More on mercury amalgam and other dentistry controversies…dentists weighing in….part 1 of 7

I need to revisit the dental issues, as we’ve had a ton of email about it.

What to do instead of a root canal, you’re asking? It’s a very good question that I have, too. I interviewed Dr. Ulm’s office in Lindon, whom I will talk about in a minute. They told me Dr. Judson Walls in Bountiful (Utah) is a phenomenal holistic dentist. A couple of you had sent his name or mentioned it here on the blog, too.

I called Dr. Walls’ office, and it turns out his staff are GSG readers who’ve read my books—and his home page says you’ll be served a green smoothie in his office! I LIKE HIM ALREADY! After our chat, I promised to visit their new office when they move, soon.

There in his practice, also, is Marietta Bergdorf, NMD, funny, because I just recommended her today to a Stage III lung cancer patient who sought me out at the gym two days ago and asked for my help. I invited her to my house to use my infrared sauna, where she was in tears today because of pressure from the oncologist and his staff—and her husband and children—to get a needle pumping poison in her vein TOMORROW. The oncologist, as I predicted to her that he would, scoffed at the idea that her diet has anything to do with the cancer, or its reversal. She questioned him about the drug he wanted to prescribe, which has been used since 1974. She said, with he and his nurse and everyone in the room looking at her sternly, “I felt so small.” I reassured her that she is not small, that this is HER life and her choice, that she has time to research before submitting to a therapy from which you can never go back, and that her questions are good ones.

Dr. Bergdorf helped cure Parker Jensen’s grandfather of Stage IV colon cancer, and she helped my mother get the LDS Church to approve thermography instead of mammography for her to be able to go on a mission.

Ah, back to holistic dentistry. Dr. Walls will not do root canals. That is courageous. Instead, they extract an abcessed tooth and wait six months until it heals. Then, your options are a bridge, partial denture, or zirconium implant. His staff said he is an “artist” and makes these options look beautiful and natural.

A traditional endodontist believes teeth must be saved at virtually any cost and considers himself a professional failure if he extracts.

What if extraction is NOT the worst option? What if the most toxic pleomorphic organisms on the planet, according to some experts and much research, is the very worst option? The kind that evolve when a dead tooth is mummified on top of miles of tubules full of decay and bacteria that become deadly when deprived of oxygen?

Every holistic dental text I have consulted praise the work of Weston Price, whose research was apparently thorough and methodical, with very high standards. Every time he took a diseased tooth and implanted it under the skin of a rabbit, that rabbit developed the same diseases the owner of the tooth. The evidence that trapping a dead, infected tooth in the mouth forever is incontrovertible, that it’s highly disease-causing.

Dr. Robert Kulacz, DDS, says this in his book co-authored with Thomas E. Levy, M.D., J.D., called The Roots of Disease: Connecting Dentistry and Medicine:

“After a total immersion into both the remote and current research on dental products and procedures, I discovered that my beliefs about many of the currently accepted views on the safety of some dental materials and….procedures, such as the root canal procedures, were wrong. The link between dentistry and systemic health was real and absolutely undeniable. Furthermore, much of the most pertinent information I discovered has been known for a long time and seemed to me to have been covered up. I became angry about being misled in my education and I immediately changed the focus of my practice—and totally regained my health.”

Dr. Kulacz had been experiencing mercury vapor toxicity signs for a while before studying the issues, and he didn’t know what he would later learn, that the U.S. EPA stated in its 1997 report to Congress that the highest body burden of inorganic mercury comes from amalgam fillings. The average American with eight surface amalgam fillings is over 35 times above the U.S. Public Health MRL (minimal risk level) for chronic mercury vapor exposure!

If you search on the internet, you can find ADA-apologist dentists claiming that mercury fillings are safe and that eating a can of tuna gives you far more exposure! Infuriating and ridiculous. Your mercury fillings are constantly offgassing, every single day. The tuna isn’t.

Why would the A.D.A. allow this? Drs. Kulacz and Levy say, “The ADA has backed itself into a corner by continuously declaring amalgam completely safe. Even now, in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, this amazing assertion continues to be ADA’s official stance. To admit now that the use of amalgam should be discontinued or even that it might be harmful would undoubtedly invite a barrage of lawsuits. Furthermore, if amalgam was banned, the insurance industry would be hit with a major increase in claims, as the alternative fillings are most costly and people would demand that their amalgam be replaced. It would cost…$250-300 billion to replace all the amalgam fillings…in the teeth of the American public. It would cost an additional $12-15 billion a year to use alternative non-mercury fillings from this day forward.”

Mercury amalgam is not officially approved by the FDA. Federal law requires that any material implanted in the body for 30 days must undergo extensive evaluation for safety. The FDA didn’t put amalgam in this category because dentists manufacture it in their offices so by their reasoning, it doesn’t need to meet safety criteria. This goofy reasoning has led to no safety studies conducted on amalgam.

