Another #GreenSmoothieFail!

gsgfail3Monte B. wrote us and said, this is why we don’t eat food on the family room couch! [Note from Robyn: show this to your kids when they ask WHY they can’t take their food in the family room!] I spilled my green drink. Isn’t it pretty?

My wife has been badmouthing my carpet cleaner with a furniture attachment since the day we got married. It worked like a charm on this mess, and now she’s a believer!

Thanks, Monte, we love the GreenSmoothieGuys who hang around this blog too.

Live Detox starts May 4! Here’s what a detoxer said about her experience…..

Full-SupportDetox PromptOne of our amazing GSGLife Founding Instructors, Natalie Hadley of Ogden Utah, introduced her friend Shelly to the GreenSmoothieGirl Detox in December.

Shelly shared an amazing story that I thought you would enjoy reading. If you’re like me, before you undertake a signification cleanse program, you’re terrified! (I wanted to do one for years, before I finally did it. This was long before I developed the GSG detox, of course, which is fully supported and anyone can do it. It’s challenging, but not scary, like the one I did 20 years ago, when I ate nothing but veggie juice, and bentonite clay and psyllium husk powder in water, for 3 weeks!)

Natalie is again supporting friends in our upcoming May 4 Detox and you can see her at myGSGLife.com/NatalieHadley or email her at sunshineofwellness@gmail.com.

We do a supported Detox just 3 times a year, so join us! The average person loses 12-13 pounds and enjoys deep cleansing of the liver, kidneys, and gall bladder. Watch my short video about it HERE.

This is Shelly’s story:

What a great start to 2015! My sister and I were talking at the beginning of this year. She told me how her friend, Natalie Hadley, had told her about a detox program she was going to do. My sister and I had for several months compared aches and pains we have been having, as well as lack of energy. As she shared about the detox with me, I told my husband and 25-year-old daughter about it.waist measure man (1)

My husband was just going to start a biggest loser contest at his work. As we talked about it, we were all at a mental state where we were ready to go for it, so January 3 started our new adventure—GreenSmoothieGirl Detox #1!

I probably ought to tell you a bit more about my family. My husband is Samoan and so a meal was not complete without meat, and it is heavily salted to make it taste even better. For family gatherings, often four or five meats are common and maybe one salad. Sugar has always been my weakness, so I have battled weight for many years. This detox was definitely a big change for all of us.

I must admit the first couple of weeks when I was using our Ninja blender, our vegetables were not blended as much as we would like and it made for some interesting smoothies—but we stuck with it. When my daughter bought us a Blendtec, we all celebrated.

After the first couple of weeks of the detox, my husband commented on how he felt his hands weren’t as swollen and joints didn’t hurt as much. We started going on more walks, and walking farther each time. We stuck with the detox for the whole 26 days and saw some great changes.

After the first detox was over, we decided to do the 31 day green smoothie challenge and try to eat more whole food, plant-based meals. We stuck with this then realized in March that my husband had just about 26 days to go before his contest was over at his work. We decided to do the detox one more time! Doing this the second time, we realized what we were getting into, so our attitudes were even better.

green smoothiestraw berries (1) (Small)Our daughter in Florida also did it with us the second time, and it was great to share our successes with each other. Eating healthy has become a good topic for all of us to visit about. We are sharing recipes and good tips with each other.

When my husband weighed in at the end of his contest, he had lost 48 pounds (16.9% body fat)! And won the biggest loser contest! I lost 37 pounds and my daughter lost over 30 pounds! Not only did we lose this weight, but we have all felt better with more energy. We are exercising more. My daughter has several times said, “Thank you, Mom, for doing this for us.” We all did it together–it definitely was a team effort!

Another real benefit is that before we never used to have breakfast. Now the three of us get up together and have our green smoothie as well as fix our lunch bags before we go to work. It is nice to spend this time together in the morning and start our day out right.

shutterstock_187878188 (Small)I am starting a new hobby this summer of gardening, and I look forward to trying new recipes with our garden vegetables and herbs. We are heading to Samoa in October, and my husband has already said that he wants to do one more detox in September before we go.

