update: how did GreenSmoothieGirl juice bars do?
As you know, on about Oct. 6, the first two GreenSmoothieGirl bars opened in the Roxberry franchises in Highland and American Fork, Utah.
77 of y’all came in with the coupons I handed out. In that first 4 weeks, 370 green smoothies were served, and the owners, the Jackmans, are pumped. They said raw foodists are coming into the store, parents are bringing even small children in, and people regularly tell them thank you for the new opportunity to eat tons of leafy greens the easy way.
I was out running errands just today and met a lady named Kristy was ecstatic that she got her first-ever GS at Roxberry and her 6-year old daughter loved it, so she’s now making them at home too.
(You have so many options, like adding fresh orange juice to it, or sprouted-whole-food protein powder. You can tell them what greens you want, or just kick back and let them make a GreenSmoothieGirl Classic, my everyday recipe.)
Roxberry owner Holly came over today for some Green Smoothies Diet books. (Get it there and avoid paying shipping here on GSG.com–wow, did I really just say that??)
Holly said she and Mark were working the store a few days ago when a customer left with her green drink and said, “Tell your boss thanks so much–I love it!” We laughed our heads off about that. (I am not Mark and Holly’s boss, FYI.) I was just saying to one of my girlfriends the other day, “Sometimes I wish I had a boss! I miss handing off the problems to somebody else!”
Anyway, this week, you can mention the GreenSmoothieGirl blog and get $1 off ANY smoothie, Highland and American Fork only. It’s cold weather, so we don’t think about cold foods. But your body needs those 15 servings of greens and fruit even more in the wintertime than in the summer.
And….now that we know green smoothie bars within another storefront business can be successful, please send your local health food store owner, or juice bar, to us. Tell them we can bring more traffic in their store and help them easily provide another product that promotes excellent health. They should write us at support123@greensmoothiegirl.com.
Hi Robyn,
I am interested in buying some coconut oil. There is a co-op going on in my town which sells cocount oil. However, I want to make sure I’m buying the best brand. I noticed that you sell Mountain Rose. The brand that this other co-op is selling is: Tropical Traditions (comes from the Philippines).
You’ve mentioned a lot about the nutritional benefits of coconut oil. But, are all coconut oils created equal? Are there certain companies we should stick with or avoid?
I mainly want to use it for baking. So should I save my money and not buy the Extra Virgin or Gold Label (from Tropical Traditions). and buy the less expensive non virgin kinds?
This is my first time buying and using cocount oil and I want to make sure I’m getting the right product.
Thanks for your help and all you do!!! I am LOVING your books and green smoothies. You’re amazing.
Hi Koni, thanks very much.
We are doing a coconut oil that I love that we get through GloryBee in our current group buy (we do it once a year). I also love the Mountain Rose (I don’t sell it–I provide a link though). And Tropical Traditions is a great brand too. I don’t know all of them. I have coconut oil from GloryBee that I’ve had for 3 years in my cold storage that is still fresh and wonderful. You just want a company that is certified organic and uses cold-pressing in its processing.
Hi Robyn, I know you eat alfalfa sprouts. Have you studied anything about the toxin canavanine in them? We eat the sprouts (home grown) and came across this web site: http://www.foodrevolution.org/askjohn/17.htm
Thank you for you knowledge. Ketena
Ketena, years ago I studied to the very bottom of the canavanine issue and decided that it was a complete non-issue. That isn’t exactly a referenced, complete answer, because it was before I began writing books and before I kept notes on things like that. But I fed them to my family every day for about 10 years with no problems. I think it’s one of those issues where people who are very fearful about food spread one little seed somebody planted, far and wide, and thus propogated a lot of fear about a simple food that is good for us. (Very easy to do, on the internet.) I use the sprouts at about 1/4″ to 1/2″ long.
I have been doing green smoothies for 3 days now just a pint in the morning and a pint for supper and maybe one during the day. Im just getting the hang of making them and I always make way to much so have to freeze the rest of what I dont drink. I hope freezing them is ok?
Anyway what I wanted to ask was that I want to do a green smoothie fast I guess you could say, but I get soooo hungry with just the 1 pint for breakfast and then supper which I usually have something to eat with those too. I would like to do 32 oz for breakfast and 32 oz for supper and maybe some raw veggies for lunch. Does this sound possible? Im not used to not actually eating something and also want to know if the habit of wanting to I guess chew something lol will pass? That sounds werid.
Anyway thanks for any advice!
Christy, a pint has only about 100 calories! Thus your being hungry. Yes, you’d want to do a lot more to satisfy your hunger. And if you want something to chew–eat something! Have a Lara Bar, or some almonds, now and then. (When I do a green smoothie cleanse, I still sometimes have a little of something just to satisfy that human need to EAT.)
And yes, freezing works. I do the same thing when I have more than I need. I address all this in The Green Smoothies Diet.
HI Robyn,
I have been searching the internet all morning trying to find the perfect smoothie cups.
My husband and I want a cup that holds one quart of smoothie
But my kids need smaller cups, with lids, and thick straws.
I would prefer cups that can be used for “on the go”.
I’m sure I’m not the first one looking for these type of cups. I would love help from anyone!!
Koni
Koni, I am looking too. I would like to private label them with Green Smoothie Girl on them. I am thinking about Blender Bottle, but it holds only 28 oz. Let me know if you find the perfect thing. Meantime, use a quart jar and a pint jar for you and the kids.
I know this is funny but it might lead you in some good directions. I have a cup from the Hogle Zoo that holds BARELY a quart. It has a lid and a straw. It’s perfect for me……………………………..
Hi Robyn,
Just FYI… Our Costco in St. George is selling fantastic smoothie cups for kids and teenagers (they only hold 2 cups). They are made of a strong clear plastic and they have a screw on lid along with a thick straw.
My 3 little kids (ages 5 and under) now drink their green smoothies every morning from these Costco cups.
The cups come in a set of 3. They also come with 2-3 additional straws.
Now, if I could find the same thing for me and my husband (only now I need cups that hold 3-4 cups)
This past week when each of my kids finishes their smoothie, I do the “smoothie dance” for each one of them. It has turned our mornings into a bit of a game and the kids think it’s so fun. I feel SO excited each time one of the kids finishes their drink.
Thanks again!!
Koni
Hi Robyn,
One more thing…
Tonight was my husband’s birthday. I made your beet chocolate cake. We loved it!!
In replace of the oil, I used bean puree. Have you ever tried that? I use pureed beans in tons of things that call for oil. In all my cookies, cakes, pancakes, waffles, etc. It totally works. There is no bean taste whatsoever!
I use white beans. I cook them from scratch, puree the whole batch, then freeze them in 1 C. containers. I have about 15-20 of them frozen in my freezer. Then, whenever a recipe calls for oil (baked goods mainly), I substitute equal amounts of bean puree. My friend just used the bean puree in her granola and it worked great.
Anyway, I have a whole handout on how to do this, as well as recipes if you’re interested. (it’s great for food storage purposes too!!)
Take Care,
Koni
Koni, I’d love to have it. Please send to support123@greensmoothiegirl.com.
We use bean flour in some 12 Steps recipes. I have a tip from a reader about that, which I’ll post soon, with this–thanks!
