Milk Substitutes?

Robyn Openshaw - Jul 07, 2009 - This Post May Contain Affiliate Links

Hi! my name is Dina, I’m 27 y/o from Tel Aviv, Israel.

I’m new to Robyn’s website and find it a treasure of information.

I guess one could define me as “flexitarian”. My aim is to eventually consist 70% of my diet on raw foods.

The question is: Breakfast! Besides the wonderful smoothies – green, pink or otherwise… What can be substituted for milk?

It would be a simple question had I not discovered I can’t “do” soy milk or tofu. I’ve also tried almond and rice milks (all of them of the boxed varieties), with the same higly  unpleasant results.

So, milk substitutes. I’ve discovered that for cooking, cashew cream works amazingly well instead of dairy (*especially when I want to make meat dishes for guests who keep kosher – they swear it’s the real deal). But what about a cup of hot chocolate or cold milk on cereal? what can be done for that?

I’ll be very glad for your ideas, anyone who  can help. Thanks!

You are all so inspiring to me. I am sick all the time and trying to get well. I have never had a problem with my health in 58 years. Now I have adverse reactions to everything including the medicine my doctor has prescribed. This is all very overwhelming, but I am trying. These messages help me so much. I have to learn where to purchase the foods at a good price, learn what blenders, dehydratetors, crunchers, crushers, to buy. Keep up the good work.

I don’t eat cereals and granola that often, but when I do I just add pure water! It works great! Add fruit . . . the seeds and nuts are already in the mix . . . saves a lot of time making nut milks and I don’t need the extra calories!

  4. if you blend cashews and water it doesn’t need straining (and i don’t presoak either) – and I don’t add any sweetener – lovely. maybe if you make your own like this you won’t have the aggravation you have had in the past

I will second Sharon Larson, sesame milk cup for cup has three times the calcium as cows milk, you just have to add something to sweeten it up a bit.

oh! I came up with a solution:

having my green smoothie in a bowl with the granola.

I got the inspiration from a brazilian breakfast named acai.

They make a shake out of acai berries with fruit juice, sometimes even with guarana in it (guarana is a fruit which contains high doses of a caffeine-like stimulant), top it up with plenty of sliced banana and a hearty dose of granola on top. It’s definitely enough to keep you going for half a day.

So if I make a green smoothie I make sure it’s really fruity along with the greens (I like to add bee pollen for amino acid boost – but it tastes a little weird) and flax oil. Then 3-4 tablespoons of granola… and I’m sorted until lunch.

Do you need to soak the cashews over night like the almonds?

    Hi,

    You are the greatest!

Somehow I did not get your first green smoothie recipe. I am doing green smoothies. I use one half a small banana, some apple juice(maybe one half to three quarters of an inch in the food processor, a whole avocado (chopped up), two raw eggs, about four leaves of kale all torn up and a scoop of “NOW” pea powder. I also add four Nikken green barley capsules (empty the capsules in the food processor).

I am dairy-free and gluten-free so I do not use milk. I am also soy free. I bought a box of hemp milk but it is still in the cupboard. It is such a test to find what I can combine and like, and be ok with. I have been wanting to have these milk substitutes reviewed and compared. Can I make tapioca pudding with hemp milk?

    Hello All.

You all are so inspiring to me. I have have been extremely sick for 1 1/2 years now with severe virtigo, migraines and excruciating head pain. I went through 10 different doctors, numerous tests, medications, treatments and even acupunture to no avail. I just recently I found out the cause of the problem and all that I have been through is due to the fact that I am VERY allergic to SOY (shocker I know) Unfortunately, the soy has poisioned my system so badly I can barely stand or walk, I’m in severe pain everyday, I have zero energy and I have to see a Kenesiologist 3 times per week for treatments for all the damage it has caused to my body and my immune system. I recently found Robyn and green smoothies and so far I love everything I’m learning. I’m wondering if all of you advanced smoothie drinkers can give me some ideas on the absolute best things I can put into my smoothies to rid my body of this poison and rebuild my immune system and heal my body the quickest. My Dr said it is going to take time to get it all out my system and repair all the damage it’s done to me but I need some suggestions on feeding my body the right stuff to heal it. Any suggestions you can make is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much and God bless…
