Exactly Why Artificial Sweeteners Are Terrible

sweet miseryAspartame (or brand name Nutrasweet).  Joe Mercola says it’s the most dangerous substance added to foods. I might quibble with that, because mono sodium glutamate is a neurotoxin every bit as deadly. And the nitrates and nitrites in cured meats are potently carcinogenic.

I’d agree that aspartame is a TOP THREE worst things, to avoid at all costs.

A chemist discovered this concentrated sweetener when testing a drug. Although it was approved in the 70’s, a neuroscience researcher and a consumer attorney objected, and the FDA put the approval on hold.

aspartame3Unfortunately it would not be on hold forever, because chemical company Monsanto bought it and the rest is history. We have over 4,000 food additives approved for use by our FDA, and literally the majority of complaints to the FDA about health problems caused by food additives, are related to aspartame alone. There is far more evidence of the harm caused the American public by aspartame than there ever was about saccharin, which was Americans’ chemical sweetener of choice prior to the 1980’s.

The main complaints to the FDA are related to death, and seizures. Headaches and migraines are also common. When I stopped drinking diet soda many years ago, even though I drank only 3-4 sodas a month, my own migraines stopped completely, never to return.

Others of the 90 documented symptoms of aspartame consumption include dizziness, depression, weight gain, rashes, fatigue, irritability, insomnia, vision and hearing problems, loss of taste, memory loss, joint pain, breathing problems, heart racing, vertigo, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), hormone problems, and many more.

Why would ANY of these symptoms be acceptable to us, in order to eat a toxic chemical? And those are just the symptoms we FEEL. What is happening underneath the hood, that we don’t see or feel? What is happening to our disease risk? There is strong evidence that our soaring Multiple Sclerosis and other neurodegenerative diseases are related to massive consumption of aspartame (and MSG) in North America and Europe.

Physicians and researchers have also documented how chronic conditions can be triggered or worsened by eating this deadly chemical. Those include brain tumors and lesions, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s Disease, and more.

ExcitotoxicityNeurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, M.D., has been a tireless researcher, publishing his results of the effect on the American public of the twin neurotoxins that nearly every American eats: monosodium glutamate and aspartame. He references nearly 500 scientific articles about the neurological damage and other symptoms

He calls them excitotoxins, which means that they “excite the nervous system to death.” Don’t you want your nervous system, myelin sheaths intact, to keep you calm and happy for many years to come? If so, stop eating all Nutrasweet. You’re killing neurons every time you eat it.

Even gum. It’s got to go. It was the last thing to go, for me. But gone it is. No more diet sodas. Anything in a regular store that says “sugar free,” check the label, and avoid all aspartame and Nutrasweet 

splendaSplenda is new enough that data isn’t available. Give it another decade. But saccharin was pushed out of the market by the manufacturers of the patented chemical Nutrasweet. The Nutrasweet bullies, trying to make an exclusive spot in the marketplace for their product, leveraged a study showing that massive quantities of saccharin caused cancer in rats. A much higher level of saccharin than any human could ever eat. I’m not saying this to defend saccharin. For all we know, low doses cause cancer too. It’s a safe bet that eating chemical sweeteners is a bad idea in general. But I’m making you aware of why the entire marketplace shifted from thousands of products sweetened with saccharin, to thousands now sweetened with aspartame.

It’s becoming widely known that aspartame, now, is phenomenally neurotoxic. So the fight to molecularly alter a sweetener, patent it, and foist it on the American public, is underway.

Enter Splenda. Be cynical here. This is where your critical thinking skills serve you well. Watch what has gone on, which is a fight over the money made on addiction, nothing more or better than that, and stay out of consumption of these foods. To participate is to be no better than rats in a maze.

truvia deceptionTruvia. Truvia is the newest of the chemical sweeteners. It’s rather insidious marketing ploy is to align itself with stevia, which Americans began using later than much of the rest of the first world, due to the government strong-arming tactics of Nutrasweet’s owner, Monsanto. This isn’t stevia. It’s molecularly altered FROM stevia, so now it’s a synthetic chemical with sweetening properties.

