What my research says about how green smoothies change lives!

I once blogged 20 different astonishing ways my health improved when I began drinking green smoothies and eating a whole-foods diet.   Here it is: What Changed, When We Switched To Whole Foods, Part 2

But I wanted to get more scientific when I wrote The Green Smoothies Diet and find out precisely what a newbie can expect!

The results of my poll of 175 regular green smoothie drinkers yielded some interesting results that suggest quite definitively that it’s a 10-minute habit worth adopting!   To participate in the questionnaire, one had to be drinking green smoothies for at least 30 days, a pint a day for 4 days a week.   Many were drinking more, up to my recommended 1 quart daily.

The vast majority, or 97 percent, said green smoothies noticeably improved their health or quality of life.   Wow!

Very exciting to me is the fact that 84 percent of those drinking green smoothies are so enthusiastic about the positive health benefits that they’ve told others about or taught them the habit!

These are the positive health effects people experience, listed in order of their frequency among the research respondents:

85.4 percent experience more energy.

79.2 percent experience improved digestion (more regular and/or complete bowel movements, no straining, soft/formed stool, etc.).

65 percent experience fewer cravings for sweets and processed foods.

52.3 percent experience a more positive, stable mood.

51 percent experience an improvement in skin tone, or fewer blemishes

50 percent experience weight loss.   The average reported pounds lost is 17.3 lbs.!

(Keep in mind when considering this very impressive statistic that some of the respondents had been drinking green smoothies only 30 days, and some of them did not have any weight to lose!

48.5 percent experience an increased desire to exercise.

44.6 percent experience improved sleep (need less of it, decreased insomnia, more alert in the mornings, etc.).

41.5 percent feel less stressed out.

40 percent experience blood sugar stabilization.

39 percent experience people telling them they look better.

35 percent say their fingernails are stronger or grow faster.

26 percent say their hair is shinier or their dandruff gone.

18.5 percent experience a decrease in PMS symptoms.   (Consider that some of the respondents in the survey are not females of menstruating age.)

17 percent report an improved sex drive.

Other positive health benefits reported by survey respondents include these:

7 people said: Arthritis symptoms/pain gone or reduced

3 people said: Hyperthyroid condition improved (reduced or gone off meds)

2 people said: Seasonal allergies gone or decreased

2 people said: Reduced asthma symptoms

2 people said: Migraines gone or reduced by 80 percent

2 people said: Acne improved or gone

2 people said: Eczema or dry skin cleared

2 people said: Gray hair returned to original color

Decreased blood pressure

No more hypertension

Was able to go off cholesterol meds

Was able to go off Prilosec

Haven’t gotten sick in a year like I always do

Moles disappeared

Deep facial wrinkles “barely noticeable”

Less nasal congestion

Lump on leg getting smaller

Liver spots fading

Tendonitis gone

Muscle soreness gone

Hypoglycemia improved

No more bloating, gas, indigestion, constipation

Avoided a hysterectomy, lifelong menstrual problems returned to normal

Easier to breastfeed

Don’t sunburn any more

Gallstones gone

Depression symptoms gone

Lifelong bad breath gone in two weeks

Ended coffee addiction

Just feel better

The risks of a new green smoothie habit are limited to an 18.5 percent chance of a short-term, uncomfortable cleansing reaction that include the following symptoms:

headaches, skin breakouts, diarrhea, nausea, bloating, intestinal gas, cramps, constipation, vertigo, dizziness, fainting, lethargy or weakness, runny nose, mucous in the back of the throat, liver pain, mood swings, depression, emotional crisis

The top six benefits that people experience when starting a green smoothie habit are, in order, more energy, improved digestion, fewer cravings for sweets and processed food, a more positive/stable mood, improved skin, and weight loss.

It’s hard to look at this data without being compelled to give green smoothies a try!

How GreenSmoothieGirl.com was born–it’s a crazy story!

Welcome to GreenSmoothieGirl.com!

I put this site up in August, 2007 when I went on a reality show and ABC/Disney told me I’d better prepare for an onslaught of publicity and requests for information.

