K’Lynne comes to my house…with K-Mart pants

Last year in Portland, I barely got to spend any time with someone I think is pretty special. In fact, she and her “before and after” photos, and her story, are in the latest 12 Steps to Whole Foods manual.

She lives in a tiny, one-stoplight town. No health food store. But she took 12 Steps to heart, changed her diet radically, and lost 100 POUNDS in less than a year. She’s a school lunch lady and a mom to four children, including two college students. She’s my age exactly.

She wrote on her blog about how, as a shy, very soft-spoken person, she drove 4.5 hours with her friends to hear me speak in Portland last year and then very nearly didn’t come up to talk to me. She did, though, and I asked her questions in front of 150 people. Details on that from last year, HERE.

She wrote me after that, “I just have to tell you the response to me being on your blog has been amazing, this last week has been mind blowing. All kinds of people emailing me who are exactly how I was and want advice. I tell them what I did and am doing….which is following your program and eating health and exercising.”

There’s really no other way, is there?

We had to tear out of Portland like bats out of Hades to make it to our gig in Seattle later that day. I finally got my chance to talk with K’Lynne at more length this week, sitting on my porch.

Turns out, the day we filmed her, July 17, was her 25th wedding anniversary with her delightful, supportive husband, Chuck.

I asked him on camera to tell me how he felt about K’Lynne. He got emotional.  He said he was so proud of her. So thankful to her. Her choices impacted his life for the better.

I’ve been waiting for the visit from K’Lynne Wagner of Phoenix, Oregon, to tell me more about what it’s like to shed 100 pounds.

Because there are lots of ways to lose weight. And ditch her meds and get her health back.

But there’s just one way to get healthy, and it absolutely has to include a whole-foods diet.

I don’t want to get into whether that should include organic, grass-fed meat…..if you can afford that, that’s between you and your relationship with animals, it’s not my axe to grind. Or what percentage of carbs/fats/proteins you eat, in your whole-foods diet. Or whether or not a little “cheating” with processed food is allowed……you can experiment and discover your own “truth.”

All I care about it that you shift to whole foods, mostly plants!

That’s my core value. It DOES work for everybody. (With variations like the examples and debates above, and lots of individual variety.) And that core foundation is all I’m interested in teaching.

K’Lynne says that green smoothies were a huge part of her shift. She said, “I tried Step 1 in the program, I liked it, so I went on to Step 2, and pretty soon I was doing it all. I would read the manual out loud to Chuck. I was always taking it places, and always reading it.”

Chuck has dropped 20 lbs. by ditching the bacon-and-eggs breakfast in favor of unsweetened oatmeal, fruit, and green smoothie. His wife makes him a salad for lunch, and for dinner he eats lots of healthy stuff K’Lynne makes.

Don’t we all love compliant husbands? We’re happy to do what makes THEM happy—-just indulge us and eat what we feed you!

K’Lynne is off her blood pressure meds and has perfectly healthy cardiovascular biomarkers now. Both she and Chuck are at a healthy weight. How exciting—that we can make change at any age. They are both loving the energy they say changes EVERYTHING in life.

K’Lynne’s counsel to those who have 100 lbs. to lose? Just stay in today. Think positively and make good choices TODAY. Because you really CAN do it. One day at a time.

I gave her the latest, greatest 12 Steps to Whole Foods manual, and I had fun looking through her old copy at the recipes she’d marked as her favorites. We both love Pink Hummus Quesadillas and others.

She talked about how she sees dishes in restaurants that she used to love, and she momentarily feels the pull of addiction…..but then she realizes she actually doesn’t really want those foods any more. Kristin has said the same thing to me. I agree. I love chocolate and dessert. But honestly? The vast majority of it, most of the time, just isn’t interesting any more.

K’Lynne told me about going to Cheesecake Factory this week while on vacation, and ordering the most fabulous vegetarian burger made from faro (an Egyptian grain) and beets. It was so good that Chuck wished he had it, instead of his shrimp tacos.

I’d emailed K’Lynne asking if she wanted to bring any clothes she used to wear. She came with a pair of jeans in her old size, with a  K-Mart tag attached. She said:

“I threw those pants away. Because I’m never going back there.” After she left my house, she and Chuck headed to visit family in St. George and Vegas. They stopped at K-Mart and returned the pants.

Are you inspired? I am!

I have a testimonial from a guy for you, in a minute. But first….