Just because amalgam has been used in dentistry for a long time does not mean it’s safe. For many years, “experts” told us asbestos, DDT, dioxin, and Agent Orange were safe, too.

One dentist wrote that people should not remove intact fillings. I am not here to advise all my readers to run to a dentist to get their metal fillings drilled out and replaced.  I have, and I know many people educated on this subject who have. I know several traditional (not holistic) dentists who will not put amalgam in their children’s mouths.

I do not believe that only cracked/damaged fillings are dangerous. Both holistic dentists whose offices I called this week state that even intact mercury fillings are not completely bound in the materials and are significantly off-gassing.

What I have written here should simply give you a starting place to do your own investigation. If you ARE going to have your amalgam fillings replaced, I now feel that it’s important to go to a biological dentist with the high-suction vacuum, extra training in mercury removal, latex dams, etc.

amalgam fillings—friend or foe?

I never thought twice about letting the dentist pack mercury into my teeth. Then, with that mercury “safely” packed into my cranium, I cracked ice with my teeth relentlessly for many years. Ten years ago I learned about the importance of getting the mercury OUT of my mouth, and I had my totally traditional dentist drill out my fillings and replace them with composite fillings.

He scoffed at the idea that this was needed—but in the end, wasn’t going to watch me go to another dentist to have it done. Unfortunately, he tried desperately to get a dental dam in place in my small mouth—I had read that is important and insisted on it. But when he couldn’t pull it off, I let him drill all that mercury out with no protection besides my tongue from it going down my throat!

Take a look at this highly-watched scientific proof that mercury can and does off-gas out of your teeth. You often don’t know your teeth are cracked.

Mercury, the second-most toxic substance on Earth, coming off your teeth as gas, crosses the blood-brain barrier and is well known to cause all kinds of neurological havoc, including Alzheimers. Here’s a five-minute video by Canadian researchers about the literal “brain damage” caused by mercury exposure.

This one’s easy. Don’t put metal fillings in your face. If you have them, have a biological (holistic) dentist remove them safely and replace them with composite.

The next issue, root canals, is thornier!

Will my teeth go bad on a raw diet?

Dear GreenSmoothieGirl: Will my teeth go bad on a raw diet? I am troubled by the Weston A. Price Foundation’s claim. –Megan

From Robyn: I have noticed observationally that those on a long-term 100% vegan diet sometimes have dental problems. I do not think that this diet is necessary. (I wonder if there are good cooked plant foods that may be helpful to our health that can prevent deficiency, which people throughout time have utilized–grains and legumes, for instance.)

Nor do I think the evidence points conclusively to human beings needing meat, far from it, in the face of the Oxford-Cornell China Study. If you feel compelled eat animal flesh, it’s still clear that it MUST be organic and it must be minimal. Not three times a day as many Americans do.

(And I have noticed that when most people say “meat,” they mean beef and pork. When I say meat, I refer to the flesh of all animals.) Most people are B12 deficient, but the idea that vegetarians are deficient overlooks the fact that most meat eaters are, too. 80%+ of people in America are B12 deficient, in fact.

I don’t eat meat and I am not B12 deficient. I haven’t had a cavity in years (although my Sonic toothbrush may share in the credit for that—those things are amazing). My dentist says my teeth are “naturally white,” and when I go in for cleanings, I’ve been told twice, “I don’t know why you even come in, because you have no plaque on your teeth.” None of this was the case before I cleaned up my diet.

While the Weston A. Price research found that people who eat meat, among indigenous peoples, had strong teeth, we cannot compare that to modern populations and draw the conclusions that we should eat the kind of animal flesh that modern people do.

What we eat, and what people living far from a processed diet did at the time of Price’s studies, are terribly different. Today’s animals used for food are caged in tiny, filthy pens, and are full of antibiotics, hormones, and terrible diets of genetically modified grains or diseased animal parts. We cannot assume that because the native people Price studied had clean animal flesh in their diets, that means we can eat lots of dirty animal flesh and achieve strong teeth (and bones).

I have more to say, but local Dr. Garon Larson, D.D.S., says it better, in response to Megan’s question:

“Can I respond to Megan’s question about teeth?

I am a local general dentist who drinks green smoothies and eats whole foods and a plant-based diet with my family.   I was on ABC4 morning news yesterday and KSL noon news segment for children’s dental health awareness month (Feb).   The news anchor asked me what parents can do to help children have healthy teeth.   My answer:   Stop feeding your children the Standard America Diet, which is processed foods from cans and boxes, processed sugars, and fast food.   Give your kids real food to eat.   Absolutely the best thing you can do for your teeth, mouth, and body.   Healthy teeth are really important when eating a whole foods diet because this is real food and you need strong healthy teeth to chew and break down the food to digest it well and absorb the nutrients (unless you want to blend everything up in your Blendtec!).