My family eats a rather unusual diet that has led to exceptionally good health.  People notice because we buck American trends, and it shows.

I frequently have people who know about our diet show up on my porch, call on my phone, and stop me in public.  People are sick, they are overweight, they lack the energy to get through the day . . . and they want help.  They have lots of questions.  My experience as a nutrition educator has led me to this conclusion: People want to eat right. They just don’t know how.

The reality television experience was just the impetus I needed to make information about my family’s lifestyle more accessible to more people.

Little did I know what GreenSmoothieGirl.com would become!

A year and a half later, I have a small group of people working on the site, have written two books, and we are getting 80,000+ visitors monthly.  I take my responsibility to teach people how and why to eat whole foods very seriously and am willing to do whatever it takes.

This newsletter is my first-line effort to educate a terrifyingly underinformed public about basic principles of good nutrition, as well as, very specifically, how to live a healthy lifestyle.

I’ve had a wide and varied career. But besides being a mom, I’ve never done anything I feel is as important as my role teaching, helping, and nurturing people towards good health.

Today, a woman stopped me at the grocery store.  She said, “I have been seeking answers to my health problems.  I saw your car and the web site burned into my mind.  I’ve spent three hours reading your site, so far, and trying some things you suggest, and I’m amazed how when I eat right, I don’t crave bad stuff!”

That’s the beautiful thing about whole foods.  They are what God put on the planet to nourish us.  When we eat them, we don’t need anything else.  We get off the roller coaster of craving bad food and succumbing to the temptation and then hating ourselves for our indulgences.  GreenSmoothieGirl.com is the summation of my 15 years of studying exactly how to implement good nutrition in a real American family’s diet.

When we eat whole foods instead of the Standard American Diet, we have the boundless energy to not just dream big, but also fulfill those dreams.

Getting off meds on a GSG diet

The BEST kind of evangelizing there is, is the EXAMPLE kind.   Just do what you do, and people will ask–no lectures or persuasion needed.   I was just writing in my book about how Victoria Boutenko used to run people down in the Safeway and tell them they needed to eat a raw-food diet.   It’s a funny image.   That is Never. Gonna. Work.

But there is no shortage of miserable, ill people, and they are looking for a prophet–anyone who knows more than they do, anyone experiencing good health, anyone willing to help.   I know that a lot of you are helping others, many of you helping LOTS of others, and I want to hear about that in the questionnaire.   Because my new book challenges readers to not stop at just changing their own health, but at influencing others you care about (who in turn influence more people, and more people, and it never ends–it becomes quantum).   It’s RADICAL.   Not like the teenagers use the word, but like the original definition.

I got a call this morning from a man who has lost 80 lbs. and bought a Total Blender on GreenSmoothieGirl.com, asking the usual questions about how much to feed the kids, how long it keeps in the fridge, etc.   He said he got an email blast from his doctor, an M.D., saying,

“Here’s a link to something that will absolutely change your life, that has the power to help you lose 100 lbs. or more, with no other lifestyle change.   DO IT.”  

And what was that “something?”   It was a link to my goofy little 3-min. home-video green smoothie demo on YouTube that has now had 50,000 hits.   Green smoothies rock.

Denise Punger, M.D. is a GreenSmoothieGirl 12 Stepper and a brave new voice in modern medicine.   She’s a board certified doctor married to another medical doctor, but she’s also a mother who has breastfed for 12 years and delivered her last baby via home birth.   She’s an advocate of home birth, doulas, breastfeeding, and trusting a mother’s instincts.   Her Permission to Mother: Going Byond the Standard-of-Care to Nurture Our Children is an important book for young mothers to own.

 

 

Eric Schlosser’s Fast Food Nation and Chew on This: Everything You Don’t Want to Know About Fast Food are geared towards teens.   Give your kid an incentive to read one or both of these books.   My 11- and 13-year old kids loved these best-selling exposes and never wanted to set foot in a fast-food establishment again.   Okay, they never set foot in fast-food establishments anyway, except to make a bathroom stop on a trip.   They inspired my oldest daughter to become a vegetarian, and she later converted her sister.   Written for preteens and teens, this is an excellent education in why you want to avoid all fast food.   I overheard my daughter after she read Chew On This telling a friend regarding the friend’s sugar habit, “You know that children diagnosed with diabetes by the age of 8 shorten their lives by 25-30 years, don’t you?”   (Heh heh, my evil educational plot is working!)   Too bad the author states in the introduction that his favorite meal is a fast food burger.