Ask yourself. WHY would a manufacturer take a legitimate herb like stevia and change it? There’s one answer. PURE PROFIT. Because you can patent it and make a billion dollars. Don’t buy in. Your body does not recognize a synthetic chemical as food. It does not digest, assimilate, or eliminate non-food items. We have learned this from long, hard, sad experience.

We will find out only later what THIS white chemical does to the people who jumped in the maze and willingly started running around in it, gobbling up the pellets.

Be a free mouse. Run around in the field, eating grass and normal mouse food. Stay out of the maze.

Maltitol. It wrecks your gut. It’ll give you horrible gas, and your stomach will do flips. How can this be anything but bad for you? I can find little published on the health effects of sugar alcohols, but if you eat something with maltitol, the immediate effects give you clues that this is problematic as a “food.” 

steviaStevia. Use it if you want. But try to get away from everything needing to be super-sweet. I haven’t seen real evidence, but I’m reading more claims that your pancreas is stimulated by the SWEETNESS of a food, so replacing one toxic sweetener with a nontoxic one may not solve all our problems. Learn to love the taste of real food.

Stevia, at the end of the day, is still a crutch. I don’t know of any ill-health effects reported from its use. Still, only the refined version avoids “aftertaste,” so that’s mostly what’s being used. The less you use it, the better, if you’re serious about a whole-foods diet. However, I’m not concerned about it as a very minor part of the diet, and it would be my sweetener of choice in those I’m reviewing here.

Saccharin. It’s made a slight, half-hearted attempt back on the market. It was put on a rail out-of-town for causing cancer, but the studies did use massive amounts of the sweetener. That said, I wouldn’t call it safe. It’s probably preferable to aspartame, but that’s akin to saying it’s better to have prostate cancer than colon cancer. That’s true, but why have any cancer at all?

In conclusion, I’d far rather have you eat SUGAR than aspartame (Nutrasweet) or Splenda or Truvia. Sugar is deadly for your health, don’t get me wrong. But, eating neurotoxic chemicals is even worse.no sweeteners

fruitdatesnatural-sweetenersThe best sweeteners are fruit and dates. Those are whole foods with fiber (to slow impact on the blood sugar) and many health benefits. The next-best are coconut sugar (my current favorite, lower glycemic index and high in minerals, neutral flavor), raw/organic agave, Grade B maple syrup, raw honey, brown rice syrup, or molasses.

Recovering from oral surgery….part 3 of 3

I am more committed now than ever, to good nutrition. I want to keep my teeth healthy! I don’t want to face more dental decay. We live longer than people did back when infectious disease and dreadful working conditions were rampant. And we’re vain as a culture. So we have to have beautiful, straight, white teeth for, what, 75 years or more? Two nights after my surgery, I was with my family, parents and siblings, listening to all the dental problems we have—we aren’t great for teeth, most of us. Eating an alkaline, low-sugar diet now seems even more important than ever. We can’t eat a rich, acidic diet and expect to have pretty teeth till we’re old.

I went to a famous national park in China, where more centenarians live than anywhere else in the world. The drive into the park is lined with 20’ tall photos of those in the province who are over 100 years old. They were all toothless, except a few who had one or two teeth. To an American, it looks comical. But at what cost do we fossilize the teeth in our mouth? There have to be ways to have a pretty smile and NOT fill our mouth with metal and pleomorphic bacteria. I believe your best shot at doing that is with a good biological dentist.

Undoubtedly right now, there are millions of white blood cells frantically neutralizing, cleaning up in my body. This is a critical time for me to acknowledge and honor the work my body has to do, to adjust to the insult and eliminate the toxic organisms undoubtedly circulating everywhere right now.

My research seems to point to the fact that Dr. Wall is the most experienced, and the most technical, of Utah’s biological dentists. Dana and Dr. Ulm were supportive of my going there.