I play on at least two tennis teams, all four seasons a year. Last Tuesday morning, I did yoga for an hour, then did my 20-mile bike ride in the canyon in 100-degree heat. That night, I had our last tennis match of this season, and for some reason my captain put me in as first singles.

That’s where you generally put your best player, since you usually face the opponent’s best player.

I mostly play doubles—hadn’t played singles ONCE since advancing rank in December. Most of my new teammates have played at this rank for years, and they take or even teach private tennis lessons. Most were high-school tennis players. One of them plays on five teams at a time, and many of them play tennis 20-30 hours per week.

I wish I had time for that, but I don’t. My entire team, besides me, is married and not employed outside the home. I started playing tennis less than 4 years ago, not in high school.

For my night matches, my ritual is to drink a quart of green smoothie on the way there. That’s all. And I’ll find myself in a third set—or a second-set tiebreaker at 10:30 p.m.—like I did last Tues., thinking, “I’m not tired at all!” while I see my opponent falling apart.

I truly haven’t been tired once, and I’ve had 8 wins in a row. I won that singles match last Tuesday, 6-4, 7-6, in high winds. Even though I am, to be honest, too new at this rank to be qualified to play the top seed.

My green-smoothie ritual is becoming an important part of pulling that off. My teammates sometimes complain between sets that they’re tired. I never am. Despite hard workouts earlier in the day.

So Tuesday, I got home at midnight because my match was an hour away. Before I went to bed, I read this email from Bruce in Michigan, forwarded by our customer support team because they know I love to read this stuff:

My friend Nancy drops 100+ lbs.

My longtime friend Nancy is a radio personality. I’ve done a couple of shows with her, most recently to talk about the release of The Adventures of Junk Food Dude. Nancy’s youngest child, Anna, refuses to drink soda and loves green smoothies, after they did an experiment and measured the amount of sugar that was in their daily diet, which shocked the kids. (Alex isn’t quite as eager, but Nancy’s working on it. He eats apples and fruit leather now instead of candy bars.)

Nancy emailed me last week asking about dehydrators. Like all of us, she keeps taking baby steps towards the healthiest lifestyle possible. She told me since I saw her last, she has lost ANOTHER 40 lbs., so I demanded photos. Holy cow, this hot mama looks better than she has in the 17 years I’ve known her, and as you can see in these before and after photos, she’s lost over 100 lbs. total.

I wanted to know HOW. She eats tons of veggies and fruits. She sticks to the outside of the store and stays away from processed foods in the middle. Occasionally she eats a little Chex cereal or a multi-grain cracker, but, she says, “for the most part, I am all about things looking like they came in nature when I eat them.”

[This reminds me of what my grandmother said to me once, when I was talking to her about how she cured herself of Stage III cancer with strict adherence to the Gerson diet, and then just ate a very healthy diet for the rest of her life. She said: “It’s not what you do once in a while that’s going to kill you. It’s what you do every day that’s going to save you.”]

Nancy paid attention to what foods bothered her, and she eliminated gluten and other sensitivities she identified, like dairy products.

She told me she eats corn products but worried about the fact that most of it is genetically modified. I told her I eat only ORGANIC corn products. Did you know that if it’s organic, it’s also NOT genetically modified? I just told Nancy that.

Too Much of a Good Thing? Ken and Kaye’s testimonial

I got this letter from Ken:

My wife and I saw you at the San Jose event in April. I was gung-ho to give the smoothie a try, mainly to drop some weight and begin to get back into shape for summer. I’m a logical thinker and all the points you made were clear and compelling. We started the smoothies over two weeks ago.

Since I am analytical in nature and tend to point out flaws or errors, my wife does not like me to watch her cook or prepare anything.  So from my perspective, I would see a jug of smoothie in the frig, either greenish or brownish.  Each day, I would tell her the characteristics of the flavor and make suggestions on how to tweak the recipe.

[Interruption from Robyn here: Ken, Ken, Ken. You’ve got yourself a good woman. Get out of the kitchen unless you want to say, “Honey, you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me! Thank you for my green smoothie today! Regardless of how it tastes, this is making me healthy! You’re a goddess—what can I do for YOU today?” Okay, back to you.]

I’m using the smoothie as a lunch substitute to achieve my weight loss goal of dropping 10-15 pounds.  I would usually go to a deli, Taco Bell or In-N-Out for lunch, so I figured the weight would start coming down easily.  I would drink 1/3 of the smoothie at 10 am, another third at noon and the remainder in the early afternoon.  That also left me free to walk at lunchtime.