Thanks so much to Natalie Hadley for her great classes, encouragement and willingness to share with us. Thanks to Robyn Openshaw for sharing all of this information with us and for all the research that she has done. I am so excited for the 12 Steps to Whole Foods Workshop this Saturday, and to continue to develop healthy habits.

[Note: Robyn is teaching the local GSGLife Instructors her 12 Steps to Whole Foods course, this Saturday, and it is sold out and wait-listed. However, she is teaching it to ANYONE who wants to attend, Saturday, June 6, get tickets HERE!]

Life is great!

Enter at the pearly gates

GSGLife Founding Instructor Julie Shupe, in Ogden, texted me last week,a photo of a check to me personally, for $60. She said, call me when you get a minute, I have a great story.

She said that this lovely lady, Janice, had attended a class Julie taught. Julie bragged to her class that she knows me well, as she talked about changes in her family’s life as a result of incorporating the great habits in the GSG Detox and 12 Steps to Whole Foods. Afterwards Janice approached her. “How WELL do you know Robyn?” And Julie said, “Well, I’m on a texting basis with her!”

Janice said, “I’ve been following GreenSmoothieGirl for many years. I bought a 12 Steps to Whole Foods manual years ago, and when it arrived, it was a little bit bent. I contacted Customer Support, and they sent me a new one and asked me to return the bent one. But my son came over and wanted it. He said he didn’t care if it was a little bent. So I gave it to him and he paid
me for it.”

“I’ve owed Robyn this money for a long time. I don’t want to just mail it in, because I don’t know if she’ll actually see it. I want to be forgiven, because I want to enter at the pearly gates some day and this has been weighing on my conscience.”

I laughed, hearing the story. And texted the photo to all GSG employees. We’d had some strange things happen that week, and I wanted to remind them of one important thing:

We love GreenSmoothieGirl readers. They are really special. They are a cut above. And our whole existence is to serve. I never thought, in 2007, that my little website would get 8 million page views per year on the Internet. Nor that I’d speak in 88 cities in 2014. My career has been a dream come true, that I get to do something that makes a difference in people’s lives. (We have lots of great plans, too. In July, the whole site will be overhauled, to be blog centric, and much more beautiful and updated. We are developing some exciting things and want to enrich life far beyond that
first step, the green smoothie.)

heart thankyouThe funny thing is, this isn’t the first time this has happened. Once I got a check and an apology note, years later, for a book someone accidentally took home from a class, that was a display. Another time I heard a story much like Janice’s, someone who kept a product and guilt ate her up for years.

It makes me think so highly of my readers. If they think this tiny “sin of omission” will keep them out of heaven, as far as I’m concerned, while I’m not the one awarding those spots, they’re already in.

I love you all. Thank you for supporting the GreenSmoothieGirl mission, educating and empowering people in taking America back from the Standard American Diet.

My former traditional dentist friend weighs in about MERCURY FILLINGS

toothpasteDear readers, it’s been a while since I posted on my research about the exciting, burgeoning field of “biological dentistry.” A couple of years ago I wrote fairly extensively about my own dental saga (thanks to the first 30 years of my life eating a LOT of sugar, and doing lots of toxic dental work needing to be replaced).

I have been fascinated by Dr. Michelle Jorgenson’s conversion from traditional dentistry to “biological dentistry.” Today I was in her office and saw her employees reading articles she required, on how to treat dental problems as part of the whole organism’s overall health. Very exciting! Because she lives near me and has shown her education in, and commitment to, holistic dentistry, she is now my family dentist.

I think you’ll find this very interesting, Dr. Jorgenson’s story, and her thoughts on mercury fillings and the state of modern dentistry:

Best-Michelle-e1378620930582
Dr. Michelle Jorgenson

My name is Dr. Michelle Jorgensen, and I am a second generation dentist.  My father is a dentist, and knew I wanted to be just like him. He is an avid runner and has been extremely healthy his entire career, and that’s what I thought all dentists were like.  When I started to have nagging health issues about 15 years into my practice, I didn’t think it had anything to do with dentistry. Food sensitivities, numbness in my right hand and arm, forgetting things, my nose constantly plugged, difficulty breathing…what in the world could all of these things be from?

