Junk Food Dude’s Yummy Healthy Recipes

By Robyn Openshaw, MSW | Oct 15, 2010

I’ve been cooking up so many ideas for how 2012 is the year I start taking the GSG message to KIDS, rather than just their parents. I have BIG plans for a whole revolution that starts with a big event in your elementary school gym: reading The Adventures of Junk Food Dude and arming families with Junk Food Dude’s Yummy Healthy Recipes. Then they rotate around “centers” with food tastings, hosted by your local health food store. And you make money to put the event on, and I tell you exactly how to do it. And you have a blast, and tons of kids leave empowered and educated and excited to eat whole foods.

They leave having chosen whether to be Junk Food Dude or Green Smoothie Guy. They’re rewarded with a sticker that says, “I’m a Green Smoothie Guy!” or “I’m a Green Smoothie Girl!” if they made and tasted yummy whole foods.

You in? More later, on that, so stay tuned.

Junk Food Dude’s Yummy Healthy Recipes is an all-color, easy recipe book for 4 to 14-year olds. This is where education ideally should to start, and it helps if kids are EXCITED about not only the consequences of good nutrition—but the tastes, textures, and processes involved, too. I learned when I studied to be a child and family therapist that PROCESS is as important as PRODUCT.

Check out a few of the photos that will be in the book. (Katie Dudley, I’M NOT WORTHY—you are, straight up, a genius with a camera. Check out http://www.kdphotography.org)

  1. This sounds like an incredibly fun and creative way to introduce kids to healthy eating. I’m in!

And, the sneak peak at the photography is incredible. Food as art!

Wow! Those recipes look yummy. I’ve been reading to my girls(4 & 8 yrs) the sneak peaks of your book and they like it! We have been drinking green smoothies for a while now and they love it,even my 21 month old boy! He knows the routine every morning and stands right at my feet anxiously waiting for me to pour some in his sippy cup =)

I am so excited for the kickoff of Green smoothies with kids! I am a mother of 3 and an elementary teacher. I also run our environmental club called “Earth Kids” Our first meeting is coming up and we are starting the year right with an introduction and tasting of green smoothies. I can’t wait. My children already drink them each morning and on Friday my son even took one to his teacher. Thanks so much for bringing this to kids!!!

I am all the way in for the elementary school program and would like to be a presenter in San Diego when you are ready to launch here.

My daughter just started to give green smoothie to her 6 month old daughter with her rice, oatmeal or barley cereal. She likes it.

This looks so great! Speaking of things sinking in (Anissa’s comment) the other day we were late and I just pulled into a Sonic to get dinner…which is NOT the norm. My 4 and 3 year old screamed like I was forcing them to jump off a cliff and said they were going to get sick and that it wasn’t good for our bodies! I was so happy 🙂

  8. I love the recipes you are featuring for kids!!!!

  9. I have a fun green smoothie story to share. My 9 year old son told me today that he had a crush on a girl at our homeschool co-op. I asked him what he liked about her and he said, “she’s smart, nice, kind of pretty, and she drinks green smoothies–we talked about it.” Love it! I guess I’ll allow the crush to continue since she’s a green smoothie drinker!

This sounds great. I am supposed to teach nutrition to a group of girl scouts next week. The mom that asked me said “bring on the green smoothies”. Thank you so much for all you do. You really are making a big difference in the lives of many, and smaller difference in the lives of countless.

I love the website, I always read and re-read articles to keep me motivated. Me and my 2 and half yrs old DD were drinking green smoothies our breakfast for nearly a year now we love them. I am also weaning my 7 months old baby boy on them. Thank you Robyn for focusing on educating children so much, they are our future. Great idea. lets teach our children good eating habits. Well done everyone. Lots love
