Sunscreen

I used to think sunscreen protected me from skin cancer. Didn’t you? The FDA does not protect us because they haven’t published safety standards for sunscreens.

The Environmental Working Group has listed 150 toxic and cancer-causing chemicals in cosmetics, and many of them are in sunscreen. Some of them, including petroleum products, ironically enough, are linked to skin cancer! Products on your skin are absorbed directly into your bloodstream, so topical application isn’t much better than eating the product.

While it’s wise to avoid being sunburned, which does cause skin cancer, a moderate amount of sun is good for acquiring Vitamin D to build strong bones and a strong immune system.

Of course, when we’re at the beach or the pool, we don’t want to run inside after 20 minutes to avoid sunburn. So what do we do?

At Expo West in Anaheim, I had access to all the “natural” skin care companies, and I interviewed all of them and examined their prices and ingredient lists. Here’s the bottom line with those products: the more zinc they have, the more they will protect your skin. If they have less than 20%, they simply aren’t going to be effective. But zinc is the expensive ingredient. I also don’t want to recommend any product to you that has harmful ingredients.

The company I found that I like best uses 25% zinc, plus only natural ingredients including Vitamin E, shea butter, vegetable glycerin, and vegetable emulsifying wax (for water resistance), spring water, and these organic nourishing ingredients: green tea leaves, rose hips, extra-virgin olive oil, and jojoba oil.

The formula contains NO harmful chemicals found in other formulas, chemicals known to cause liver and kidney damage like propylene/bultylene glycol and sodium laureth sulfates. No parabens, methylisothiazolinone, talc, or toxic fragrances.

Don’t buy into “waterproof” formulas. First of all, dangerous chemicals are used in commercial sunscreens to cause a water barrier, and ALL sunscreens need to be re-applied every two hours. The high-SPF formulas have the highest levels of toxic ingredients.

This sunscreen I really like is SPF 20 (don’t believe claims of higher than that!). The Kids or Sport 3 oz. tube comes with an organic lip balm (value: $3.49) FREE in the GreenSmoothieGirl.com store!