Dr. Wall serves green smoothies to his patients every day, made from ingredients in his garden and fruit trees. His lobby table is piled high with all the right books—not only many of the books on the evidence against current dental practices, but also The China Study. (That’s the report, for the lay reader, of the biggest, most definitive evidence that a plant-based diet prevents disease, and that eating animals puts us at high disease risk. It’s the biggest nutrition study ever done.)

Dr. Wall’s office also has a Pharmanex Bioscan device in their office. (Go in and get a scan—it’s free! It tells you the level of carotenoid antioxidants in your skin, which is a good indicator of the overall level of antioxidants in your body. The average American is well below 20,000. When the technology first came out, I was eating the Standard American Diet, was overweight, and scanned at 24,000.

Last week I scanned at 80,000, which is off the high end of the chart, even with my immune system revving and having to use a lot of antioxidants to clean up the 10-year old root canals. (Did you know that they only last 10 years? I guess dentists know this. Mine did not tell me.)

Dr. Wall’s assistant, GSG reader Cheryl, said they haven’t had anyone scan that high except Dr. Wall himself, and maybe one other person. (I wonder if that one other could be GSG reader Shellie, who responded to my last blog entry?) Kristin scanned at 56,000, which is also impressive! I’m so proud of her, my meat-and-potatoes, former Diet Pepsi addict.)

Some people’s bodies handle and protect the body from mercury and other poisons better than others. Dr. Buttar taught me that some people are decimated by just one amalgam filling, while others (like me) had many of them removed (with no oxygen, no dental dam, nothing) and seem to be fine.

I recently met a woman at my lecture in Mesa, Arizona, who was covered with horrible-looking lesions. She described it as an auto-immune condition. This woman was clearly miserable. She said she ate no gluten. No sugar. No dairy. She was doing everything right. I asked her, “How many root canals have you had?” She said, “I don’t know, a lot! Four at least?”

I met another woman in Atlanta—same basic story. She had driven hours to be there. She eats a very clean diet and even makes her own probiotic foods, and that’s probably the only reason she is alive. Because she is miserable and very ill with several diagnoses. I asked her how many root canals she had, and she said EIGHT.

I sent her to go talk to Dr. Buttar, who was there with me—for another credible source encouraging her to examine the toxicity in her mouth as the potential cause of her misery.

No one had ever made the connection between root canals (and toxic, unbound metals in the mouth) to medical conditions, for either of these women! My friend Holly, a competitive tennis player at my club, just had Dr. Wall remove her sister’s root canal tooth. Who knows if that’s why Holly’s lovely, young sister with three small children has been diagnosed with Stage 3 ALS that is currently crippling her….but Holly says the symptoms began a year after the root canal.

Yes, this information I’ve been blogging about the past few months makes the entire practice of endodontics a travesty. Yes, it’s hard to imagine why the ADA would continue to insist that amalgam (mercury) fillings are safe and that root canals are good, safe, and necessary. But we have to realize that the entire dental industry would crumble under the weight of hundreds of billions of dollars of liability, if the dental industry admitted how deadly their practices over the past 50+ years have been!

This isn’t me giving you advice to have your teeth pulled. This is me suggesting you may want to see a biological (holistic) dentist. They have departed from the protocols of dentistry’s “standard of care” because they observed and self-educated to understand how devastating what they WERE doing is, for their patients, and then they sought out additional training to practice in far more helpful, more holistic procedures.

This is worth paying attention to, my friends.

Should I shut the heck up about all things not green smoothie?…..Part 6 of 7

About Dr. L telling me I should not talk about toxic dental practices and stick to whole foods topics only?

That is precisely the reason I have a blog in the first place.

