Best smoothie straw ever!

By Robyn Openshaw, MSW | Jun 02, 2010

Has anyone tried the 7-11 metal Slurpee straws for their green smoothies?   My husband bought some last week and they are great.   I used to get frustrated trying to find good straws for my smoothies.   The regular ones at the grocery store were always too short and narrow.   The  metal Slurpee straws  are long and have a large diameter  so it’s easier to drink a thick smoothie, and I like how they get cold when you’re slurping your smoothie.   Another plus is they’re re-suable.   I just wash mine out right after using and throw it in the dishwasher.      My little girls LOVE them and it’s actually helped them drink more green smoothies!   My hubby got them at 7-11 for .99 ea,   and I think they’re kind of a promotional item, so they’re not there all the time.   Hey Robyn, here’s an idea for you-  why don’t you get some of these straws made up but with your Green Smoothie Girl logo on them instead?   You could sell them in your new Green Smoothie store.   Then I wouldn’t be walking around promoting ‘Slurpees’ on my straws, LOL!

Anyway, just thougt I’d share!

Another great set of straws for green smoothies comes from Glass Dharma:

I ordered 4 of their bended straws (7.6mm inside diameter) and absolutely love them – and they are dishwasher safe. The straw sets also come with a cleaning brush.

  2. I love the idea of unbreakable metal straws- I’ve seen these glass ones-beautiful- but because they are breakable with daily use and washing I’d be going through a few I think. I always seem to be dropping things!

  3. Found these on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/STAINLESS-WIDE-STRAWS-Sticks-Swizzles/dp/B0027YWAKA/ref=pd_bxgy_k_text_b

I haven’t tried them but it sounds similar to what you described. There may be other options out there if we all only had time to research!

I am not crazy about the hot/cold factor of the aluminum and stainless steel straws. Also, the condensation when the straw “sweats”. Quality glass straws actually cool the beverage slightly as it comes up the straw, making it the perfect choice for hot beverages.

I have to say, it mostly comes down to how the straw feels in your mouth as well as how the beverage tastes!

Glass is the easiest to sanitize and when you take them out of the dishwasher, you see how sparkling clean they are, no guess work!

I love my tumbler from Starbucks that was meant for venti frappacinos – it has a reusable straw and is the perfect size for my green smoothies!

Reusable plastics. I suppose anything that we reuse cuts down on all the “throwing away” that goes on, but how long will that tumbler last and where will it go when it gets “old”?

Out there with all the mounting single-use plastics… sigh…

I am very concerned about what all that plastic is leaching into us and the environment. Too much information about this to just ignore, current BPA findings are alarming!

I bought this set of straws from Amazon like a year back and my kids love them. They’re reusable and made from silicone, but I guess the most important feature for my kids is their fun colors. Who knew they would drink smoothies just so they could use their straws? What I love about them is that they’re easy to clean and they’re durable (my kids like to gnaw). 🙂
