What happened when my root-canal teeth were pulled

Can you stand one more update related to traditional dentistry versus holistic (biological) practices? It’s the last chapter in the story I told you in August.

I told you that when I had my two root-canal teeth extracted, I paid a few hundred dollars for an analysis of what bacteria were found in them. I just got my results back from the lab in Colorado.

Dr. Wall (my biological dentist in Bountiful, Utah) told me BOTH my root-canal teeth he pulled were failing. Since then, I’ve talked to half a dozen other dentists and people who have extensive experience with root canals.

You would think that, with all the things I do right, I would have better luck than that. I confess to being more than a little disappointed that a bone graft and so much dental work would be required, notwithstanding my earlier years of eating lots of candy, ice cream, and diet soda.

But did you know that the EXPECTED time that a root canal lasts is a max of 10 years? That’s right—endodontists KNOW that their procedure has a very limited life. My brother Dave was in an ATV accident 10 years ago, where his teeth planted in the steering wheel and killed ten of them. He had root canals on all, and guess what.

Yep, they’re all failing.

Not that those pleomorphic organisms trapped in an anaerobic environment, in a dead organ, are really contained during that 10 years anyway. They’re not! “Failing” just means that there are visible, discernible signs of rampant infection and decay. (Obviously it didn’t get that way overnight!)

In my case, the signs were mild tooth sensitivity, and a blister on the gums covering the tooth. A raging, itchy rash on my trunk and arms that came and went for 2.5 months, until I realized it was related to my teeth.

Have you ever thought about the fact that the tooth is an organ? The biological dentist knows this. It is part of an interconnected meridian in the body. When it dies—or is injured and we kill it dead and leave it there—we are truly fossilizing a dead organism in our living mouth. And we think this won’t cause problems!

So, my sample came back saying that 10 bacteria were detected in the tooth sample. None of them were in the “active” concentration, where the microorganism is alive and well and not being effectively attacked by my immune system.

But two were in the “bright” concentration, which means “heavy concentration of the microorganism.”

They were:

Campylobacter rectus
Prevotella melaninogenica

I’m not panicking about this. Fact is, everybody has candida, everybody has cancer, most people probably have strep and even MRSA micro-organisms too. Everybody has many yeasts, molds, fungi, viruses, bacteria, and the toxic waste byproducts of those critters, in our blood and gut and organs.

Believe it or not, candida can actually have valid functions in the human body. In proportion, in tiny amounts in a teeming, healthy ecosystem, it’s not a problem.

The problem is when those baddies get out of hand. When the good guys in the body, like macrophages and healthy micro-organisms, are overcome (by antibiotics! GMO-frankenfoods! Sugar feeding yeast and fungus!) and the baddies get out of control.

Killing tissues / organs such as your teeth, then trapping the bacteria in the teeth, deprived of oxygen, makes the baddies become super-psychos. That’s a gross oversimplification, but a google search on those two bacteria reveal that my own two breeds of baddies cause heart attacks, impaired immune response, and…..genital tract infections!

Shudder.

It’s weird to be missing two teeth. But I’m glad the super-psychos are gone.

Dr. Wall had offered me an antibiotic the day of my surgery, since he knows the baddies are now out, and running around. I said no thanks, that I wanted to help my body manage it. And it did. Every time I think of this, I send a gratitude message inward, thanking my body for heroic immune function during a rough patch!

For two weeks after the surgery, I didn’t feel great. Not sick or anything, just like my immune system was straining. Like it was for the few months between the root-canal “failure” and actually having the teeth out. I just didn’t feel like myself. I did my workouts, but they were tough.

Then I went to my Body Talk practitioner, Ellen. Learn about it at bodytalksystem.com. I have resisted “energy work” for years. I still love things that are evidence-based, so I gravitate towards things mostly easily proven.

Body Talk uses EFT, muscle testing, and more to listen to the body and shift its energies for clearing and release through shifts in various systems. The results show up physically, in relationships, in emotions, and in well being.

I’m not the world’s most metaphysical person, even if I understand there’s a mind-body-spirit connection. (I just don’t trust human beings to be able to decode something that sophisticated. It always seemed kind of…..unknowable.)

But my friend Wendy had been nagging me to go try it out, for years. Her children had phenomenal results, utterly life changing for their whole family. And my amazing employee Amanda felt the same way, and repeatedly told me she wanted me to go see Ellen.

I went, with my rather notoriously skeptical (but committedly open-minded) attitude.

I’ve been several times now. And the results are undeniable. I won’t get into a detailing of ALL of my results. Too much for this blog.

But after my oral surgery, plus two weeks of feeling like I was struggling, Ellen told me I had 48 microorganisms ranging my body since the teeth were pulled.

And she did her voodoo on me. I’m not kidding when I tell you that you have to be OPEN MINDED to receive and accept this kind of work.

