Tried-and-True Alternatives to Antibiotics

Robyn Openshaw - Jun 05, 2011 - This Post May Contain Affiliate Links

Print this blog entry and keep it handy! Part of being empowered to leave behind reliance on drugs and surgeries, is having an arsenal of alternative solutions that do no harm.

Key among them–if I may run this into the ground already!–is making your body a strong organism against threats. You do that with raw, alkaline plant foods, and only rare use (if you must) of white flour, sugar, dairy, and meat.

But here are 10 tried-and-true suggestions made here by my BRILLIANT, AMAZING READERS, and I’m sure readers will post even more effective ways to kill infections, both viral and bacterial, without blasting your army of healthy microorganisms, causing thrush, yeast infections, allergies, and high probability of getting sick again soon. Please add what’s worked for you, to help others.

Virtually all of the items in this list can be purchased at most health food stores. Have them on hand!

  1. Strep throat: 6 drops of Lugol’s iodine solution, in 1 Tbsp. vegetable glycerin, coat the throat in it, 3x a day.
  2. Strep throat: goldenseal tincture, several times a day, and colloidal silver. [Robyn’s]
  3. Ear infection: ear candles. (Doesn’t eliminate infection, but gets blocked fluids moving and draining.)
  4. Ear infection: pour hydrogen peroxide in the affected ear. Let foam and bubble for a few minutes. Drain, repeat as necessary. Follow up up with garlic oil, tincture of lobelia, or onion juice (from a fresh onion). Seal the ear with a cotton ball for a day. [from Robyn: I did this with fresh onion juice, too, with good results]
  5. For anything: take a teaspoon of Dr. Christopher’s Super Garlic Immune Formula (Anti-Plague) several times a day at the first sign of a cold or illness. [Robyn’s fave: AMAZING results. Everytime you’re willing to live with garlic breath! ALWAYS have this around for the winter.]
  6. For anything: colloidal silver [Robyn: I am always amazed at how effective CS is]
  7. For anything: garlic
  8. For anything: grapefruit seed extract [Robyn: my mom swears by this one]
  9. For anything: Thyme, Oregano, Lemon, Tea Tree Essential Oils
  10. For bronchial infection: NAC, Flucomune (ayurvedic formula available at health food store)

My 9 yr old just had an ear infection (outer) after we had the flu…. and we saw a NP for it…. she told us to use vinegar to dry up the fluid. And it worked.

I also used for coughing etc, a salve made of garlic, coconut oil and olive oil and it works wonders, you smell garliky but works great.

There is a book called Be Your Own Dr ( you can order it at http://www.natureswarehouse.net/) that has all kinds of things in it…. and they are all tried and true. Very handy to have around.

Robyn, can you do a post on how you use colloidal silver please?? I’ve tried to find info on the web and it’s all so confusing! And a quacko Alternative Health ‘doctor’ (who I’m not seeing anymore, unrelated) spooked me by telling me it could be dangerous (to the kidneys, I think) if not used properly, even though I was of the impression that it’s totally safe. Any help on this from anybody?!

Love the ideas though, I’m going to print this page for sure!

Anj, I make it myself with a colloidal silver maker, and I take a Tbsp several times a day for any viral / bacterial anything, orally, plus if it involves ear/mouth/nose/throat, my mom says it should be used for irrigating as well. (I’ve never HAD any illness like that in many years, so I don’t know, but she swears by it.) If you drink a cup a day for many years, you can end up turning blue-ish. So don’t drink a cup a day for many years. That’s likely what that “doctor” is talking about.

  3. We love Master Tonic. Master Tonic looks like it cures about anything that ails you, and is easy to make and have on hand.

    Master Tonic Ingredients

1 part fresh chopped garlic cloves (antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitical)

1 part fresh chopped white onions, or the hottest onions available (similar properties to garlic)

1 part fresh grated ginger root (increases circulation to the extremities)

1 part fresh grated horseradish root (increases blood flow to the head)

1 part fresh chopped Cayenne peppers, Jalapenos, Serranos, Habeneros, African bird peppers….any combination of the hottest peppers available

That and some homemade kefir will cure anything, I bet. 🙂

I had used hydrogen peroxide in the ear with success over the years. However, the last time I did it, I started to have severe pain and I was forced to go to an ear specialist and he said you should never put that in your ear. He said that it can seriously injure your ear drum if the ‘reaction’ goes wrong. Which, I guess, is why I had good experiences and then a bad one. It is also important to keep the balance of moisture in the ear, even when you have excess fluid, and HP is very drying.

While I always look for alternative methods and used it before, after that experience that is one method I will not use again. But, of course, that is not to turn anyone away from doing that, just wanted to share.

Turmeric, garlic, and ginger are anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial. If you suffer from any auto-immune disease, including these in your diet everyday really helps a lot. In the summer, I practically live on curries cause these common curry seasonings (among others) really alleviates that immune response. I tried to make a turmeric tincture, but that’s just too bitter tasting, so I use it in food instead or take it in capsule form.