Gloomy days started and I thought about leaving my practice.  I emailed a colleague about my issues, and he said my email reminded him of himself 10 years earlier.  He suspected mercury toxicity. I was shocked. I had not placed a mercury filling for over 15 years. He asked if I removed mercury fillings in my practice.  Every day I do!  That was the beginning of my journey to become a biological dentist.

Mercury + Silver = Amalgam

Let’s step back.   The first mercury dental filling material was made in France in 1816.  A Frenchman mixed mercury with shavings from silver coins.  It formed a soft paste that could easily be packed into a hole in the tooth, and shaped before it turned hard.  This was brought to the US in 1830 and was an instant success.  This new filling material was inexpensive, easy to use, lasted a long time, and sealed the tooth fairly well.  It became popular very quickly.

That first filling material was 50% mercury (the liquid shiny stuff in thermometers) and 50% silver.   When I told a friend, who was a successful professional, about my health problems from mercury, he looked confused. “There is mercury in silver fillings?! They don’t put mercury in, anymore, do they?” I’m afraid so – in fact, 50% of those “silver” fillings today and 150 years ago, are mercury.

mad hatterMad Hatters

When this material was introduced, barber/dentists did much of the dental work, and they loved these new fillings. They were easy to place and they could make money on them.  The few  doctors that did dentistry were not so excited about it.  They knew the symptoms of mercury exposure from watching hat makers. The hat makers would use mercury to turn fur into felt.  After repeated exposure to this mercury, the hat makers started showing bizarre behavior.  This is where the term “mad hatter” comes from – the mercury quite literally was making them mad!

The doctors were concerned that mercury was being placed into teeth. but the barbers didn’t care.  They were making money on these easy fillings.  Mercury/silver fillings were here to stay.

Toxic Material

That is the background to dental mercury fillings, and they are still being used today in nearly 50% of dental offices in the US. Science and medicine has since confirmed that mercury is a poison to our system.  Why are dentists still placing these fillings?  Recently, I talked to a dentist who graduated from dental school 4 years ago.  I explained my concerns about my patients and myself  breathing in mercury vapors as I remove old mercury fillings.  He said he’s never heard anything about it.  He didn’t know it could be a problem for patients or dentists.  He graduated FOUR years ago. This is not new information. It’s obvious the dental community at large doesn’t even understand the problem.

Controversy

The safety of mercury fillings continues to be a very controversial subject.  For your information, here are some undisputed facts:

Mercury is the most neuro-toxic, non-radioactive element on the planet.  It is more neurotoxic than arsenic or lead.
Dental researchers now concede that mercury vapor is released from unstimulated amalgam fillings 24 hours a day.
Chewing, brushing, temperature increases and clenching/grinding have been shown to release mercury vapor.
The FDA and the American Dental Association promote amalgam fillings as standard of care dentistry.  Dentists who place amalgam fillings do so in good faith, believing in the efficacy, safety, cost-effectiveness, and longevity of amalgams.
Sweden, Austria, Denmark, and Norway have all banned amalgam fillings.

metal fillingsSo…  Do mercury fillings affect your health?  STUDIES SUPPORT BOTH SIDES OF THE CONTROVERSY.  You must do your own research and decide what is best for you. When existing amalgam fillings are still functioning, it must be your personal choice to have them replaced with other materials, either for health reasons or if you want your teeth to look better.

Fix What’s Broken

Even if you choose  not to have them removed for health reasons, mercury fillings aren’t a permanent fix for a tooth.  They have an average life-span of 8-12 years.  How long have you had your old fillings? You most likely will need to have them replaced, and you need to know how to keep yourself safe when you do.

I was a “mercury-free” dentist for 14 years.  Now I am a “mercury-safe” dentist.  There is a difference. The greatest exposure to mercury comes when the old filling is drilled out.  Safe procedures can reduce exposure by up to 90%.

What are those procedures?  There are 10 that are generally regarded as the standard to be mercury safe.

