If you get the chance, tell my kids what good nutrition means to you

I won a singles league tennis match at another club a while ago. After the match, I was tanking up on water and talking to my son Tennyson, who came to watch me play. I said,

“Want to go to Good Earth and get some wheat grass juice?”

My opponent was looking at me strangely, so I said, “Yeah. I know. It’s weird. But he LOVES the stuff.”

She said, “I don’t drink wheat grass juice. But I do drink green smoothies. I just read a book called The Green Smoothies Diet.”

Haha, I love my life! I guess my photo isn’t on that book’s jacket.

Then there was the day I was pumping gas in my car and two different women, both named Carrie, came up and gave me a hug.

And recently, someone at the gym told me that Holly Mendenhall, who has attended a few of my classes, turned her onto green smoothies. She said, “Do you know Holly?” (Nope.) She said, “She’s the wife of Bronco Mendenhall.”

BYU’s football coach! (What a great man, who has done great things in this community.) YAY! Does that mean that Bronco Mendenhall’s family is doing 12 Steps to Whole Foods? I can only hope.

That was all awesome, but maybe even better is what happened the night before, at Kincade’s baseball banquet. One of his friends and his mom got out of their car in the parking lot with us. So since Cade was talking to his buddy, I chatted with the mom all the way in to the banquet.

While we listened to the awards ceremony and ate dinner, two women came over to my table to say that green smoothies, or my whole-foods course, have been transforming their energy and health. One said, “I no longer get tired training for my marathon—I love it!”

But best of all, both women turned to my son and said, “I feel so great drinking green smoothies—do you drink them, Cade?”

He said, “Every day of my life. My house is the Vegetable Capital of the World.” No sarcasm….just kinda proud, actually, of his own healthy habits–because what else are you going to do in the face of such ardent enthusiasm?

And they gushed to him with such enthusiasm about how positive their nutrition changes have been. I acted cool, I hope, but secretly was SO THRILLED.

THANK YOU SO MUCH, if you ever have any interaction with my children, and you give them a third-party endorsement of the principles I teach!

Then as I went to leave, the mom I had walked in with came rushing back up to me. She said, “Oh my gosh, you are Robyn? I just figured that out! I just read your book and now I’m studying 12 Steps to Whole Foods with my co-workers and I love it!”

And my son sat there and listened. Three times in one night, and I didn’t even have to pay them. (hehe)

I am always trying to give the parents following a whole-foods path some endorsement with their kids. By writing The Adventures of Junk Food Dude, by doing readings for kids, then writing the recipe book Junk Food Dude’s Yummy Healthy Recipes, by encouraging readers to bring their older kids to my events, by talking to kids whenever I get the chance.

So, WHAT AN AMAZING BLESSING when it comes back to me and someone returns the favor!

I need others to confirm the truth of these principles, for my children, as well.

  1. Robyn, I hope you can help me with this issue. For about two years now, I have suffered from Fordyce spots on my upper lip only. Fordyce spots are usually small white bumps that are basically oil glands without hair follicles therefore they are ectopic and can appear on the lips or in the genital area.

    Now, right around the same time, I started to suffer from acne and I was having severe GI issues. At the present time, I have managed to control my GI issues somewhat with my diet, but I do still experience problems. The doctors have also strongly believed that I have an autoimmune disorder of some kind, but they haven’t been able to find any conclusive labs for any disorder in particular.

    The only concern is cosmetic and doctors says they are natural and there is nothing to treat them with except possibly a laser. I have read a ton of forums on this topic and there is no consensus on a treatment that works. They really bother me though and make my lips extremely dry all the time.

    I’m wondering if you have any knowledge of these spots and what might possibly help treat them. I wish I could know what caused them, if it’s diet-related, health-related, or just that they appear in some people for no particular reason. I’ve tried tea tree oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, vitamin a and c, zinc and most notably a very green diet. Nothing has worked and I thought I would check with you as a last attempt in cause you do have some experience or knowledge.

    Even though I always try to stick with a healthy, whole foods diet, I have done elimination diets for sugar and wheat and I’m a vegan. There was never any improvement during those trials. I always tend to think that these kinds of things are caused by toxins, hormonal imbalances, ph imbalance, etc, and that we can fix them with how we treat our bodies and what we nourish ourselves with, but, in this instance, it seems that’s not the case and it has me feeling defeated. i want that control over my body, but nothing seems to help.