I don’t want my readers to be as ignorant as I was when I was 27 years old and allowing doctors to tell me to feed my little boy spoonfuls of liquid steroids. I had dentists wanting to fill holes in his teeth with mercury as he got older (luckily, I never allowed that in any of my children). I’m livid that a dentist sent me home with little blue fluoride pills to feed my baby, not giving me the very real “other side” to the recommendation to have him eat sodium fluoride!

(Fortunately, in the case of the little blue pills, they sat there and expired during the two years after filling the prescription—I felt guilty every time I saw them, but I could not make myself feed them to my little boy. And fortunately, I knew enough that no child of mine has ever had an amalgam filling.)

I don’t have any interest in denigrating any profession.  Certainly not dentists. I have had email correspondences with Dr. L since he attended a class I taught two years ago, and I know him to be a thoughtful, purposeful, open-minded vegetarian athlete who influences his patients for good.

However, I hope more dentists self-educate to offer other options and educate their patients against toxic practices. I’m sure it would be scary to have many practices that underpin your livelihood called into question—dentists carry debt on expensive equipment to perform these procedures and use these materials. But I’m not the researchers who have documented valid, massive concerns for the public health. I’m just one person waving a red flag towards it.

But I’m fierce that since I am blessed with an audience, I hope for my readers to start YOUNGER THAN I DID—or at any point!—with knowledge about controversies regarding their health. That way they won’t unwittingly allow unnecessary root canals in their mouth, as I did.

I hope my readers learn to QUESTION AUTHORITY. I don’t mean REJECT all authority across the board. I mean make your own decisions, do your own thinking, use your intuition. Study an issue well before doing something like fossilizing a dead tooth, or feeding your baby little blue pills of a known poison, or injecting your child with, well, anything. Expect that major industries—all of them—have an agenda. That agenda is often in conflict with the public health.

Don’t believe everything you read on the internet. Learn to be a savvy consumer of information so you know what’s more likely to be true, and less likely. (In the intro to 12 Steps to Whole Foods, I write about evaluating research.)

I will not go silent on subjects where I think we are asleep at the wheel.

 

I may not be an “expert,” as Dr. L wanted me to know. But I am a HUGE FAN of parents becoming educated about the chemicals they feed their little ones. We should become layperson experts as much as possible—these issues have massive implications.

And while I believe dentists are good people trying to help us (Dr. L states that I am criticizing dentists), they do not always understand the implications of our drinking and eating synthetic fluoride.

If that’s the criticism—that I shouldn’t blog about dental issues because I’m not qualified—well, then, I’m not an expert on whole foods either. He didn’t like the quotes I used by a chemist, and he dismissed an entire book on the fluoride travesty by a journalist, because the journalist wrote a book for money so clearly he fabricated a fake controversy.

Adding fluoride to water is forced medication, and it’s not a fake controversy. It’s a real controversy for good reasons. Even if I accept Dr. L’s belief that children have fewer cavities if they drink fluoride or take fluoride pills, he offers no evidence that it’s safe for other organs and systems, to ingest it regularly. That’s because there IS no evidence of its safety. There is plenty of cause for concern and many studies documenting how dangerous it is.

If you feel that my blog should be limited to non-controversial topics related to whole foods only, perhaps you can just skip any posts on other topics? I’m a renegade, and this is a counter-culture blog. It just is.

If I’m blogging 5 times a week, for nearly 5 years now…..I don’t want to have limitations like that. I want to talk about what’s on my mind. Eating whole foods and giving the S.A.D. the boot will always be my favorite topic, though, so come back soon for more on that!

More on mercury amalgam and other dental controversies….dentists weighing in….part 2 of 7

I got back last week from my Northern Cali speaking tour and went right to Dr. Ulm’s office right here in Lindon, Utah. He’s the first dentist in Utah accredited with the IAOMT (Intl Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology). Accreditation requires a rigorous examination of mercury-safe practices and demonstrated knowledge of materials, toxicity, fluoride, and nutrition.

Dental schools don’t teach holistic or biological dentistry. That’s the art of preserving teeth, conservative approaches, considering the health of the entire organism (rather than just a trouble spot in the mouth), and finding solutions that are gentler, integrative, and more natural.