1. Keeping it cool–to reduce mercury release,  a lot of water is used to keep the filling cool.

2. Rocks, not pebbles–the filling is cut into large chunks, which reduces the amount of drilling.

3. Get it all out–the vacuum must be very strong and placed as close to the tooth as possible.

4. To breathe or not to breathe–avoid breathing through your mouth during the procedure.

5. Dam it – a rubber dam won’t keep vapors out, but it will keep particles out of your mouth.

6. Clean up, clean up–everything in the area and around the area should be rinsed very well.

7. Big vacuum–a very large vacuum is placed right below the chin.

8. Ions are friends – An ionizer traps any mercury still left in the air.

9. Rinse and spit–after the procedure,  rinse very well, even gargle in the back, and spit.

10. After the fact–removing mercury fillings ,even in a safe way, will always produce a temporary increase in a person’s exposure to mercury.  Make sure all of your routes of elimination are clear and ready to do their job.

total dental careI am now using all of the mercury safe procedures in my office, and things have started to look up for my health.  I don’t know if that was the main source of my health problems or not, but I don’t want to risk becoming a “mad dentist”!   I’m staying safe, and keeping my patients safe from now on!  For more information, look up biological dental information at www.totalcaredental.com.

When I came to your class I had just been diagnosed with rectal cancer

green smoothiestraw berries (1)Our customer support rep Kami forwarded this to me and said, “This brought tears to my eyes.” Me, too.

“I was in so much pain I couldn’t sit. So I kept squirming. I felt that I was distracting those who wanted so much to learn from you. I kept starting to leave…but I selfishly wanted to learn too.

I want to tell you I have now been doing green smoothies for almost two years and am constantly getting other people started. Years of compulsively overeating carbs, sweets, and fats gave me the giant belly you saw that literally hangs to my knees.

What you would never have imagined is that my health was already greatly improved by your green smoothies. I truly believe the cancer was already being driven out by the greens. I believe that if I beat this, it will be because of you. If I had found you sooner I would never have had to go through all this.

hands hearts (1)Thank you for all the good information you made available to me. I am done with radiation and my first round of chemo . I am barely able to eat again. I am starting back on my green smoothies. I wish you could guide me through this but I could never afford you. I wonder how many lives you have saved and they don’t even know it.

Never become discouraged. The world needs you. Be well, dear sister, and never stop.”

Sandra in Canada has a great story of health through plant-based eating!

Dr. Joel Fuhrman
Dr. Joel Furhman

Recently we got this story from Sandra P. in Canada I thought you would enjoy!

My family started our plant-based journey less than a year ago. My husband saw Dr. Joel Fuhrman on the Dr. Oz show, and cut out all animal products, as well as all processed foods and oils from his diet! I was stunned by his declaration and told him that if he thought I was going to cook two separate meals for our family, he was crazy! I mean how could he ask me, with my Italian descent, to cut olive oil from my diet!

Nonetheless, he ignored my drama and began eating only whole plant-based foods (vegetables, legumes, fruits, whole grains, nuts, and seeds) and he started losing weight. That did it for me! There was no way he would lose weight effortlessly and leave me behind with the extra weight I couldn’t get rid of no matter what I tried!

veggiesDon’t get me wrong; this is a lifestyle change that doesn’t happen overnight! It took me a while to completely cut all animal products. My family thought I was insane and my mom tried to force feed me chicken! The hardest thing for me to give up completely was cheese! Now I notice that dairy products give me cramps, hives, and gas.

My children have been off dairy since September. One of my sons, Michael, was diagnosed with asthma as a baby and has been on puffers since then! This is the first season that he hasn’t had a chest infection!

Overall health benefits for all of us: weight-loss, anxiety and depression gone, sleeping better, more energy, and I’m always in a good mood, which is a bonus for the rest of the family, too!

Forks over KnivesYou already know about the amazing Robyn Openshaw, also known as Green Smoothie Girl! She is helping to spread the word about the benefits of plant-based nutrition and has already changed so many lives! Watch Forks Over Knives, and read Dr. Joel Fuhrman, and Dr. Campbell’s The China Study too!

The greatest gift that I gave my family was that of knowledge! They can now take their health into their own hands, and can make our world a better place, one person at a time!

God Bless,

Sandra Perri
