- 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
- 1 banana
- 1 1/2 cups spinach
- ice, to taste
-
Place all ingredients into a high powered blender. Blend until smooth.
-
Add a handful or two of ice if you want your smoothie extra thick and cold. Blend again until smooth to enjoy.
You could also add our chocolate protein powders to this smoothie to make it more filling. Either the Bone Broth Protein in Chocolate Shake or the Vegan Superfood Complete Meal Protein.
You may have seen those headlines saying “Science says chocolate is good for you!” with a big picture of a sectioned chocolate bar, tantalizingly revealed from its crinkly wrapper. That’s confusing when there’s conflicting news about sugar — and sometimes dairy — being, well, not good for you.
Cacao (what chocolate is made out of) is actually the large seed of the Theobroma plant. It gets picked, dried, and then fermented before getting ground up into a powder. You can buy that powder itself in raw form, which is what this Chocolaty Breakfast Smoothie recipe uses for our yummy chocolate fix. And when it’s raw — before all those extra, not-so-healthy ingredients are added — it actually has quite a few health benefits!
Raw Cacao has often been called a Superfood for your Brain and Heart.
It has more calcium than cow’s milk, and high in nutrients like iron, zinc, and magnesium. Cacao also contains four vital neurotransmitters that contribute to our happiness and well-being: serotonin, dopamine, anandamide, and phenylethylamine. So eating it in raw form, like in this delicious smoothie, can literally help your depression.
(I wasn’t kidding when I called it a pick-me-up.)