Dr. Ulm does root canals, but much more selectively after other things fail, and in a different way. As it was described to me, he floods ozone in the root canals, which unlike bleach (used to kill organisms by traditional dentists), it can continue neutralizing bacteria over an extended period of time. Then he packs the roots with a highly alkaline material called calcium hydroxide to completely sterilize the tooth. Then after a few weeks, he uses ozone again.

His is a FLUORIDE FREE practice.  Dr. Ulm offers ozone treatment during cleanings as an alternative to fluoride.

He uses digital, collimated x-rays  for 70% less radiation. He does blood analysis to determine reactivity for a specific patient to dental materials. He is trained extensively in removal of mercury fillings safely. He uses high-powered vacuums, dental dams (latex are the only kind that are effective), and supplemental oxygen, for safety for the doctor, staff, patient, and environment.

My family will be switching to Dr. Ulm, and I am considering having my root canal teeth removed by Dr. Walls. These are exactly the kind of dentists I have never had.

My dentists are good, caring professionals. But they toe the line with the ADA’s recommendations to use dangerous chemicals and metals. Clearly they don’t know any better. (If they did, they wouldn’t put themselves at risk either—which is exactly what you are, if you’re packing mercury into people’s mouths every day.)

I have read too many books and studies, I guess: I simply don’t believe in general that more chemical exposure protects us from anything or enhances life or creates health. We are destroying the world with now over 80,000 chemicals in use.

A couple of readers commented when I began the dental topic a couple of weeks ago, that I should just chill out, that the dose makes the poison. My opinion is that some things are poison in any dose. “

All things in moderation” is a popular LDS (Mormon) scriptural reference. However, it does not mean we should eat, inject, or pack into our teeth…..arsenic in moderation, gasoline in moderation, or the second-most toxic element on the planet. (That’s what mercury is.) It means all GOOD things in moderation.

Dr. Ulm’s wife, Dana Robison, who manages his practice, is articulate and educated about the travesties in modern dental practices, and what the alternatives are. They have one of the only ozone machines for dental use in the state. Her husband was an associate in other practices, where he became increasingly concerned about how he had to remove amalgam fillings and dispose of them as hazardous waste. So he finally went out on his own, and sought specialized holistic training not offered in the traditional schools.

Keep in mind, Dana said, we aren’t talking about BIOHAZARDS, but actual HAZARDOUS WASTE. It’s too toxic for a landfill. It’s so toxic Dr. Ulm must use special materials, a mask, special procedures, as dictated by the FDA! No wonder Dr. Kulacz, author of The Roots of Disease, found himself suffering from low-grade depression that only went away when he went on two-week vacations—and then permanently when he banned mercury fillings from his practice.

More than one reader wrote us about the fact that dentists commit suicide at a higher rate than almost any other profession. Actually 6.64 times greater than the rest of the working-age population, according to researcher Steven Stack. He speculates it’s because they don’t have as much status as doctors. (Well, they still have far more social status than factory workers or garbage collectors—but those professions don’t have high suicide rates! And, doctors have a high suicide rate too.)

Others say it’s because people are afraid of dentists. What if it’s because depression is a common side effect of chronic mercury exposure?

Amazingly, even though the FDA has stringent rules for eliminating amalgam as a hazardous waste, it is somehow okay to pack this material into our teeth, right next to soft gums and brain tissue? Many fillings are compromised and eroding, one dentist told me, and the mercury is not completely bound by other elements in the filling as the dental organizations tell us.

Next I’m talking about a practice called Intentional Replantation, and then some comments from dentists I have received.

Root canals….at the root of much disease?

Over 20 million root canal surgeries are done each year in the U.S. alone. I unfortunately have had two of them, before I knew that I had any other option. Dr. James Howenstine says, “Many chronic diseases, perhaps most, are a result of root canal surgery.”

