Interesting Fact About Coconut Oil

I have reports on the site about why I like coconut oil (for cooking, for your beauty regimen), and at the bottom of each report is a link to the best price on really high quality coconut oil.

A reader purchased coconut oil through the link and had a strange reaction with the oil going bad in about a year. We have never heard this complaint before, and my own oil is good after a few years, so I was curious about the followup this reader got from the company I link to. Here’s what she said, with her advice to you based on her experience:

To keep you posted, I did call Mountain Rose, and they were extremely courteous and attentive to my concerns. They conducted a lab test on the batch that I bought from, and emailed me the following:

‘Thank you for contacting Mountain Rose Herbs regarding your unrefined Coconut oil. Our QC lab manager has investigated your feedback on this oil and responded:

‘I examined our archived lab sample of this lot. It is stable and there is no indication of the oil becoming rancid. This customer may want to inspect the glass jars she uses and make sure they are completely dry before adding any oil. Water (hydrolysis) can cause decomposition of the oil, which can eventually lead to the oil becoming rancid. 11/9/09

‘Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. Thank you for your business and for supporting organic agriculture!’

So now, thinking back, some water droplets (few) might have been left in the jar after washing it and adding the coconut oil, due to my excitement to use the stuff. This would make sense because the larger container that I was drawing from seems fine still. I’d like to warn fellow bloggers to completely dry their jars before adding oil. Apparently the growth continues and eventually takes over the jar with bacteria. (Nasty stuff–smells like rotten fish! yuck!)

    Hi Robyn, I am curious about your son’s nutrition and exercise regimen. Could you provide details for a typical day? I have a son interested in adding some muscle as well. We have your 12 Steps, great stuff! Thanks

      He eats the basic diet you read about in my books / blog / site, and adds a protein shake at night (not every night, just when we get to it!). As for exercise, I don’t really know what-all he does, besides baseball practice every day, starting in Jan., and he seems to be often lifting weights in his bedroom!

    Good to know! I haven’t transferred any of the oil to glass jars but I’m almost out of the bucket I bought last year. Turns out with raw food eating you use even less coconut oil because you don’t need it in “cooking”. Hurray!

    Coconut oil should last for several years without a problem – its almost entirely saturated fat, which makes it very stable. And one of the healthiest oils on earth – boosts metabolism, improves athletic performance (as Robyn’s son is clearly finding), improves intestinal balance. Good stuff.

    Why is this better than olive oil? Gram for gram it has more calories and saturated fats than olive oil?

    Here is a quote from our local paper “The Oregonian” dated Wednesday June 30 2010. They are quoting Dr Mehmet OZ and Dr Mike Roizen authors of “You on a diet”.

    Coconut oil “it has more saturated fat than butter, burgers, even lard, which means it can lead to everything from heart attack – if you live long enough – dementia”. “It is loaded with saturated fat, the kind that clogs up your arteries and heart with lousy LDL cholesterol and puts you on the waiting list for the cardiac care unit”.

    Robyn Dr Mehmet Oz seems pretty well informed when I here him speak on nutrition. I’m really confused about coconut oil now.

      Hi James, I don’t think you should eat a LOT of any fat–keep it to 10% of your diet (which tends to happen naturally without measuring, if you’re eating a plant based diet). However, I recommend The Coconut Oil Miracle for an overview of the research available, which is pretty substantial. Keep in mind that the Pacific Islanders who eat a traditional, indigenous (non-Westernized) diet get up to 60% coconut fat in their diet and have ideal height/weight ratios and virtually no heart disease or cancer. “Saturated fat” has become a hiss and a byword in nutrition, but Dr. Fife (in the book) addresses why in the case of unrefined coconut and palm oil, it’s not a bad thing.

    I know you recommend the coconut oil from Mountain Rose. But I was wondering what you thought about tropical tradition coconut oil. It seems to be a good deal and on there website it looks like its a good product with all the information they give. I know you have done research on coconut oil to find the best stuff. Is this stuff good enough for me to buy? Thanks
