macular degeneration

        My friend Randy, a restaurant manager nearing 50, just told me he had to leave the Utah Jazz game last night in the third quarter, because his eyes hurt so much he couldn’t really see.   He’s frustrated by the degeneration of his eyes.

        If you’re reading this, you likely enjoy reading.   It’s one of the greatest pleasures of my life–my voracious appetite for reading—because it’s how I learn.  I would be so devastated to lose my vision, which is what is happening to one of my close family members right now, in her 60s and unable to read because of macular degeneration.

        It doesn’t have to be that way.   If you’ve followed this blog from the beginning, you might have read that with no surgical or other intervention, my eyes at age 41 are now 20/15, my vision  perfect—despite the fact that I wore glasses at the age of 20!   Don’t let anyone tell you that degenerative disease cannot be reversed.

        A study published in 1994 by Journal of the American Medical Assn. (JAMA) said that people who eat greens five times a week have an 86 percent lower risk of macular degeneration!
     
        Drink green smoothies for your eyes.   If it’s able to make vision improve, just imagine what it’s doing for the rest of your body, too.

  1. The last time I had an eye exam my eye doctor was amazed that my vision has improved…..the first improvement in 15 years. I’ve been wearing glasses full time since the age of 16 and every year I’ve had to get a new prescription because my eyes have gotten worse. I was wondering how my eyes would get better if I’m wearing glasses all day every day – wouldn’t they have a hard time correcting themselves with the glasses on? Should I be heading to the eye doctor more often?

    Greens are wonderful!!!

  2. just curious robyn – was it JUST from green smoothies that you noticed the change in your eye sight or was it from the whole diet/lifestyle that you lead? I am very nearsighted and I’ve been leaning towards wanting to do lasik -as contacts and glasses are both not fun. I have looked into eye exercise programs and I would be willing to do that, but it’s just not practical for me at this stage in my life- but the diet/lifestyle I could do that.

    Well, who knows, but I’ve been doing green smoothies for about 13 years, and that’s when the improvement in my eyesight began. That’s about the time I got very serious about eating well in general, too, but SO many studies link good eye health to green foods that I’m guessing that’s the difference. 🙂