And I left there completely WELL again. I mean, I never felt, for one minute, like I had for 3 months prior to that. Shocking. I didn’t even EXPECT that from the session. I just noticed the next morning that I felt like myself for the first time since the blister appeared on my gums and the rashes started. I have not had one minute, since then, of the old feeling of being only 80%. I have felt only 100% healthy and energetic.

So, it’s too good not to share, if you’re open to some mind-body connection-energy work. If you’re in Utah County, or Boise, Ellen can be reached at 801-669-1745.

And Dr. Sean Ulm in Lindon, and Dr. Judson Wall in Bountiful, are my holistic dentists.

PLASTICS: which ones to avoid, and why!

You’re likely aware that plastics are harmful to your health. They have phenomenally long half-lives, and don’t break down in the body, causing ongoing damage.

Look on the bottom of your bottle, and see the number in the little triangle. Look carefully at this graphic, because the  numbers aren’t consecutive. The worst grades of plastic are 6, 3, and 7.

A 7 is the worst grade of plastic, and most labeled 7 contain the most infamous chemical in plastics: Bisphenol A (BPA).

Water and other liquids leach BPA. This endocrine-disruptor chemical can do crazy things to your hormones. The U.S. finally banned the chemical in baby bottles, after the European Union and Canada did. Wiki says a study found BPA in 96% of pregnant women. It’s been linked to obesity, breast and prostate cancer, and ADHD.

Please don’t use old baby bottles or any other plastic that isn’t BPA free that comes into contact with your food or water. More and more companies are making their plastics without BPA, including Blendtec’s blender jars. But our FDA continues to support the use of BPA in cans, including drinks, and infant formula!

Another chemical to avoid is PVC (polyvinyl chloride), known as vinyl, which contains phthalates, known to cause birth defects in baby boys, testicular cancer, infertility, and asthma. PVC plastics are labeled with the 3 triangle.

So, anything you use that’s plastic, make sure it’s labeled 1, 2, 4, or 5.

Our GreenSmoothieGirl bottles, of course, are BPA free, vinyl free, and phthalate free.

Organic vegetables are our birthright!

Check out the two tomatoes Patty is holding on the left. They came from the several acres growing 100 yards from my house, conventionally sprayed with toxic pesticides that will last literally generations in the groundwater and in my body and everyone else’s who live on this street.

My children are breathing it, and tracking it into my house on their shoes.  I didn’t know Patty bought these tomatoes. I guess she wanted to dehydrate more of them for the winter than we had coming out of the few plants in my garden.

The two tomatoes on the right were grown organically in my garden. I grew them with compost, and no effort whatsoever to worry about pests. The variety we planted were supposed to be SMALL tomatoes! I’ve lived here for 10 years, with my garden, and have never sprayed anything on anything.

Like John Denver sang, “Only two things that money can’t buy, and that’s true love, and home-grown tomatoes!”

If you grow your own garden, don’t let modern agricultural practices lull you into a sense of complacency that herbicides and pesticides and artificial fertilizers are necessary and righteous.

REAL farmers for thousands of years amended the soil with decayed plant matter, returning it to the Earth as food for the next crop. It’s a beautiful, eternal round that God intended.

He didn’t intend Monsanto to try to outsmart Mother Nature to inflict “Roundup Ready” crops on us. That’s where Monsanto has engineered crops that are impervious to their deadly Roundup chemicals.

I read Monsanto’s web site touting the virtues of their wonderful chemical approach to all the world’s problems. Monsanto’s frankenfoods, the company claims, are “a perfect fit with the vision of sustainable agriculture and environmental protection!”

Monsanto’s good-hearted vision allows farmers to “conserve fuel and decrease the overall amount of agriculatural herbicides used.” Are you buying any of this? I hope not, because there’s one reason ONLY for Monsanto’s practices:

THEY’VE PATENTED THEIR FOODS. Google and read about the epic battle between MONSANTO and DuPONT over who gets to grow these herbicide-resistant man-made foods. Then tell me if you think the actions of these companies are in the interests of public health.

Monsanto brags that they’ve now commercialized funky strains of alfalfa, corn, cotton, canola, and sugarbeets.

(Yet another reason not to eat sugar.)

In my google search, the NEXT item down, after Monsanto’s mind-blowing benevolent spin on its horrific agricultural agenda, was a Huffington Post article about farm animals having rampant miscarriages because of Monsanto’s “Roundup Ready” GMO crops. These crops are highly linked to depleting the healthy flora in the human GI tract, leading to our  culture’s widespread digestive problems. It’s also linked to obesity and mental illness.

Purdue University’s Dr. Don Huber wrote Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack (who fast-track-approved Roundup-Ready GMO foods) begging him to “avoid a general collapse of our critical agricultural infrastructure.”

