What Else Do I Eat?
I am new to the green smoothies. I am drinking about 20 oz. for breakfast. What are some lunch/dinner ideas to help me stay healthy and lose weight?

Big Salad for lunch
Hearty Soup for Dinner
I have been having a green smoothie for breakfast and dinner, and for lunch making a huge salad—with lots of extra stuff like baked tofu and maybe a little local goat cheese, avocado, sprouts, and quinoa. I have been losing weight, slowly and steadily and feel great. I make my dressing from scratch, it is easy and quick.
In the blender:
extra virgin olive oil(up to 8 oz line)
balsamic vinegar(up to 16 oz. line)
1/2 large onion
fresh ginger, as much as you can stand
shake in some herbs of your choosing and pepper (or cayenne, yum!)
1/2 cup nutritional yeast (or more to make it thicker)
then whiz it all up, pour into glass bottle and store in fridge.

I have a recipe collection on the site called 101 Quick, Healthy Lunch ideas on the site, as that was one of the most-often-asked questions I got. I also have 30 plant-based, hearty main dish recipes in Ch. 6 of 12 Steps to Whole Foods.

If you stick to raw foods ,avoid dairy, you will naturally lose weight. What you’re doing is reducing calories by taking out fat and refined sugars but eating as much volume as needed.

Robyn, I’ve been surfing you website and blog and saw an article about a woman trying to lose 100 pounds with your system. I got interupted and now I can’t find it, even with your search mode. Can you please direct me to it. I have about 15 pounds to lose, but my husband has 100 pounds. We have a similar story to yours: my husband grew up on a dairy farm and I grew up with a mom that mom “surprise vegtable stew” every night. My husband is willing to try and I want to help him, and I’m sure myself (I’ve hit 40 and weird hormones/weight gain are happening). Thanks for your help, I’ll be buying your program in the next week or so.
Missy, I’d love to tell you, but, disappointingly, she seems to have disappeared from the internet!
She quit after 5 months and 100+ lbs. lost, but was still over 400 lbs. at that time.
I hope she’s okay. If anyone has any tips on where to find that blogger, let us know!
I have a question. I loved green smoothies at first, and drank them everyday, but after about three weeks, I had to force myself to drink them. I took a break, and now every time I make one, it is really hard for me to get it down. It tastes fine, so I don’t know what is up.
I also have gas every time I drink one.
I want to continue eating so many greens, but I don’t want it to be an unpleasant experience either.
Any ideas or help?
Thanks!
Erin: It sounds to me like your body is telling you it doesn’t want them, for some reason. If it were me, I might switch to green vegetable juices for a while, with maybe a separate fruit smoothie later.
Or, if you’re systematic, you can probably figure out what the issue is. Here are some things to think about:
Are you rotating your greens? How often? If your body has enough of a food, it can send subtle clues (taste change, nausea, etc.) Several ‘gurus’ talk about the possibility of buildup of alkaloids from using the same green too much.
If you always use the same fruit, maybe change that up as well. Or, have you recently added a new type of fruit? We had a bag of frozen tropical fruit and it wasn’t agreeing with my wife in smoothies. The only fruit in there we aren’t used to is papaya, so I started picking those out and she had no more issues.
Are you using any vegetables other than greens? If so, try simplifying. Victoria Boutenko also says to avoid cabbage, because it is starchy and doesn’ t combine well with fruit. I’m not sure believe that, since she uses kale, and isn’t that also starchy? Plus, I’m not strict about food combining, but it’s worth looking at if you’re having trouble.
Are you chewing or swishing each swallow in your mouth to mix it with saliva?
Have you recently started adding fat to them? About 3 days after I started adding whole flax or using almond milk instead of water, I found that I would only want about 2 1/2 cups instead of 4.
When do you have your smoothie? Try having it in the morning, have only water beforehand (at least 30 mins before), and make sure you are actually hungry before you drink the smoothie.
Jason, I found V. Boutenko’s claim that because Sergei had a funny look in his eye, she decided he had “alkaloid poisoning” from too much of the same greens, rather dubious scientifically. I was pretty amazed, in fact, that she actually put that in her book. Do you know of any EVIDENCE of this claim?
I agree with the idea of putting a healthy fat like flax, flax oil, coconut oil, or avocado in your GS if you feel nauseous.
Also eat other things and have the GS be secondary in the meal, as your body acclimates.
Spread it out over 2-3 meals/snacks throughout the day.
Usually this issue is temporary.
I was wondering if you made your own hummus. I make mine and I put onions, garlic, and parsley in it and was thinking I’d try some dulse powder or spiralina? Maybe I’ll just try it in a little. I did make a green smoothie for breakfast and my daughter was too full to eat her oatmeal. She wasn’t crazy about it but she’s not picky and I think it’ll get easier.
I have a couple of hummus recipes in 12 Steps to Whole Foods. (One uses sprouted garbanzo beans.)
What do you all think about raw milk? We drink raw organic milk and make homeade yogurt from. I don’t do kefir really just cause there is only so much you can do..although we are all for it. We grind out own wheat and I cook and bake from scratch so seriously, the time gets limited! I figure yogurt is good too. I know it is heated where as kefir is raw.
The properties in pasteurized vs raw mil are SOOOO unbelievable different. http://www.realmilk.com has great information and highly recommend people read works by Dr. Weston Price. Nutrition and Physical degeneration is extremely interesting.
Just wondering since i Know so many are vegetarians/vegans on this site. we are not but we are limiting are meat intake and we only eat organic/grass fed, pastured animals.
Missyvon5…… I was just looking up that lady that I think you might be talking about…… is it “the green smoothie experiement” lady? She did lose a lot of weight. If this is the one your talking about I just googled it.
Hope this helps
I was so excited about drinking green smoothies. However, my body wasn’t. I was drinking a 32 oz green smoothie daily and added 1 tbsp of Omega 3 oil to it. I noticed that I became constipated from drinking the smoothies. I also noticed that while drinking the smoothie, I would get a scratchy feeling in the back of my throat and I did my best to blend the greens smoothly. I want to go back to drinking them. Does anyone have any suggestions to relieve the constipation and scratchy throat side effects?
India, the constipation is likely a very short-term issue as your body adjusts. Please increase your water intake and see what happens? As for the scratchy throat, that sounds like a food sensitivity, so you might want to consider each ingredient in your green drink, through an elimination program to see what you are allergic to.
I have the same experience of scratchy throat when i injest coconut oil, or msp oil, derived from coconut oil. Is there a way to get over this?
I was looking for this article, keep it up.