After a week, I had dropped only one pound! That was a little discouraging, but one benefit I did find was with my skin.  I have a bald head and after my morning showers, the top of my head has some dry skin that I need to rub or scrub off. Well, that was no longer the case! Woohoo!

I’d lost only two pounds and was whining to my wife. [Ken, search “constipation” and weight-loss related articles on this blog for ideas on why you didn’t lose weight faster.] However, in addition to the lack of dry skin, I also was noticing that I wasn’t getting tired in the afternoons like I used to do. I had discontinued my daily diet sodas as well. Woohoo again!

Then one morning, my wife comes out of the bedroom with tears in her eyes and says she has a confession to make. I hate those kind of marriage moments! Just like the moment before you die, everything was flashing through my head, trying to predict what the heck she was going to tell me, and what I would have to forgive.  She then blurted it out:

“I have been giving you twice as much smoothie as needed.”

She said she watched your video again on making the smoothies and this time noticed you mentioned it would make a two-day supply (2 quarts).  It hadn’t dawned on either of us that the jug I was taking into work was a half gallon! At work, I was pouring it into paper cups for each serving and still didn’t make the correlation to how many ounces the cups held.

For the last few days, I have been just drinking a quart of smoothie, which seems like a piece of cake.  The attached photo is of Kaye and me on a day-long motorcycle ride.  I can fit the smoothies in a little cooler in my bike trunk so it is nice and cold.

For anyone who is having difficulty getting used to the quart a day, try going a week or two drinking a half gallon a day!  That will make a quart seem like child’s play.  By the way, after a few days like this, my weight loss is picking up pace.  Woohoo again!

 

beautiful and young at age 70! three ageless examples show the value of good nutrition!

I often hear people judging the raw vegan movement, or its credibility as a lifestyle, because a particular raw vegan doesn’t look good.  In fact, it is often debilitating health conditions that started the person on the path to raw/vegan in the first place. So they may have a long way to travel out of the health/beauty morass they were in from a lifetime of eating the S.A.D.

It’s also confusing to newbies when people are overweight and say they eat raw or vegetarian. This leads me to believe they maybe aren’t practicing what they preach.  Or maybe they eat tons of nuts, seeds, fruit, and cold-pressed oils—and few of the low-calorie options that make a plant-based diet so healthful, like greens, vegetables, fruits, legumes. Greens and vegetables have to be the crux of a life-giving diet.

Or maybe they eat late at night, or they have no “off” switch. I don’t know. There’s a certain famous raw foodist who is beloved by many people, but who is extremely overweight. It’s not great role model stuff—so confusing for people—but it is possible to be overweight eating raw. Possible….but unlikely!

So don’t judge the folks who just got started last year. Take a look at these 3 women who are all about 70 years old. This first one of Annette Larkin, sent to me by my friend Ben, is ASTONISHING—check out what happens from the time you’re my age (45) till you’re 70, you eat all raw food. WOW!!!

(For a baseline of what she WOULD look like, just compare her to her husband, who has continued on the S.A.D. and looks and feels every bit of his 70+ years.)

And there’s Mimi Kirk, voted world’s sexiest vegetarian, who is over 70.

And there’s Donna Gates, author, who is about 65. She’s known for teaching about fermented, probiotic-rich foods and lots of sea vegetables are part of her diet. Long ago she was totally debilitated by candida.

TEXAS, PART 5 of 7: Video of WENDY and JANET in AUSTIN

As Kristin says, our Texas trip was “pure abundance.” She and I always talk about relationships that are “all good things,” versus relationships or activities or thoughts that are scarcity-oriented or damaging rather than nurturing. We met lots of Texans who are gravitating towards a lifestyle of abundance, even while the culture around them sinks further into “scarcity places” of obesity, illness, and loss.

(Do we not become obese from a long period of scarcity thinking? For instance, “If I don’t eat this now, I don’t know when I’ll get it again.” Or, “I’m so tired, this is the only pleasure in my day.”)

A group of moms packed into a car for the drive into Austin and enthusiastically told me their stories after class. Two of them, in this video, are busy, with 4 and 6 children, respectively. They pretty and young—but Janet overcame some absolutely debilitating health problems. Both of these moms confess to doing my entire 12 Steps program.

What a rush, to know that 10 children are the beneficiaries of the effort of these two women. I’m so proud of young moms who take the time to become educated, and then opt out of “what everybody else is doing.” Listen to their story here (I somehow heard Wendy’s friends calling her Whitney, so Kristin was tasked with covering that up in this video–sorry I’m a moron, Wendy!):
