

I juice 10 to 15 lbs of veggies every 3 to 4 days for over 5 years now. I happily turned 54 yrs old this past December 🙂

Live life and pause death until YOU are ready… Happy New Year!!!

          1. CindiL says:

Congrats Kimberly. Your post is an inspiration. I am currently in treatment for metastatic TNBC (immunotherapy) and wonder how detox and other methods like this react w/the treatment. I have changed my diet but am hesitant to switch totally to alternative medicine as it has also metastasized to my brain. Tumors small and shrinking so immunotherapy is working but I’d like to eventually get off of it. Your story about living for so many years after diagnosis is an inspiration.

          2. Robert says:

And that’s exactly why you are well now. Instead of letting an oncologist idiot murder you, you did the normal thing an animal would do to cure itself, go back to nature and it works when you know what your doing . I’d trust you mite than an idiot doctor who has had an hour on nutrition in school, if that. My brother in law majored in nutrition and THEN went to medical school so he’s gone to school with the fools and their fool teachers. I’m not included some chiropractors, Naturopathic ND’s, or Functional doctor MD’s.

      2. Angela says:

Couldn’t have said it better myself!! Amen

      3. Dragica says:

        My thoughts exactly.

      4. Adrian says:

I just learned to stop eating the unatural junk and to eat the food God intended!

    3. Chiquita Collins says:

Science? What happened to embracing the natural?

      1. Garth says:

Chiquita Collins, I would say there is no conflict between the science and the natural; in fact, it usually supports it. The problem is when Big Pharma or other entity, which is there for the money and power rather than our health, distorts or suppresses science in order to push their products on us or enslave us in one way or another.

    4. Robert Good says:

There’s a wonderful book called Oil Pulling you can read and also Ramiro Bagel’s book called, cure Tooth Decay ; Heal and Prevent Cavities with Nutrition. Also look up Weston Price. He was the person in the early 1900’s who did epidemiological and dental studies on ancient cultures. His book is huge and full of information. I’d like to bring him and Ansel Keyes back to life and let them have a debate. Weston Price was a hero as to eating and perhaps a precursor in thought as to the Oaleo and Keto diet. Ansel Keyes was the undulant fool who pulled the low fat diet out of his hat and singlehandedly perpetrated the fraud that has destroyed the lives of millions, if not billions of people worldwide, all the while knowing he was doing it. It’s so sad.

  5. Kristin Ward says:

You can’t beat the benefits of Coconut oil. But if you have mercury/amalgam fillings and you oil pull, you will experience unpleasant tooth pain. One of the reasons I had my fillings replaced.

    1. Lily says:

For me is help remove the toothache . I have amalgam and start to replace. I am going bio dental too. Because amalgam is mercury and toxic.

    2. Garth says:

I suppose everyone is different; but I have the old-fashioned mercury fillings (they’ve been there, same ones, for almost 50 years), and oil pulling with coconut oil definitely does not give me any pain whatsoever. The only problem I have with it is that I hate coconut. It’s disgusting. Fortunately the taste seems to be mostly gone after a couple of minutes, and I’m able to keep the oil in my mouth for as much as 40 minutes.

      1. Garth says:

In my post above, I did not tell why I started oil-pulling. After a health scare five years ago, I did a lot of research (don’t use Google! see my reply to Carolyn about that), improved by diet a lot, and got rid of the problem. One of the many added side benefits was that my mouth felt a lot cleaner, including when first getting up in the morning. As a result, I got sloppy about cleaning my teeth, and a few months before my 6/6/18 post above, I developed incredible pain. Close examination in the bathroom mirror revealed a huge, black hole near the very back of a molar. I was always having to carry the Ambesol, even applying it several times through the night just to be able to get through the night. I didn’t want any additional mercury in my mouth, nor a toxic root-canal job, so I started oil pulling with coconut oil, and brushing with Uncle Harry’s Natural Toothpaste, and before going to bed, putting calcium carbonate powder on the area, held in place for hours between the tooth/gum and my cheek. Now 16 months after that initial pain, the pain is gone, the black area has turned white again, and although scraping it gently with the dental probe used to be like scraping wet leather, now it’s like scraping the bathroom sink again, meaning the surface has turned hard again. Although material that was simply gone will not grow back (short of stem-cell therapy, I suppose), clearly I re-mineralized the remaining exposed dentin.

