Dear GreenSmoothieGirl,

Dear GreenSmoothieGirl,

My thank you is long past-due.  I came to your class at the Herb Shop in Orem back in May of 2010.  I was hoping to find a way to help my two-year-old son eat vegetables, smoothy-style, but, I didn’t at all bargain for how I would change.

At first, I was wary.  What you said about meat, dairy, sugar, etc. was so drastically different from the habits I’d been taught…and I thought I was a healthy person.  There was so much I’d taken for granted with what I put into my body.  I knew foods that came from the ground were good for you, I just didn’t have any idea what a difference basing your diet around them could make.

A few months after starting green smoothies and jumping into any of the 12 steps I could, all at once, I felt empowered.  For the first time as a mother, I knew how to nourish my children.

That said, swimming against our food culture’s “current,” learning how to buy and prepare food again, dealing with food addictions– especially sugar, has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.  At times, it’s been almost overwhelmingly discouraging.  But, I keep with it because, it’s worth it.

The best physical representation I have of that is my ten-month-old daughter.  Struggling with depression since I became a mother, I was done having children after three.  Now I am the happy mother of four– to me, our new baby daughter feels like the direct result of my transformation from living the whole-foods diet you taught me.  Thank you, thank you.

I can’t say enough good about the 12 Steps to Whole Foods.  Your course is so well-thought out and organized to help people be successful in improving their diet– one step at a time, in perfect order.  I’m so grateful that you are willing to speak out and risk yourself for us.  I’m so grateful for how you’ve shared your knowledge, your life, your successes and things you’ve learned along the way.  Thank you for being a grounded, voice of moderation in the health food world that I trust.

Attached is a picture of the most delicious thing in our life right now. Yum!

  1. HI, Robyn – Just checking in to say Hi. I never comment anymore, but am as rapt a reader as ever – especially liked the Women/Hormone series. But wanted to tell you that the GS life is chugging on, and some cool things are happening. My whole wing of the building is ‘getting it’ and asking all kinds of questions, and actually listening and following my input. The mother who was reluctant to get her daughter a blender has done it and says it’s been a good thing. About once every couple of weeks someone asks me for my ‘recipe’, which is actually a small tutorial – not only lists the ingredients, but the reason why each one is in there. My husband came home from a business lunch the other day and said how he was amazed to find himself talking nutrition with his associates, and cluing them in on why soy milk isn’t so great, and they might want to switch to rice drink in their morning smoothies. He felt like an ‘intern’ practicing what he had learned from me, and to a great degree, what I had learned from you. I did finally try a beet. Afraid to say I threw the whole thing out after one sip. BUT, I did try something new – there’s value in that, if more on a personal growth level than a nutrition one. And I check constantly to see when you are going to be anywhere near in the area again. Last time I drove two blocks to see you. If I have too, the next time I will drive two hours. You are a constant good influence in my life, and I do mean it when i say I count you as a sister on this journey. Keep it up – I’m still reading…

    1. MGM, love you, my friend. I’ll be in Riverside or somewhere near that around Dec. 1? 🙂 Good stuff, keep doin’ the deal!

  2. I echo Rachel’s comments… while I haven’t had the opportunity to attend a class or have yet plunged into the 12 steps program I have been following along with your site whenever I can. recently I came upon the Vitamix site and their forum and even though I had been doing smoothies occasionally, I embarked on a 30-day smoothie challenge with them; my occasional smoothie became a habit and I have felt much better for it and now have my green smoothie daily. I have had a lot of health issues over the past 8 years mostly due to the stress of looking after an ailing husband. Since he has been admitted to a nursing home I have been able to begin looking after myself finally, and with my daily smoothie I can see a gradual return to health. Some issues have completely resolved; others are waning. And I feel GREAT, for the first time in years!!! Every day I see residents of his nursing home suffering with the effects of diabetes, obesity, and a host of other issues, a lot of which could have been prevented with a healthy diet. I was one of the lucky ones–my mother grew a garden and we had fresh veggies daily; my children likewise were taught the benefits of having their veggies, and they in turn are showing their own children–my grandchildren– how to eat properly. It boggles my mind that some people never learn what proper eating looks like.

  3. I accidentally deleted my last gr smoothe girl e-mail from you where you showed and demonstrated the new blender that you recommend highly. Please sent it again to me, as I would like to purchase it.