Teeth form when we are very young, almost all permanent teeth have completed development of crown and most of the root by the age of 6-8 years old.   Good nutrition (from whole foods) is so important for our young children.   After tooth development, we are mainly talking about maintaining the teeth, which is removing food and debris which gets left on our teeth (biofilm).   Standard American Diet is very hard on teeth as full of refined carbohydrates and refined sugars, which the normal flora (normal bacteria) in our mouths use as fuel and metabolize these substances, giving off acid as a byproduct.   The acid demineralizes the teeth and begins the decay process.   Chewing whole foods which are fibrous stimulates the gum tissues, has a natural lavaging effect on them, and promotes healthy gums.

There is absolutely no need for animal products for healthy teeth or gums.   I received a certificate from E Cornell University last year in Plant-Based Diet and I can confidently say that and I am confident in the way my family eats…that’s the way my kids eat and they have great teeth!

dentists, and taking antibiotics

Here’s a letter I got recently from a wonderful dentist who reads this blog/site. I won’t give my own response until I hear some of yours. What are your thoughts?

Dear GreenSmoothieGirl:

I think you are pretty conservative and avoid antibiotics, but I had an interesting experience recently in my dental practice that I want to share with you.   You influence a lot of people to make better choices for their health, and if you agree with me and my position as a health care provider and trying to do what is in the best interest of my patients, maybe you can pass this on to your readers.   The AAOS (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons) currently recommends that persons who have had total joint replacements should take one dose of antibiotics one hour prior to high risk dental procedures (not a whole week of antibiotics, just one dose) to avoid bacteremias forming in the artificial joint and causing a systemic infection and possibly failure of the artificial joint.   I had a patient recently who refused to take an antibiotic before a procedure because she avoids taking antibiotics in general.

I contacted her orthopaedic surgeon, and the nurse from his office recommended the same protocol for her, and she still refused.   She walked out of my office informing me there was no way she was going to take the antibiotics and she would find another dentist who would do the work without making her take the antibiotics.   I worry about her health and the risks she is taking.   I also worry about the dentist she finds to treat her without following the standards of care, as his license may be in jeopardy for treating her this way if complications were to arise anytime down the road.

I try to avoid antibiotics whenever I can for myself, but there are times when it may be worth the major complications which could arise.   I am not willing to put my license and my career on the line to treat someone who refuses to follow the written protocols and standards of care for surgeries which they have had done in the past, which now place them in a higher risk category.   I don’t know if you understand what I am saying here, but let me know if you agree or disagree with me.

What my dentist says about whole foods . . . and one really cool testimonial

I went to the dentist for a cleaning yesterday. My friend Craig is my dentist, and before he looked at my (perfect, cavity-free) x-rays, we chatted about life for a while. He is jealous that I can work from home with the freedom to do things with my kids. He said this to me:

“I would love to take a year off like you are doing at the university. And if I did, I’d start a business like what you’re doing with your books and GreenSmoothieGirl. Because people should know something important about their dental health. That is, it doesn’t matter how many carbs you eat. You can eat fruit all day long. It would not affect your teeth at all. What rots your teeth is REFINED carbohydrates. If people would stop eating sugar, they wouldn’t get cavities. But eat the whole grains, fruits, complex carbs–they’re great.”

So mull that over, as I have been. Someone in the dentistry community should be out front telling people that! And today I got this very eye-opening testimonial in an email. Remember my materials on oxalates in Chapter 1 of 12 Steps? This is interesting:

“I have medulary sponge kidney disease that causes me to make kidney stones. My urologist sees me every 6 months to keep an eye on things. I started drinking green smoothies about 5 weeks ago, having 2 a day most days. I lost 6 pounds in 3 weeks, and haven’t gained it back. About 10 days ago I had an ultrasound of my kidneys and 5 days ago I had the usual blood work done. I recently noticed my face (I’m always complimented on my youthful appearance) glowing–and my husband obviously thought so because he reached out to stroke my cheek with the back of his hand. I asked if I had food on my face and he said, “No.” And then he stroked my cheek again.

Back to today’s check-up with my urologist. He was very pleased, saying, “You always have many kidney stones in both kidneys–usually the left has more than the right, but they both have multiple stones. Your scan shows NO stones in the left, and a stone the size of a pin point in the right kidney.” He had to rock the wand forward and back to find it! He said, “You’ve lost weight. You look great! Whatever you’re doing, keep it up! I don’t need to see you for a year.”

Here’s the kicker: in the past he asked me to stay away from “high oxalate” foods such as kale and spinach since my kidney stones are calcium-oxalate stones. But, what greens have I put in my green smoothies? Kale, spinach and beet tops. And I’m better than I’ve been in YEARS AND YEARS, in terms of kidney health.