Plus, the stuff doesn’t work. The Washington Post wrote recently that Roundup Ready Alfalfa is unnecessary, harmful to farms, more toxic than DDT (banned in the U.S. many years ago), and actually causes weeds to develop a resistance to Roundup.

You can’t recall a genetically modified plant from the environment. It changes the environment forever, and only Americans are inflicting this on the public with impunity. Europe bans GMOs and carefully regulates pesticide use, as do the other first-world nations.

Please. Grow your own food, with whatever space you have, the way people did for thousands of years. Stand up against conventional ag practices—by buying organic, and local too, and boycotting Monsanto and other chemical companies who are the terrorists of our food supply.

So what if the birds and bugs get a few. What we are doing isn’t just unconscionable—it’s unsustainable too. We cannot keep dumping millions of tons of new chemicals, annually, into our soil, water, and air, without massive ramifications to human health and the entire ecosystem.

Depression and Anxiety Nutrition Strategies, part 2 of 3

1.      Are you getting enough greens? They contain the most bioavailable minerals of all foods. Bioavailable refers how much of the nutrient is actually utilized by your body, as opposed to how much of that nutrient is in the food. (For instance, dairy milk is high in calcium. But human beings use very little of it, and the milk from cows causes other problems, for instance, it causes the human body to produce mucous. For baby cows, the calcium in their mothers’ milk is VERY bioavailable.)

Living green foods have to be plentiful in the human diet. Our digestive tracts, the way they’re built, demand lots of plant food. And all the nutrients in greens are highly bioavailable to humans. Cows, too, it turns out. Jordan Rubin is raising “green cows,” who not only eat only organic plant food, but eat GREENS rather than grains and other weird additives to increase weight that the big farms are now feeding dairy and slaughter cattle. Greens are what cows in nature eat, and the quality of the cows’ milk changes radically when they’re fed something else. Even organic dairy ranchers aren’t going to the length that Rubin is, to create a food supply that our grandparents took for granted, before we morphed our food supply chain into a Frankenstein-ish disaster.

In my research published in The Green Smoothies Diet, half of my 175 respondents said green smoothies alone improved the stability of their mood.

2.      Are you eating 60-80% raw or better? I am not convinced that 100% raw is necessary or even ideal, but a diet high in unprocessed, raw foods gives you enzymes that take little away from your higher functions so that you can achieve truly transcendent states, like peace, happiness, harmony in relationships, and self-actualization.

Patty, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 7 years ago at age 40, has been living with us for a month and making our food, according to the way we have always eaten. We eat cooked soups made with vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds. In addition to lots of raw in the form of green smoothies, vegetable juice, salads, and just snacking on carrots, bell peppers, etc. Patty is used to the obsession, on the other side, with RAW, RAW, RAW.

I love raw food and EVERY meal or snack around here is 60-80% raw. Count it in the bulk of the food, or count it in calories, I don’t care—but eat a primarily raw, plant-based diet. But humans have rarely eaten “all raw,” and legumes and whole grains are good food and very difficult to eat much of, unless they’re cooked. It’s a natural human tendency to want their food hot, now and then.

Patty said to me, “I feel amazing, eating your diet!” It’s not 100% raw, but it is 100% whole foods, and well over half of what we eat is raw.

I’m not absolutely convinced that eating organic, wild-caught, or free-range meat is all bad, as a smaller part of the diet. I don’t personally want those things, or prepare and serve them in my home.

And when the economy falls out—which it will, since it’s mathematically unsustainable that we continue forever the way we’re going—and you have to pay $40/lb. for your meat, what will you eat? Best to just learn to eat like that anyway. The U.S. government massively props up meat and dairy. It doesn’t prop up vegetable, fruit, and legume crops. Obviously we’re paying less than we should for beef, if it takes 20 lbs. of plant food to yield 1 lb. of beef.

3.      If you ARE eating meat, please ensure it is wild-caught fish from clean waters (not farmed, and not caught in dirty places like, no offense my Michiganian friends, the Great Lakes). Or range-free, organic chicken or turkey. Or grass-fed, organic beef. NEVER processed meat or dairy. It’s full of hormones. It surely has the potential to affect mood disorders.

4.      Are you staying out of the drive-thru? Virtually everything sold there puts you at high risk for depression. Even the toxic dressings on the low-nutrition salads. Not only because of low nutrition, high calorie foods, with their cascading effects.

But also the fact that they are denatured and your body has to work excessively to digest them. This takes away from higher functions, like neurological function. This results in a far higher likelihood that your brain and spirit are brought low, too, even as their host, the physical tabernacle, is forced to struggle and toil. Possibly the worst thing coming out of the drive-thru are toxic, heavy fats, which are difficult to metabolize, in some cases impossible to metabolize, and cause cell damage.

