I love Idaho Falls, Real Men Eat Plants….part 2 of 3

By Robyn Openshaw, MSW | Jun 15, 2011

I’m not sure what part of the male psyche allows them to believe that they’re totally good to eat a burger and six-pack of donuts all because they had a green smoothie earlier in the day. I had a meeting with Hawk Harper at Runner’s Corner Monday about organizing a GreenSmoothieGirl Humanitarian 5K (“Running In the Raw!”) to further my dream of building a badly needed orphanage for refugees in Ecuador. And he told me he loves “the little white donuts.” He figures he’s good to go, because he always drinks his greens. We had a laugh about that—I’ve heard so many men say similar things (and so have a lot of wives who read this blog).

I don’t mean to generalize. Not all men think that. (Maybe men just say it out loud, where women tell themselves that privately? Is it just bravado / machismo?)

This guy, Sam, has a spectacular story. Listen to him tell about having the contents of his chest removed from his body, and how he got off his meds and became a spectacularly healthy runner, eating plant foods and green smoothies.

He’s a man’s man. A cop and martial artist. I would rather not be caught alone in a dark alley with him if he were mad. AND HE EATS SALAD AND CALLS IT DINNER.

Go Sam! Thanks for coming outta the closet with your green drinks.

  1. Inspirational Video! Thanks!
My wife and I went vegetarians a year ago. We both lost weight. My wife went off her Blood pressure pills and the doctor took me off my cholesterol pills.
The only thing my doctor said was to eat fresh fruit instead of Juice or smoothies. The reason being that Liquid Juice spike your sugar levels and promote Diabetes. Just thought, if you have to drink your smoothie, then sip it slowly.

Steve, fresh fruit better than juice, YES. Better than smoothies, NO, because the green smoothies I teach are just fresh fruit PLUS GREENS.

    Hi Robyn,
Cool story on the green smoothie drinking cop guy!

I have a question regarding alkaline water and am wondering what your thoughts are. We have heard about the Kangen Miracle but it is so very expensive. My son has big skin problems and his natureopathic Dr. recommended Kangen. I think I saw an article on your site about a different company who does a similar thing.
    Thank you,
    Libby Torrance

  11. I just received this movie announcement in my inbox. Thought I would pass it along for those interested.

Forks Over Knives examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods. The major storyline traces the personal journeys of Dr. T. Colin Campbell, a nutritional scientist from Cornell University, and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, a former top surgeon at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic. Inspired by remarkable discoveries in their young careers, these men conducted several groundbreaking studies. Their separate research led them to the same startling conclusion: degenerative diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even several forms of cancer, could almost always be prevented—and in many cases reversed—by adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet. In addition, cameras follow “reality patients” who have chronic conditions from heart disease to diabetes, and are taught by their doctors to adopt a whole foods plant-based diet as the primary approach to treat their ailments. Hi Robyn,

When you make a batch of green smoothie on your videos you always put it in a quart jar. This is a very simple question – I was wondering if you have found a source where you can purchase individual quart jars for your green smoothies rather than having to buy a dozen jars at a time ?

I know, what a dumb question, huh …

Robert, try a second-hand store like Goodwill or Deseret Industries!! You can buy jars one at a time there and maybe even find some cool old ones.

Hi Robyn, about the alkaline water, have you ever heard/read from people that say since drinking alkaline water, their gums have started to recede? I’d like to have an Ionizer sometime in the distant future but this is one of the things I worry about since my gums are already quite a bit receded. And is it true that using the RO filtration method uses lots of water per each gallon that is filtered?

    1. Robyn Openshaw, MSW says:

Kyung, no, in fact, in the 4 years I’ve been drinking alkaline water, my formerly slightly receded gums have regenerated somewhat. Reverse osmosis water, and alkaline water, does waste water–that’s true. Any filtration does.

  16. Anonymous says:

Thank you Robyn, I’m really glad to hear receding gums isn’t necessarily linked to alkaline water.

We use the waste water from our water filter to rinse dishes, feed plants, fill the hot tub, soak baked on pans, and wipe down counters (it is highly acidic and good for cleaning). Couldn’t stand to see so much water wasted!! We just keep a pitcher under the “waste” nozzle to collect it from our Kangan. Not sure how other filtration systems dispose of their water.