    3. Robert says:

Also as to coconut oil, there’s now some proof that two tablespoons of MCT’s per day visa via coconut oil can reverse Alzheimer’s . I would think especially when your on Keto and refined carbs an high glycemic index and load calories are removed. Sugar is bad in any diet except a diabetic crashing into hypoglycemia.

  6. Barbara Fuller says:

    What if you have dentures

    1. Helen Blair says:

Teeth, natural or fabricated are not an issue and removing your dentures to oil pull would be my choice – much easier to swish around and have direct contact with your gums is a plus!

      1. Barbara Fuller says:

        Thank you so much Helen

  7. Betsy Marx says:

I’m sorry, but this sounds really disgusting–I cannot stand coconut oil!

    1. Helen Blair says:

Betsy, while it is a new modality for most, you have options if you’re not keen on coconut oil. First, you can purchase refined coconut oil which is virtually flavor free OR use organic sesame oil to pull the toxins instead. Being open minded to try is a helpful place to begin, harnessing our fears, dislikes and naturally bent to what has always been whether it worked for us or not. I’m with you on trying something new!

    2. Dana says:

I agree, it feels almost too strange to tolerate. I get through it simply by reminding myself why I do it- my mouth has taken a beating so I need nutrition in and unpleasantries out.

    3. Lyndi Caruso says:

It is pretty disgusting at first, but it works! You may only be able to do a minute or 2 when starting out, I got ride of allergies doing it! Take a smaller amount and try to start with 1-5 minutes and work your way up to 20

    4. Danny says:

MTC oil has no flavor, try it instead of coconut oil.

    5. Danny says:

Can you use ginger eo for pull pulling, what benefits are there for this?

  8. Jenny says:

Wintergreen is toxic and essential oils should never be at used internally.

    1. Diane says:

I have been using peppermint essential oils since May of 2017 the kind that you can consume internally. I take 2 drops of peppermint oil under my tongue with a mouth full of water every day for heartburn… At bed time or when I get the heartburn It knocks down my heartburn in a matter of minutes. I would never use over the counter or prescription medication that causes horrible side effects to your body long term. Of course my doctor insisted that I take a script… NO need with peppermint oil. Plus, the peppermint has helped with my esophagus. EOE. I highly recommend it. Plus, peppermint oil has many other benefits… Helps with allergies too – I apply the oil with coconut oil on my neck… Works great.

    2. Dana says:

That Is ridiculous. Why are you wasting your time here with your false fear mongering? There is no rule that essential oils are not safe internally. Everyone must learn a thing or two about EO’s before using in any way. Consider this, skin is our largest organ and anything used externally will absorb to some degree into our bloodstream. Remember that the next time you run synthetic fragrance filled body wash and lotion all over, thinking external application is safe.

      1. Robert says:

That’s why I use ivory soap and natural shampoo and also no deodorant with aluminum.

    3. Audrienne Suzanie Jordan says:

      Depends on the brand.

    4. Jess Dominguez says:

That is not true at all! I suggest you do some research on essential oils. True that some oils aren’t safe to ingest but a majority of them are when properly diluted and mixed with a good source of fat. Also in this case you would not be ingesting, you shouldn’t swallow the oil after pulling since is contains all the toxins you just pulled. Wintergreen is only toxic to cats, not humans. Of course quality always matters though, so stick with organic and steam distilled and you will not have any toxicity. They are used to remove toxicity.

      1. Carolyn says:

Peppermint, if labeled safe for ingestion, is fine, but I googled wintergreen yesterday and it is apparently toxic for humans as well. You might want to look into that. I am not an authority, which is why I am googling such things.

