Last night’s class in Provo

After class last night at the Good Earth, a woman named Kim talked to me about her recent venture as part of the Biggest Loser contest sponsored by Utah Valley Magazine.

She said the trainer they provided to work out with her four times a week set her up with a program requiring her to eat a large quantity of meat four times a day, including whole baggies of beef jerky.

She said, “I’ve never been so weak in my life—I could barely get through the day. The jerky tasted like blood in my mouth. And at the end, I’d gained 12 lbs.” She felt defeated and humiliated.

Two weeks ago she read my book and started drinking green smoothies. She kept telling me about how she had acne her whole life, but I couldn’t see it. Finally she said, “And look, it’s gone! And, I’ve lost 3 lbs.!”

Thanks for sharing your stories with me after class. See you in Orem tonight!

Coconut oil and skin: a reader tells me her experience

Dear GreenSmoothieGirl:

I’ve sent emails in the past since telling you all of the wonderful things I love about green smoothies (and YOU and your website) and I’m still amazed by the things you continue to share with us. I can’t tell you thank you enough and how much I really appreciate you sharing your passion with everyone.

Besides drinking my green smoothies I’ve tried the sprouting, and I’m now educated on everything from the benefits of colloidal silver to the coconut oil.

I know you receive so many letters from excited people but WOW I’m excited about coconut oil. Last 2 weeks my face looked horrible, acne that would not clear up and then all these flaky patches and peeling skin.

I tried moisturizers and acne medication and it only made it worse!! It was so bad Robyn I didn’t want to be out in public. Long story short I woke up and remembered what you said about using it nightly in place of a moisturizer along with all the antibacterial, anti-parasitic, anti-fungal and so on. I think I was afraid of making the acne worse because it looks greasy when first applied.

I’ve used it only 2 nights and boy did this do wonders!!!! Soft smooth skin, dry patches gone and acne is almost all gone. I even look like l have a glow. Never thought I would be so excited about leafy greens, sprouting and healthy oils.

Thank you to you and I really look forward to meeting you in the near future. My close friend just became hooked with me on your Hot-pink Breakfast Smoothie and now I over hear him telling everyone about Green Smoothie Girl and when someone has something such as diabetes he tells them to read your website and starts telling them about greens, chia seeds and coconut oil. I love it!!!

My mom even asked why I soak my almonds and was blown away when I told her about the nutrition value increasing and how all the store bought almonds are pasteurized. She woke up and wanted to know more.

Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!! Now I understand why I was always so sick in my 20’s and most of my 30’s (39 now).

Ps. I’m also excited to say I finally get to purchase my Blend Tec. I’ve probably blown up several old hand me down blenders but I stuck in there trying not to make excuses for not getting in those greens. I look forward to a smoother smoothie now.

The risks of a new green smoothie habit are limited to an 18.5 percent chance of a short-term, uncomfortable cleansing reaction.   The top six benefits that people experience when starting a green smoothie habit are, in order, more energy, improved digestion, fewer cravings for sweets and processed food, a more positive/stable mood, improved skin, and weight loss.

It’s hard to look at this data without being compelled to give green smoothies a try!

Research results: Green Smoothies Change Lives [part 1 of 2]

The results of my poll of 175 green smoothie drinkers yielded some interesting results that suggest quite definitively that it’s a 10-minute habit worth adopting!

The vast majority, or 97 percent, said green smoothies noticeably improved their health or quality of life.

Only 18.5 percent had uncomfortable, short-term cleansing reactions.   The following symptoms were reported:

Headaches

Skin breakouts

Diarrhea

Nausea

Bloating

Intestinal gas

Cramps

Constipation

Vertigo

Dizziness

Fainting

Lethargy or weakness

Runny nose

Mucous in the back of the throat

Liver pain

Mood swings

Depression

Emotional crisis

Very exciting to me is the fact that 84 percent of those drinking green smoothies are so enthusiastic about the positive health benefits that they’ve  taught others about  the habit!