 

 

Ron Seaborn’s The Children’s Health Food Book is a seriously weird book!   A friend recommended it to me, and when I picked it up at a health food store, my then-four-year old son went crazy for it.   I read it to him several times a day, because he begged me non-stop, until I just couldn’t take it any more and was making up my own words.   The antiheroes are the Starch Creature, the Dairy Goon, the Meat Monster, and the Sugar Demon.   Of course, the vegetable, fruit, and whole-grain superheroes come in and save the day.   This book is good for younger kids–just beware that the preschool teacher might call you and say your kid is scaring the other kids by pointing out how bad their snacks are (this actually happened to me).

I’m back from Europe! The GreenSmoothieGirl Law of Physics. . . part 1 of 2

Dear GreenSmoothieGirl: How will I find the time to follow your program?

On this site, and in my book, I often preach to the unbelieving a certain principle.   It can be an uphill battle to get people to buy into my counterintuitive principle of physics until they give it a try.   And that GreenSmoothieGirl Law of Physics is, an expediture of energy yields more energy.

 

People are always saying to me, “I just don’t want to spend any time in the kitchen: I’m exhausted at the end of the day and don’t have the energy for it!”   Many folks have gotten in the “energy conservation” habit, of carefully doling out their limited energy for just the most basic of life activities (sleep, eat, work, start over), all while watching with great horror that energy pool ever shrinking.

 

Readers of GreenSmoothieGirl.com know what I say, and I will repeat it here.   A minute of kitchen time, eating the way I teach you to prepare food, yields two minutes of newfound energy.   Time freed up that you used to spend in a depressed funk, or worse, oversleeping.   Eating a GreenSmoothieGirl diet gives you quantifiable gains in energy that open up a whole new world of service opportunities, goal achievement, fun, the ability to invest in new and old relationships, and the disappearance of “energy conservation.”

 

And I say, like with spiritual faith, if you can’t believe that?   Just experiment upon the word.   Simply try it and tell me if I’m wrong.   Don’t do it for two weeks, where everything is new and at first things take you longer.   Commit to making my recipes for several months, because the learning curve flattens and you’ll finally understand what I’m talking about (as many have attested to in GSG.com blogs).   For anyone who begins this journey seriously ill, you may need to give this experiment a full year to see the gains clearly.  

You think that spending a resource, causing that same resource to double, is simply not scientific?   For the sake of the semantic debate, even before you put it to the test if you haven’t already, let’s compare it to three other arenas in life, to lower your cognitive dissonance.   Those three comparisons tomorrow.

What saves you time in your whole-food kitchen?

I would like to solicit the help of all you kitchen geniuses on a couple of topics for next year’s release of the printed version of 12 Steps to Whole Foods.   Today’s topic: what saves you time in your kitchen?   Some things may not be the absolute ultimate, nutritionally (see a few that I’ve used as examples below), but they save time and therefore break down the time barrier to creating a whole-food meal.   We DON’T want to save time by tossing hot dogs on the dinner table–but we DO want you to save time by using pre-minced bottled raw garlic instead of rolling, peeling, and tiny-chopping every clove, every day.   Everybody contribute an idea or two here, okay?

–Freezing greens or use frozen spinach when it’s not in season, in green smoothies.

–Buy a jar of minced, fresh garlic you get at Walmart (or other grocery stores).

–Buy a $10 electric citrus juicer and juice a whole bag of Costco lemons, freezing 2 Tbsp. portions in an ice cube tray.   Chop the peels in 8 pieces and freeze them in a baggie, using a chunk every day in your GS.

–Drain and crack open a whole case or two of young Thai coconuts at a time.   Freeze the meet in sandwich baggies and freeze the juice in pint jars in the quantities you use for your favorite 12 Steps recipes.