And the fried foods you buy in the grocery store have got to go, too. Chips. Gone. Please.

WINNERS from my last post, back to Dr. Wall for a checkup

Look who won the fabulous Zen Society skin care products—I’m sure you’ll love them like I do!

Candi Nicholls, Lehi UT  84043

Sarah Peterson, Suwanee GA 30024

Deidre Gibb, Los Angeles, CA 90066

Congrats, ladies!

I went back to Dr. Wall to get my stitches out yesterday. I’m now missing two back teeth, and 5 fillings on the OTHER side of my mouth are re-excavated and filled, plus a “bone graft,” (really it’s just implanting my own blood, spun down to stem cells, a fibrin-rich plug that allows you to BUILD bone where the jawbone was excavated). In six months, that bone will be ready to accept a zirconium implant, screwed in. I’m not going to fossilize any dead teeth in my mouth, ever again—but that doesn’t mean I don’t want pretty, white, straight teeth! None missing! If I do implants to replace both my lost teeth, my total bill for all these procedures will be about $14,000.

I told Dr. Wall the task of the biological dentist is to give us a beautiful, white smile, without killing us in the process.

I’ve had a hard time eating much else besides smoothies, vegetable juice, and soups.

Tomorrow, I’m sharing a couple of YUMMY soup recipes we made up, with our garden produce, to help me limp along on my liquid diet.

This time, my Bioscan was 87,000. Up 7,000 from 2.5 months ago. That’s a super-way-crazy-psycho high score. I was glad to know that my antioxidants are still gonzo, because if you have a raging infection, your cells are gobbling up nutrient reserves, and FAST. Dr. Wall said everything is healing brilliantly and my bone graft looks excellent.

I could feel that since my surgery, even though I hiked to Stewart Falls with Emma on Labor Day, did a hardcore spin class last week, and generally carried on with life, I felt my immune system still straining. I was vegetable-juicing, but all those deadly pleomorphic organisms from those two tooth cavities are now ranging my body, and I FEEL it.

I told Dr. Wall this, and he asked me if I wanted a low-intensity antibiotic. He doesn’t like them, stated that they mess up your GI tract and immunity for TWO YEARS, throwing multiple systems out of balance, but also said, “I also don’t like all those micro-organisms running around inside of you either.”

I said no thanks—I’m doing okay. But I showed  him a swollen lymph node in my neck, just downstream from the removed molars.

He massaged the side of my neck. It hurt. He showed me how to “milk” it—like squeezing thick stuff out of a straw, he said. A few hours later, the swollen painful lymph gland was back to normal, not painful or swollen.

My whole life, if my immune system is taxed, that’s my inherent weakness: lymph glands back up. (Some people, it’s their lungs, or sinuses, or something else, where acidity and infection tends to settle.) Fortunately, lymph glands can be easily manually stimulated.

I met a couple of GSG readers there in the office, who have been going to Dr. Wall since I first blogged about him. (Good luck! It takes weeks, or even a couple of months, to get in! But don’t give up—he is outstanding and moving to a larger office. I want him to train another dentist in his modalities to shorten the wait time.)

I want to promote biological dentistry because I’m SICK that people are putting poison in their mouth every day all around me. They’re cutting the nerve and artery to an ORGAN, and shellacking it in the mouth, and then assuming everything will be just fine. This practice is anything but fine.

I told Dr. Wall he is one of my heroes. He loses popularity with the A.D.A.-loyal dentists, and many other people, in the interests of doing what’s right. I respect that.

Tomorrow, the recipes for an amazing vegan cream of tomato soup, and an out-of-this-world Indian carrot soup with garam masala in it. My survival strategy for the past 2 weeks.

First three to write us get free Zen Society skincare products

I don’t sell any skincare products—but virtually all the skincare products you can buy in a drugstore or even high-end makeup lines have dozens of toxins in them. Anything you put on your skin is used by the body the same way what you eat is. That is, it goes right into the bloodstream. Fragrances are particularly harmful, as a recent study showed that the average fragrance has 14 chemicals in it that weren’t disclosed on the ingredient list.

I love the Zen Society hydrating rosewater mist! I have it next to my desk, since I spend so much time here. It’s a beautiful pick-me-up, absorbs oils, hydrates against air conditioning, sun/wind, and travel; sets makeup (I don’t wear it but that’s a benefit, if you do) to look dewy; and balances skin pH. I also love their Elderberry Toner, alcohol-free, made from witch hazel, a natural astringent, as well as lavender water and elderberry, which are anti-aging, firming and toning.

The first three to write us, support123@greensmoothiegirl.com, with your address, get both products free. Their website is ZenSocietySkincare.com (and “like” them on facebook). http://www.facebook.com/pages/Zen-Society-Skincare/160716130710109?ref=ts
