Could use some advice…
I have been on my journey since July 27. At that time I started eating a raw food diet. I did this for about 5 weeks. I lost about 17 lbs. Then, I discovered greensmoothiegirl.com. I got the 12 Steps book and started living by this. I work out between 3-5 days a week for 45 minutes to an hour each time.
In the last 5 weeks, I have only lost 3 more lbs and have gone back up a few pounds here and there. To date I have lost 20 lbs in 10 weeks.
I know that this sounds like a good number, but I have been working so hard and eating so well that I just thought it would go faster. The first 5 weeks I lost 17 lbs and in the second 5 weeks I have only lost 3. Yes, the bigger picture of 20 lbs in 10 weeks looks good, but 3 lbs in 5 weeks is not good.
I would love some input!
With the exercise, I eat really well and drink lots of water. I drink a green smoothie nearly everyday. I am vegan with the exception of a cup of kefir nearly everyday. I eat a salad with ever dinner. What could I possibly be doing wrong??? I am tired of being stuck! I haven’t lost any weight in the last 3 weeks. I still have about 25 lbs to lose.
Thanks all!
Kari
Try not to fall into that trap of being obsessed with changing your lifestyle just to lose weight. Obviously it is going to happen (as it already has!). It is best to focus on “getting healthy” and that is more than just weight. It’s how you feel inside. While eating this way your body will be detoxing and that might not feel too good for a while but then afterward, it will be very different. I don’t react the same to the old food I used to grow up eating. Also, realize that cortisol is what holds onto your fat and that is caused by stress! So try not to stress and just know that if you keep it up, you will reap the rewards!
Kari, sometimes our bodies hold onto weight as a defense mechanism against a time when they can’t get the necessary calories for the amount of “work” being done. Does this make sense? I don’t know if I’m explaining it very well, but I don’t think you need to worry so much because, as you said, 20 # in 10 weeks is very good. If you lose too fast, you will never keep it off because your body will crave and demand adequate nutrients.
Let your body level off for a while and try not to “gain” any back. I weigh every day and if I am one pound over my desired weight, I eat a little more sparsely just for that day.
I know it’s hard to be patient when we want to achieve something we have in mind, but our bodies can lead us if we let them. I think perhaps your body is telling you that it doesn’t want any more weight loss for now. I’m certainly not an expert, and these are just my own ideas, so I don’t know if this is any help, but I wish you sucess and happiness. For right now be content with the 20-pound loss. I think it’s great. Have a wonderful day.
I had a similar experience when I started green smoothies almost two years ago. I lost weight like crazy for about 2 months. Then, when I really concentrated on other steps of the 12-step program, my weight loss really tapered off. Like you, I was frustrated. And like you, I don’t really know why it happened. But . . . the weight eventually started coming off again. In all, I dropped 60 lbs and felt great. So just keep going!!! You’re doing great!!! Definitely don’t give up on the smoothies or the other steps. They are the key to vitality and health.
A woman (GSG reader for 2 yrs.) at my class in Midway, Utah today has lost 80 lbs. in the last year doing green smoothies. Weight loss wasn’t the goal, just a side benefit. I think it’s a long-term thing when we have more than a few lbs. to lose, and we have to always look at the forest instead of the trees. When it’s about getting healthy, the weight is eventually lost without the feelings of deprivation and frustration.
Without a detailed, close analysis of diet and other factors, it’s hard to make really specific recommendations.
Kari-
I started my journey just a few weeks before you and have had a similar pattern with the weight loss. However, I am certain that good things are still happening beyond the weight loss based on my body’s reactions to unhealthy foods now, so I can only suppose that I am physically going through a regenerative period where everything is being held onto for restoring and restructuring inside. In my reading about cleansing, I have learned that it can take several months after the initial detox burst for the deep cleansing to take place, and that the weight loss can sometimes be “on hold” during that time. I believe that in my case. Or, maybe it’s that handful of dark chocolate chips I still have every evening. =)
Thank you, everyone who responded! I am probably stuck for the reasons you all suggested, restoring and restructuring.
