I buy broccoli and alfalfa sprouts. Broccoli can be a bit spicy, so I only add a little bit. It took me a few months to get used to the flavor of sprouts.
SMALL seeds. I do a lot of alfalfa seeds. Clover is mild too. Pea sprouts are easy and has a pleasant flavor. Radish and broccoli are gonna have a kick. All wonderful additions to a smoothie.
I’d say broccoli – I believe they are better for you vs legume sprouts (like alfalfa) and they don’t have a strong taste in drinks.
Thank you so much for your help!
sunflower sprouts can give it a nutty sunflowerish flavor if you like that.
I couldn’t find a way to send in my own question to the blog, but even though this is kind off topic, (please forgive me), I would really appreciate some help. My mother and I are vegans already, and just last week we saw, and got hooked on, the greensmoothiegirl videos. We are so interested that we bought the Green Smoothies Diet book. Today, we tried two different recipes from the book and we did not enjoy the taste of either recipe. We tried the “Mango Meltaway”, and the “Beet Blast”. Trying and not liking this really discouraged us, but we really want to stick to the program. With me being a type-one diabetic, (with no cure), and her being very close to becoming a type-two diabetic, we really have some weight to lose and were hoping to see some more health benefits as well. I was hoping that maybe one of you could recommend a recipe for us to try, because we aren’t ready to give up yet.
If you have any great recipes to share, please email me at leslie_flare_west@yahoo .com
Thank you and I would really appreciate it.
Leslie, any recipe you don’t like is likely because you’re unaccustomed to raw greens/vegs and overly acclimated to sugar/highly sweetened foods? Try not eating sugar for several days and see how green smoothie recipes taste to you. Also, add extra water and a bit of stevia to any of the recipes. Don’t give up—you can always find a blend that works for you! And then, when you adjust, branch out for more variety!
Thank you for the quick reply and the advice, my mother and I are both very excited to learn this new lifestyle. It seems that we love change. We became vegans a year ago, and we learned the hard way that anyone can gain weight even when they think they have gone to a healthier lifestyle. I personally have always been interested with my own health since a very fearful expierience of discovering that I am a type one diabetic with a night in the ICU, and three life changing days in a hospital with a blood sugar rate of 1053, (past the point of very high risk of stroke or coma). In a way, health and nutrition feels like a calling to me, and living the healthiest lifestyle possible has become a personal goal of mine. It shocks me how much people my age (15) don’t care about their own health or their future wellbeing. I am most definitely looking forward to getting the full twelve step program when we have the money and time to order it.