    Thank you for what you are doing! It has LITERALLY changed my life.

    A couple of years ago my Dr. told me that I had symptoms of M.S….I had been really really sick, and I was scared. I also was diagnosed with Bipolar 2 last year which was the hardest thing I’ve ever dealt with in my life. My sweet husband started looking online for natural cures because he was so concerned, he didn’t want to lose me at 40 years old. He came upon a few youtube videos, one being yours. We watched every single one of them, & as we absorbed every bit of info we started to feel hope!

    Soooo….December 26th, 2011 we started this journey and will never look back! The M.S. symptoms went away completely! I had zero energy prior to this change and I am now training for a half marathon in October. I run 6-8 miles 4 days a week! I am still in shock honestly. The best side affect is that we’ve both lost over 40 lbs…I weigh less than I did in H.S. and I am just soooo happy! At the beginning our family and friends mocked us and were pretty skeptical. It’s funny how none of them feel that way any longer. They can see the difference in us and now respect our choices.

    I was at your class last night in Bothel (Seattle area) and you mentioned the Medicine Cabinet Makeover. I NEED IT! I signed up twice (didn’t want to be missed lol) but I am so eager that I wanted to email you as well. More than anything I want to get off the 2 medications I am on for B.P. 2. I want to be medicine free for the rest of my life, and I have been praying, asking God to lead me in that direction. (The oils really interest me, I want to learn more about them!) I’m hoping the Makeover is the direction that I need. I would love to know when it is going to be in the Seattle area, or even Oregon. I will travel if needed.

    I started a blog for my family, friends & acquaintances (I was a Real Estate agent in my area and I know a lot of people) because I wanted to share my story. I know that I’m not the only one that has struggled…plus I didn’t want people talking about me and what I am doing without the facts. The bipolar thing is a pretty interesting point of discussion for people…this way if I have it all out there, then maybe people will be educated as I am becoming educated.

    My sister in law told me yesterday that she thinks I should go back to school for nutrition because I am helping so many people with my excitement and love for my new lifestyle. I’m just praying again for the Lord’s guidance, I know His timing is best and I know He will lead me. He has been so faithful!

    In the meantime, I will help anyone and everyone I can with the little knowledge I have! I am answering so many questions on my Facebook all the time from people that want to know how my life has changed.

    Thank you for following what God has laid out for you to do, He has used you to change my life. My life will NEVER be the same! I just love you! 🙂

    It is for sure the best way to have other people say to our kids what we teach them daily. My son (who is four now) really loves eating fruits and veggies, but another day he came home and pointing to the fruits said “the teacher said fruits are healthy” – good! One more reason so he keeps eating fruits instead of cookies and sweetened corn flakes.
    I came across your site just a couple of months ago and I’m having the Green Smoothies daily since them. I noticed a lot of energy gain, no more sleepy afternoons and I already lost 6.6 lb
    Since I gave birth I’ve been fighting my weight and always loosing (gaining pounds instead of loosing them), so thanks to your smoothies I’m beggining to win the battle.

    Also, I have a question to ask:
    You don’t use much pecans on your recipes and I’d like to know if there is any specific reason as almonds are the main used. I used to have a pecan tree (I moved, the tree is still there – I hope) and now I still have like 2 gallons of pecans with shells. So I’m wondering if I can sprout them as almonds and use pecans in any recipe I see the almonds (pecan milk I wonder?)

    Anyway, thanks for all info on your GS website and books (I have GS diet, 12 steps and 8 week menu planner) and really thankful for e-books as I live in Brazil and you don’t ship here.

  4. I just sent an email to the team mom of the football team. I hope she is not offended but I tried to encourage us as parents to be more healthy in their choices for treats and half time snacks. This part of sports drives me crazy. I pay my kids money if they trade in their “toxic” treats and they can have our homemade treats when they get home which actually re-fill their little bodies with some great foods and helps them replace the electrolytes they just lost instead of filling their body with soda after the game. I love that you teach your kids and expect them to eat and drink the food you make for them. I do the same and use your example to keep me going. I hope that more parents will be brave enough to help make the change that we have gotten used too. Thanks for your great example!

    I was wondering if you have any plans to offer another promotion on ionizers? I recently moved back home to beautiful Homer, Alaska and am missing the alkaline water that was available to us in CA. I’ve been a follower of yours for over a year and have benefited greatly from your Green Smoothies and Sun Warrior Protein powder.