It’s frustrating, but if that’s the reason I would sure rather have that any day! I have lost a lot of weight before on a 100% raw diet only to have it come back with a vengence after I couldn’t stick with it. This whole foods diet is easy for me to live by. I would prefer a raw food diet since I know how I felt while on it, but it is nearly impossible to stick to indefinately.
So the other day I was talking to my husband about my frustration in my weight loss stopping. He got a calorie counter book and started figuring up how many calories I eat a day. I stick to the 12 Steps program pretty carefully (only splurging occasionally), but a day’s worth of calories were higher than my supposed calorie limit for weight loss. Should I be counting calories?
Maybe I am not fitting everything in properly. I have the 12 steps. I do live by them, but maybe I don’t eat the right mixture. Maybe I eat too much. What should my meals look like? I was shocked to see that a typical green smoothie is well over 400 calories.
I know this way of eating is a process and losing weight is just a side-benefit. I just want to make sure I am doing everything the way I should in order to reap the highest benefits, weightloss and great health.
Thanks!
Kari
My “last supper” was a meal of pizza topped with meats and hot chicken wings. I felt terrible and sick that night and the next day. That’s when I said enough is enough. I went vegetarian January 1st of this year. My intention is to progress to vegan, then raw vegan. It’s been difficult because my husband insisted on having meat at every meal. I do not cook it nor touch it. He eats it away from the house or when we go to restaurants. But he’s been eating more vegetarian meals and often asks me to make salad for dinners. Hallelujah!
I lost 15 lbs probably within the first few months. I have maintained that weight loss, but I was at a plateau for several months. I have every confidence it will whittle away when my body is ready. My body probably needed to use its store of fat to maintain my weight loss and allow my organs and other bodily functions to acclimate to the changes in my diet. I have been incorporating green smoothies into my diet again. The result is that I am already beginning to lose about one pound a week.
Let your body “do its thing”. It knows its stuff. When it adjusts, you will reap the rewards of patience and persistence and constancy.
Hi Kari,
First, I want to praise you for your commitment to whole foods lifestyle and for your weight loss! I know personally how frustrating it can be. I too decided to pursue a vegan lifestyle. I consume about 40 ounces of GS a day and have a cooked vegan meal at dinner with my non-vegan family. I have lost 20 lbs. since August and have begun to hit a plateau as well. I have decided not to freak out. I have lost weight before and understand that it comes off quickly at first. Kari, I want to encourage you to focus on how you feel. Perhaps change your workouts or even try new raw/vegan cooking. If I focus on weight loss I lose my joy. I must say that I have not lost another pound for two weeks, however, I have lost another inch and I am becoming stronger. I have decided to instead focus on living this way for a lifetime. Today I made a gorgeous Minestrone soup and roasted some veggies…I will serve this with a couple of chicken sausages for my non-vegan family….Although, they are quickly becoming increasingly happy to eat vegan. My son and daughter ( 17 and 21) both love GS’s I make two large batches everyday! My GS’s on the bottom fridge and theirs on top! My hubby is not a fan of the GS and thats okay. He loves vegan soups and salads. He runs and lifts weights with me, and has dropped weight as well. Hang in there. Make it work for you. Take your time. Live with the new lifestyle…not against it.
Ladies, I have been struggling with weightloss for the past three years and have a vegan diet that is 90% raw and race bicycles. I gained weight on green smoothies though still have them in half servings every day. I found out a couple of weeks ago though that I have Liver Flukes that are likely causing my chronic anemia and resulting in malabsorption of what I need and inability to digest the things I am putting into my body for it to use. I was flabergasted! Since starting my initial natural cleansing I am loosing about 4-5 pounds a week and feel marvelous!!!! It may not be a problem for many, but since learning that about 70% of all Americans have parisites of one form or another, I cannot help but wonder… how long have I really been affected by these buggers!