This week I’ve been studying literature on cancer clinics in Germany and Switzerland to see if I want to visit any of them. Dr. Rau of the clinic Paracelsus, said that 147 out of 150 breast cancer patients had root-canal infected teeth on the meridian that includes the breast. Of non-breast cancer patients, only 35 percent had root canals on that meridian.

A root canal is done to save a deeply infected dead tooth that would otherwise have to be removed. You have 3 miles of tubules in every tooth, so it is not believable if a dentist says he cleaned and sterilized everything before capping the dead tooth. Bacteria, viruses, yeasts, fungi, and molds, are then trapped there.

White blood cells do not travel so deep. These organisms, then, morph to learn to live in the absence of oxygen, causing all kinds of health problems. Dr. Hal Huggins writes of those pleomorphic organisms becoming thio-ethers, the strongest poisons on the planet that are not radioactive.

Dr. Weston A. Price most famously discovered that if you implant a diseased tooth in an animal, that animal develops the diseases of the host. Other experts have written extensively about the problem of leaving a dead tooth in the mouth and sterilizing and packing some of the channels but not others.

Most of the research I have seen linking root canals to a phenomenal amount of seemingly unrelated disease is indirect, such as what I quoted from Dr. Rau above. It predominantly notes that those found to have a variety of diseases have a much higher-than-average rate of root canals. Though the links are indirect, there are many of them—it seems unwise to me to ignore them.

Medical and dental sources you may wish to consult confirming what I’m writing about today are Dr. Weston Price, Dr. Karen Shrimplin, Dr. Frank Jerome, Dr. Josef Issels, Dr. James Howenstine, Dr. Hal Huggins, and Dr. George Meinig (author of The Root Canal Cover-up, summarizing the 1200 pages of published work by Dr. Price).

if you want alternatives to root canals, fluoride, and amalgam fillings, or if you want your amalgam fillings removed, you may wish to find a holistic dentist, also known as a biological dentist. In Utah County, we have Dr. Wendell Robertson.  In Salt Lake County, try Dr. Mark Flack. Holistic dentists nationwide are invariably involved in the fight against fluoridation of the water supply.

Locally, Dr. Flack calls attention to some of his patients’ allergic reactions to fluoride, and to a Massachussetts study of 280,000 children that fluoride in water caused children to absorb lead.

Incidentally, I do not know either of these dentists so I wouldn’t go so far as to call this a recommendation—I know they’re holistic, and I know they’re brave to stand up to the ADA. But I don’t know if they’re good, so you’ll have to find this out for yourself. Should a root canal be advised for anyone in my family, I will definitely be contacting them in the future.

 

amalgam fillings—friend or foe?

I never thought twice about letting the dentist pack mercury into my teeth. Then, with that mercury “safely” packed into my cranium, I cracked ice with my teeth relentlessly for many years. Ten years ago I learned about the importance of getting the mercury OUT of my mouth, and I had my totally traditional dentist drill out my fillings and replace them with composite fillings.

He scoffed at the idea that this was needed—but in the end, wasn’t going to watch me go to another dentist to have it done. Unfortunately, he tried desperately to get a dental dam in place in my small mouth—I had read that is important and insisted on it. But when he couldn’t pull it off, I let him drill all that mercury out with no protection besides my tongue from it going down my throat!

Mercury, the second-most toxic substance on Earth, coming off your teeth as gas, crosses the blood-brain barrier and is well known to cause all kinds of neurological havoc, including Alzheimers. This one’s easy. Don’t put metal fillings in your face. If you have them, have a biological (holistic) dentist remove them safely and replace them with composite.

Seven reasons not to drink soda, part 2 of 2

Here are seven kicks in the pants, to help you quit the soda habit:

1. SODA BRAIN! Brominated vegetable oil, or BVO, is added to soft drinks. It’s an industrial chemical used in plastics as a flame retardant. (It’s also in sports drinks.) It is known to cause nerve disorders and memory loss. It builds up in body fat and causes behavioral and mood problems, infertility, and heart problems.