Turmeric is a really potent anti-inflammatory and a Cox-2 inhibitor, and consumed everyday, it works just as well as OTC drugs and some RX arthritis drugs. Turmeric is available in capsule form, and during the worst of Spring allergy season, I take 500 mg 3-4 times a day, as well as using it in my cooking as much as possible.

Turmeric pastes can be made to be applied to psoriasis scales, common rashes, and bug bites. To make a paste, I first bloom a couple tablespoons in enough boiling water to make a paste, then add a few drops of tea tree oil, and a clove of garlic that has smashed to a paste. Turmeric powder does stain everything that comes in contact with it to a bright yellow, so be careful how you use it. It’s a good idea to have a container of this in your fridge ready to use for mosquito season!

2 natural treatments for acne: coconut milk and naturally fermented apple cider vinegar. Mom used to make a coconut milk facial wash that worked wonders for clearing skin (don’t remember how she made it). Apple cider vinegar not only works as an astringent, but it also helps to pH balance the skin to prevent bacteria in the pores from spreading and causing more breakouts.

I have some grapefruit seed extract but not sure how to use it. Do you dilute and drink it, use it straight up, not quite sure.

Robyn, I agree that plant foods are the best. I recently went 3 months with a 100% raw plant food diet, based on green smoothies. In the beginning, I felt an increase of energy and experienced rapid weight loss. The latter part, I found my energy reduced & the weight loss slowed to a crawl. Went to an evening baseball game, sat in the chill for 3 hours and caught a chill-cold-infection; green slime, congestion etc. My body was weakened and ready to receive the infection. The accupuncturist explained concepts of cold/neutral/warm foods and how I needed a balance between cold (mostly raw) and warm foods (often cooked) Some spices can make a raw food warm etc. Can you speak directly to the chinese concept of cool/warm foods & health concerns? Has anyone else out there had this experience?

This is more about vaccines than antibiotics (which I don’t take because my health was very messed up by them in the past.)

Anyway, for those in the health field, did you choose to get the hep b vaccine or did you sign a waiver and refuse it? Please explain why or why not? Thanks!

For those with Lyme disease…. here is what Be Your Dr says they do for her daughter who has Lyme disease. She makes papaya leaf tea. Two qt daily and she added high doses of Vit C (6-12 grams daily), 9- Olive leaf capsules, lots of Super Duper Tonic (recipe to follow) and hot echinacea tonic. She says little by little the disease left her… she finished up by doing a few weeks of Teasel Root tincture. She says that through the years she has discovered that this really helps some people but not others.

    Super Duper Tonic

    Chop finely equal amounts:

raw onions, garlic, horseradish, ginger root, cayenne (use less if you do not want it so hot)

Fill a quart jar to the brim. Fill the jar up to the neck with RAW apple cider vinegar. Let it set 2-4 weeks, shaking everyday. ( you can use it as soon as it is made but it gets stronger the longer it is let set). Now strain it through a dark cloth and bottle in dark bottles. Take 1 spoonful in water or jc this is hot Take it hourly or 4 times a day. The more often it is taken the quicker you will notice a difference.**This is also good for a cold or the flu and lots of other things…. I suggest buying the book it is full of valuable info.

“Our second daughter battled Lyme disease and often ran a low grade fever and felt ill. SHe learned that if she would do a ginger bath when this happened, she would feel much better in the morning.Because of this I always keep a pound of ginger on hand.

    Ginger Bath

Fill the tub with very warm water. Add 2-4 tbsp of ginger powder to a full tub of water. Before you get in drink two cups of hot peppermint or ginger tea. Have a cup of cold water close by in case you get to hot or feel faint. If you do drink some cold water and put some on the back of your neck for a bit. Soak in the hot tub for at least 10-20 mins. When you feel your heart start to race and you get flushed get out quickly and get into a really warm bed. Drink another cup of hot tea, curl up sweat it out and go to sleep. Do not do this if you have heart problems or high blood pressure. Be careful with children and do not do it for babies as they can’t tell you how they feel.

    Hope that helps you !

  13. Robyn I’m so glad you keep running the healthy eating as being key into the ground. It is so essential. This post… http://www.simplehealthytasty.com/2011/02/herbs-our-family-uses.html on my blog lists the things we use not only for infections but other ailments too. I have found that by doing out best to keep our bodies strong we rarely need them but it’s nice to know about and have them for those times when we find ourselves fighting something.

    Hi Robyn,

What do you recommend for canker sores besides a plant based diet, increased vitamin c. I have tried vitamin c, colloidal silver and salt water rinses. Do you recommend anything for these? Thanks

    1. Kara says:

If you haven’t already, try switching to a non-SLS toothpaste. There is evidence that regular toothpastes exacerbates canker sores.

      1. Helen Katy Support says:

Thank you, Kara for adding your tip to the list!
