Expo West 2012: Here’s What I Think of 99% of “Health Food”, Part 5 of 5
Today I riff, on video, on what I think of the vast majority of the foods and marketing that comprise “natural foods.” I can’t even count how many times at Expo West a sales person said to me, “It’s all natural!”
“All natural” is completely meaningless. Under U.S. government standards, you could be eating a food-dyed, completely processed-food cupcake, and it could qualify as “all natural.” If ALL you ate was “all natural” food, under that banner, you could still be 100 lbs. overweight with cancer, heart disease, and half a dozen autoimmune conditions.
Here’s my video trawling countless booths containing the good, the bad, the ugly:

Robyn, You make me laugh! It’s so easy to get mad and overwhelmed with the absurdity of some comanies pushing their “natural” products. The Jelly Bean stand was particularly comical. Thanks for the reminder to keep our wits about us when shopping for REAL health foods and to keep a sense of humor about it.
OH man that last roll eyes required a legit laugh out loud moment here at my computer!
Can I take a moment to tell you something I know you’ll appreciate. I don’t give my 15 month old cow’s products. He has goats milk but really we don’t do well in our family with dairy (and now because of you I know why!). So at the doctors office doing his check up and she was dumbfounded that I was not giving him dairy products (said he would not be getting the sufficient needs for his diet) and then proceeded to tell me that he may just be a bit lactose intolerant and to get him lactose drops and start him on dairy ASAP! Um what??? So you want me to give him medication to be able to eat a food? Or how about maybe if a food bothers you…don’t eat it or give it to your baby???? Especially since his whole family doesn’t do well with it! It makes me sort of fuming mad because you know…she’s not in the best shape and so I find it hard to take nutritional advice from her. OH and I told her I was putting coconut oil on my older sons face for the eczema that he had developed (we’re still getting him off of dairy) and she told me to stop doing that because the coconut oil is scented and is probably making him worse. I assured her it wasn’t ‘coconut butter lotion’ that it was a food product and she said it was still “scented” – as if a scent was added?! Then she suggested giving him a bleach bath! Don’t give him coconut oil but soak his body in bleach! And THEN she gives him a sugared lollipop after his visit! Anyway…had to vent about that for a minute. I get worked up! We need you to come to Canada! I’ve got everyone on a green smoothie around here! (including my 15 month old….but Dr probably will disagree with that LOL)
LMAO! You crack me up with your faces…especially the jelly bean stand and the very last stand of the sweets. Thanks for keeping folks accountable 🙂 I am sure there will be a day when they see you coming and say “no cameras allowed”.
The jelly bean stand was great – you looked dumbfounded and speechless!! Just staring on green smoothies but can only use so many types of greens because my blender is a regular lower cost type.
Krist @visible voice, I totally feel for ya! I have had some similar experiences at the doctors! I come out fuming, and then later I can laugh about it. But still, it is ridiculous what doctors will say sometimes…or most times ….
Next on your list should be the frauds who market dried wheat grass CLIPPINGS at a price point similar to dried barley grass JUICE.
The last bit there is hilarious! You’re my hero, Robyn!
Thanks for the laugh Robin. Honestly! haha! I also enjoyed seeing you in Orlando. You are a great speaker with a wonderful sense of humor.
Nancy
I completely agree about the “all natural” reasoning. I went to a Vegan/VegFest this weekend and almost all of the samples were filled with sugar, fat and salt. Granted, they were full of “healthier” sources of sugar, fat and salt, and not too many with preservatives. However, my stomache, as well as my daughter’s, felt sick afterwards. After eating primarily raw for many months now, I could not stomache all of these “healthy” foods I was sampling. The table that ran out of free samples first?? The table giving away farm fresh apples – go figure!! Thanks for sharing all that you learn!
What they said, above… LOL!
the best comment came from your eyes expression
