I love my compost pile: CAUGHT ON VIDEO

I like gardening, but I love composting. It’s a no-brainer. It’s one of those “life is an eternal round” things. Maybe I’m weird and the Depression-era mentality lasted three generations, in me. But I love “waste not, want not” and I hate the throw-away generation and attitude. Turn your food into food for your food. Does anybody love plant garbage like I do?

  1. My compost pile has turned into an ant pile! Everytime I go to turn it or work with it I get covered in ants. In fact, my whole garden has become infested with ants. Any ideas? Help!

  2. I love to compost too! I’m glad to know that I’m not wierd. I just have one big bin that I put everything into. But I like your idea of three bins.

  3. Hey Jane, I have the same ant problem. Since most of my summer garden is gone, purslane has taken over. I am glad to use it for smoothies, however, it seems to be attracting them. I still have beets and radishes and butter lettuce but I’m worried the ants will destroy everything. If anyone has any ideas about how to get rid of them without chemicals it would be much appreciated.

  4. Jane, O.K. I decided if a real gardener didn’t reply, I would tell you what was in the New York Times under the “Spotlight on the Home” series. I have not tried it and am not sure if ants are included in this, but it is recommended to “Place a few slices of cucumber in a small pie tin. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans, but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.”

    1. Hi Jane, I have lots of pest-control ideas in Ch. 5 of 12 Steps. However, I don’t know which ones will work for ants–I haven’t had that specific problem!