2. FAT ON THE INSIDE! Researchers in Denmark found that those who drink soda have fat stores around their liver, other organs, and skeletal muscles, which leads to diabetes. Soda drinkers in the study also had much higher triglyceride blood fats and cholesterol than non-soda drinkers.

3. HORMONE UPSET! Aluminum cans are coated with BPA, which interferes with hormones and causes obesity, diabetes, cancer, and infertility. Neither Pepsi nor Coke has been willing to switch to BPA-free, while everyone else in America is doing so.

4. FRANKENFOOD! Lots of soda ingredients are corn-derived, and nearly 90 percent of the corn grown in the U.S. is now genetically modified. The U.S. government isn’t particularly interested in testing this horrible social experiment, but we know that genetically modified crops are linked to rapid aging, infertility, and gastrointestinal tract damage. Not that those ingredients really resemble corn by the time you drink them….but you get none of the fiber and other nutritional benefits of corn (which are limited anyway) and all of the downside of the GMO “frankenfood.”

5. CARAMEL CANCER! Two chemicals with reeeealllly long names are known to cause cancer in animals, and they make the lovely brown color in colas. Center for Science in the Public Interest tried unsuccessfully last year to get the FDA to ban them. The chemicals are just cosmetic, but of course Coke and Pepsi aren’t gonna back down. (Look how big the experiment went over when Pepsi tried to make a clear cola called Crystal Pepsi in 1992. All they care about is what sells.)

6. DIET AIN’T ANY BETTER! Even diet soda makes you fat. A study in Texas found that those who drink diet soda gained 70 percent in waist circumference in 10 years, compared with people who don’t drink soda. Those who drank more than two per day? They had a 500 percent waist expansion! The culprit is the neurotoxin aspartame. It actually raises your blood glucose levels, even though it contains chemicals rather than sugar.

7. GET OLD FASTER! Phosphates in cola extend their shelf life and improve taste. But they rob your bones and blood of desperately needed minerals. That leads to kidney problems, osteoporosis, heart disease, and rapid aging. It stops children and teens from building bone mass, in the critical period they are developmentally meant to do so. (After 30, we generally lose bone mass.) Soda manufacturers have increased phosphate levels higher and higher—but a medical journal article two years ago showed that lab rats with elevated phosphates died much earlier than normal.

I watch the addiction of a few people close to me, to soda. One of my closest friends drinks it every day and calls it her “binky.” She kicks the habit but always goes back—because when she quits diet soda, she finds herself taking up sugar. Another tells me he is not addicted but seems to be in denial. I see him drink it 2 or 3 times a day. I’m not saying this to judge—just to express my concern, because soda is not food. It’s toxic acid.

One of my tennis teammates is 70 years old, athletic and quick and has never been overweight. One of the Jackson brothers, two local osteopathic surgeons, told her regarding a surgery they were planning related to her arthritis, “If you are going to drink soda after the surgery, I won’t do it. It will just quickly undo my work.”

If you drink soda, you can virtually guarantee that you will have arthritis by age 50. (Both my parents, nearing 70, have “bone on bone” arthritis problems, and neither of them drink soda.)

Oh, and guess what. I don’t care how young you are—50 is coming up faster than you think! If you’re 25 and think that when you’re 50, you’re washed up and don’t care about anything anyway (I thought this when I was 25)…..well, you’re wrong. When you’re 50, you love your life, you want lots more of it, you care about how you look, you’re a sexual person, and you have lots of goals. (For some reason, 5 years from that age myself right now, I feel the need to tell 20-somethings to care more about their future! I wish I had! I wish I didn’t eat so much sugar in my 20’s and get so much sun.)

I wonder if seven sobering facts about accelerated aging and disease risk from drinking soda would help any of my friends—including you?—kick the habit? Share this with anyone you know who loves the burn of carbonation—or is addicted to the caffeine rush—or maybe both.

