Become a modern-day hunter-gatherer! Dr. Wahls beats M.S. with nutrition!
I love this TedTalk by Dr. Terry Wahls, M.D., great data and slides about how she reversed multiple sclerosis. She talks about how she was wheelchair-bound with MS and on many drugs, and is now a healthy mom and doctor. She became a “modern-day hunter-gatherer,” because indiginous people’s diets exceed our RDAs by 200% to 1000%. Check out the chart in her slide show showing the percentage of Americans deficient in each nutrient. The top two answers were OMEGA 3 (85%) and IODINE (80%!). We’re also highly deficient in calcium, magnesium, and B vitamins. Dr. Wahls undertook to address her nutritional deficiencies, which over the course of just a few months got her out of the reclining wheelchair and onto a bike, eventually completely regaining her life.
Daily, she eats 3 cups green leaves (dinner plate), 3 cups sulfur-rich colorful vegs (broccoli, cauliflower, onion, garlic, mushrooms, asparagus, many more), 3 cups colorful high-antioxidant fruits and vegs—yes, 9 cups! Also wild fish and organ meats and grass fed meat, seaweed foods. Now she has dedicated her life to teaching others about the benefits of the hunter-gatherer diet and doing clinical trials to document its effects.
That doesn’t sound yummy to you? Destroying my myelin sheaths and losing the ability to walk, and feed myself, doesn’t sound yummy to me. More and more of us have these kinds of dire futures if we don’t stop eating what you see in the photo with the family of four: a week’s worth of their food, which is almost entirely processed.
Tomorrow we will talk about Dr. Brian Clement’s teaching about whether fish oil is really a good source of Omega 3. (Hint: as I’ve said in my books and speaking, fish is highly problematic both as a food and as a supplement. We’ll talk about WHY, but fish in clean water is difficult if not impossible to find.)

Over the past 4 years in all the various reading I have done the mention of the ever famous mitochondria strikes once again in this video clip! Thank you for sharing 🙂

I am sorry that this is off the topic of your post, but I wanted to know if you know about food allergies. I haven’t eaten dairy or grains (or sugar) for 41 days. Then I had to travel and eat at other people’s houses, and had dairy and wheat for several days. I had been hoping to add one back in at a time to see if I had any reactions. I have an upset stomach and acne on my chin, and my husband said I breathed heavy, not snoring, but not nice sounding. I was wondering if you knew if these symptoms pointed to specifically a wheat or a dairy allergy? I also struggle with fatigue.
Along these lines, how do you deal with food while traveling? I can only do so much while at other people’s houses, but how do you eat and what do you bring with you to eat well?
Thank you for being such a great source of healthy information!
America needs more & more people like Dr. Wahls to teach the benefits of a healthy diet. Today I returned home from a weekend with my parents, and it was the boost that I needed to get my nutrition back on track
My Dad was admitted to the hospital on Thursday, and tomorrow is undergoing a left and right heart catheterization to diagnose why he tires so easily and why his blood oxygen levels are so low. The doctor talked of my Dad’s history of plaque build-up on his arteries and said it’s likely Dad will need to cart around an oxygen tank with him from here on out. Not more than 5 minutes later, a hospital employee brings in a dinner of meat & gravy over white rice, pale and processed green beans, a bowl of chemically laden sherbert for dessert and a cup of sugar-laden fruit juice. I was speechless.
I am overwhelmed and sickened by the fact that NUTRITION and PREVENTION aren’t a remote consideration in my Dad’s care. The average, tired path continues to be find the symptom and pump more meds into the body in an effort to manage the symptom.
It’s time for a change. It’s time to educate ourselves and to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for our health. If you CHOOSE to eat the processed crap, then don’t be surprised when you get sick because of it.
Dr. Wahls did the research. She educated herself and took RESPONSIBILITY for her health. Our health is in our own hands. There are good, kind, well-meaning doctors out there, but unfortunately I am learning that preventative nutrition isn’t in the medical school syllabus. It’s up to us to take charge of our health and to educate ourselves. The awakening that the medical industry needs so desperately is solely up to us.