        1. Garth says:

Carolyn, don’t use Google for heath matters. They started implementing an algorithm a couple of years ago to censor-out search results that run contrary to the profits of the corrupt pharmaceutical industry. (They also keep track of what you’ve searched for, which is none of their business.) I’m not sure Yahoo or Bing are any better. Use duckduckgo.com instead. Goodgopher.com is supposedly good for health matters, although I have not used it much because when I was trying it for a while, they had very little in non-health things like the math and engineering things I’m interested in. It might be worth another try. In any case, avoid Google, and use duckduckgo.com.

  9. Laurie says:

Before anyone does this, go to NUTRITIONFACTS.ORG. Dr. Gregor just did a whole series on oil pulling. Hope it is helpful!!!

    1. Lily says:

Vwhat do you mean ? It’s good or not. For me it’s good benefit doing pulling oil.

    2. Peter says:

Oh yeah, the same Dr Greger who says that we should all be drinking organic canola oil and olive oil and then changed his mind a few years later! LOL. Yeah right.

      1. Robert says:

You shouldn’t be drinking any oil anyway. Olive oil is okay occasionally but canola oil Aka rapeseed oil is a solvent that became a star for polyunsaturated oils , all of which can cause heart disease, cancer, auto immune disease etc. all the “seed oils” the above mentioned and soybean oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil are not good for you at all and could kill you . Look up Ivor Cummins work on this and CAC cardio scan on YouTube. It’s amazing and documented for you doubting Thomases out there. The twentieth century caused most of these problems and the industrialists who infiltrated all of the medical schools. It’s very sad.

  10. Tracey Behling says:

After you do the oil pulling in the morning do you still brush your teeth afterwards??

  11. Carol Hadjiandreou says:

Can you oil pull if you have root canals?

  12. Susan says:

Is the oil pulling with coconut oil just as effective without the added peppermint oil?

  13. Laurie says:

IMPORTANT!! Oil pulling can unbalance the oral microbiome and should be done ONLY for short periods, not ongoingly … Here are two quotes on the topic from dentist Gerry Curatola:

"For a short period alone, oil pulling can help someone whose mouth is unhealthy, as the ‘detergent action’ of swishing olive or coconut oil between the teeth has a ‘lilophilic effect,’ stripping away unhealthy plaque (hypertrophic biofilm) from teeth. Continued use can actually result in an equally unhealthy atrophic or stripped biofilm. While a hypertrophic environment is often associated as being conducive to tooth decay and gum disease, atrophic environments often result in tooth sensitivity and sore gums. The key is BALANCE or what we call ‘microbial homeostasis.’ When in balance, the microbes in our mouths literally keep us alive."

"If you keep doing oil pulling, you go from a hypertrophic biofilm, the thick, sticky, smelly stuff all over your teeth, to a desert. Really, you want be in the middle of the target. You don’t want scary, thick, smelly jungle. Nor do you want a desert. You want to be right in the middle, with that beautiful, robust garden."

Dr. Curatola discusses this in a Mercola interview, here:

    https://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2014/11/30/importance-oral-microbiome.aspx

    1. Dan says:

I had my teeth extracted several years ago, could I still benefit from oil pulling? Can you use other types of eo’s for pulling, and what are your suggestions? Maybe ginger eo’s?

  14. Joe Perrone says:

This is a great detoxing procedure that can keep your mouth healthy but there is one thing that I would like to add. As a long time Health Coach, after I spit out the oil (preferably on the ground) I rinse my mouth out with a cap full of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide and a cap full of purified water which I swish around my mouth for a short time (about 20 to 30 seconds). Then spit this out in the sink. This will give you a more thorough clean than just rinsing out your mouth. I still brush my teeth as well using a natural toothpaste.

  15. Marilyn says:

I did Coconut Oil Pulling for just a few weeks back in 2014ish when it first became the new health rage.
It started pulling the Mercury out of the imalgum in my fillings. It cost me $5,000.00 in dental work and I still have a few teeth I want to have changed out thru the Biological Dentist. The Mercury could be seen in the blood stream from the doc on his “live blood” microscope. This should be done with a warning! And I had a breast lump turn Cancerous. In 2015, hummm?