I’ve been quizzing my readers who talk to me at classes about their soda addiction. I ask them what they like about it, and carbonation is a major answer. Try drinking kombucha from the health food store once a day instead. Synergy brand is most popular. Or if you need the caffeine boost and haven’t gotten your nutrition to the level where it sustains you, rather than needing the caffeine kick, drink an unsweetened, or stevia-sweetened bottled green tea from the health food store.

A FISH STORY: the food, and the oil supplements

The debate over fish, and fish oil, is to me one of the most interesting ones in nutrition in its complexity. We have to ferret out, from the debate, the sophisticated marketing of the fish industry, which capitalized on emerging data 15 years ago that red meat is bad for us. (But fish is good for us, they clamored—and scrambled to provide “data” that this is so.)

Then we must evaluate the sources of fish, in a planet where virtually every waterway is highly contaminated and fish retain mercury at high levels off the coast of every continent. (Canned tuna is one of the most high-mercury foods you can find. I recommend you eliminate it from your diet.)

Then we have to look at farmed fish—even more problematic because they are fed ground-up fish pellets, made of guts and skin and bones. (Also chicken feces and genetically modified corn, soy, and canola oil.) These fish products, then, actually containconcentrated environmental pollutants.

Farmed fish is well documented to be higher in PCBs, dioxins, and other carcinogenic chemicals than wild fish. Most of the fish consumed by humans is now raised in farms. Wild “free range” fish eat plenty of toxins, too—but not concentrated in “fish pellets” like on the farms. Fish in farms are fed chemicals to make them pink rather than their natural grey color, are low in Omega 3’s due to their lack of a natural diet, and are given antibiotics at a higher rate than any other livestock!

And we have to look at the nonsense about fish oil. Does it really prevent heart disease? Everyone accepted this quickly as “settled science” mostly because a few data points were being repeated by so many doctors and so many supplement companies. But now we have 20 years of data and those who look at longitudinal trends know that fish oil has saved us from nothing.

What if a fish died and was floating in the water? Would you eat that fish’s flesh, or squeeze oil from it to eat, even 12 hours later? Of course you wouldn’t. It would be rancid. So says Dr. Brian Clement, N.M.D. and PhD, with whom I spoke in Orlando and Ft. Lauderdale. What if it sat for days, and then you deodorized and purified it, highly refined it, put it in gelatin capsules, and put it into distribution so it sat another several months before you ate it?

You’ve noticed that you burp up rancid fish oil taste for hours after you take yours? Rancid oils are carcinogens. The pharmaceutical companies that produce the vast majority of the fish-oil pills will pacify you by saying, “But we deodorize the oil.” Ah, so they use petroleum products, like coal tar, to mask the rancidity. I ask again, do you want to refine a fish-oil product and cover up the obvious signs that it is putrefied and not appropriate as food?

This is not an effective way to get Omega 3 fatty acids in your diet. Especially when there are perfect plant-food sources that don’t cause you to burp up rancid nasty.

Flax, chia, and hemp seeds are fabulous sources of Omega 3 fatty acids. I recommend having all three on hand. I love sprouted flaxseed to add to green smoothies. (I know of 28 anti-cancer compounds in flax. And this product is sprouted, which increases not only fiber, but also explodes vitamin and mineral content. Flax has 7x more lignans than the next-highest source—these compounds are highly breast-cancer protective.)

You get no fiber in your rancid fish oil caps. I really don’t think it’s a good source for anyone, of Omega 3’s. Save your money and eat some good whole foods instead:  greens have Omega 3’s in small but highly bio-available amounts.

And chia, flax, and hemp are perfect green smoothie ingredients, but I eat them in lots of ways:  roll raw cookies in them or put them in baked products. I love chia drinks from the health food store (one variety of Synergy kombucha is full of it). A spoonful of chia seed at night, chewed well and swallowed, and chased with a big glass of water, will fill up your stomach and get rid of your hunger.