These are the positive health effects people experience, listed in order of their frequency among the research respondents:

85.4 percent experience more energy.

79.2 percent experience improved digestion (more regular and/or complete bowel movements, no straining, soft/formed stool, etc.).

65 percent experience fewer cravings for sweets and processed foods.

52.3 percent experience a more positive, stable mood.

51 percent experience an improvement in skin tone, or fewer blemishes.

50 percent experience weight loss.   The average reported pounds lost is 17.3 lbs.!

(Keep in mind when considering this very impressive statistic that some of the respondents had been drinking green smoothies only 30 days, and some of them did not have any weight to lose.)

48.5 percent experience an increased desire to exercise.

44.6 percent experience improved sleep (need less of it, decreased insomnia, more alert in the mornings, etc.).

41.5 percent feel less stressed out.

40 percent experience blood sugar stabilization.

39 percent experience people telling them they look better.

35 percent say their fingernails are stronger or grow faster.

26 percent say their hair is shinier or their dandruff gone.

18.5 percent experience a decrease in PMS symptoms.   (Consider that some of the respondents in the survey are not females of menstruating age.)

17 percent report an improved sex drive.

More data tomorrow.

What my research says about how green smoothies change lives!

I once blogged 20 different astonishing ways my health improved when I began drinking green smoothies and eating a whole-foods diet.   Here it is: What Changed, When We Switched To Whole Foods, Part 2

But I wanted to get more scientific when I wrote The Green Smoothies Diet and find out precisely what a newbie can expect!

The results of my poll of 175 regular green smoothie drinkers yielded some interesting results that suggest quite definitively that it’s a 10-minute habit worth adopting!   To participate in the questionnaire, one had to be drinking green smoothies for at least 30 days, a pint a day for 4 days a week.   Many were drinking more, up to my recommended 1 quart daily.

The vast majority, or 97 percent, said green smoothies noticeably improved their health or quality of life.   Wow!

Educate kids about nutrition

Sometimes I wonder if my teenaged son is absorbing what I teach him about health, or if he’s just too annoyed with me and absorbed with “fitting in” to care.   Yesterday after double header baseball games, one of the coaches ranted at the boys about the huge mess they’d made in the dugout, with all their candy wrappers and trash from snack-bar nachos, hot dogs, and sodas.   Cade had, at the game, a green smoothie and two whole-grain sandwiches (as usual).

On the way home, Cade was telling me about the dressing down the team had received.   I said, “What they SHOULD have gotten is a dressing down about what effect their eating habits are having on their game.”   That would never happen, of course, because adults don’t want to lecture kids when their own health habits are terrible.   And of course, it’s a taboo subject.   But some boys on the team have recently had surgery for rampant, years-long infection, some have seriously stunted growth, and several keep breaking bones including growth plates.

The week before, I had talked to Cade about the sunflower seeds he’d been eating, week after week, for several years.   You’re thinking, but sunflower seeds are good, right?   Not the kind the baseball players eat.   And I hadn’t said anything much because my son already feels like a bit of a sore thumb in the dugout, eating the stuff I bring him.

But my son has recently developed some seasonal allergies, and he has a bit of acne.   I told him that his massive refined-salt consumption eating those salted seeds every week is contributing to these two problems that are making him miserable.   Furthermore, I explained that MSG is in those packages of Dill Pickle and BBQ flavored seeds.   No wonder all the kids and coaches are addicted!

I never buy the seeds for him, but he’s always eaten handfuls of the ones in the dugout, purchased by others.   He stands out in right field spitting seed shells.   But yesterday, my son told me he didn’t eat ANY.   I’m really happy that he listens to and values what I say, since my other kids “get it,” but I sometimes wonder about him.

Keep talking, and do it away from the situation (I didn’t march up to him in the dugout and lecture him).   Someone once said, “Teach people correct principles and let them govern themselves.”   They make mistakes, but they come around if you keep teaching.
