Intestinal Distress!
Please help with advise. I love green smoothies but they are not agreeing with my intestines. I have painful, very painful, gas and bloating about 2 hours after drinking one, and lasts until the next morning. I’ve made them for about a week now and I’m no stranger to greens. I love all dark greens, even the bitter ones and usually make a huge salad every day. But blending them into a smoothy has changed everything. I don’t want to give this up! What’s going on with my body and what should I do? Also, does anyone out there get a sore throat after eating chard?
That happened to me the first couple of weeks–that and constipation. UUgghhh! I started drinking more water and found that was the problem. I added an enormous amount of food to my diet and didn’t consider the need for additional fluids. I thought the smoothie contained fluid enough to ofset everything. Not so. Since adding the additional water, everything evened out. ( I used to drink about 64 oz. water a day. I upped it to 96 oz.)
By the way, I’m feeling pretty great. My symptoms of adrenal failure are vanishing. Hurray!
There are a few things that you need to address.
Food combining
Quantity
Digestive Enzymes
Allergic reaction (sore throat)
Time for a colonic – body could be on overload – releasing and cleansing
Are you eating whole foods before and/or after smoothie or drinking beverages
Does this happen with all green smoothies?
When I eat chard leaves straight out of the garden, they are harsh on my throat, as well. But, I have no problem with them in a salad or smoothie.
What are you putting into your green smoothies? If it’s more than just fruit and leafy greens, cut all the extra stuff out (e.g. flax, hemp, yogurt, oils, avocado, other vegetables, or melons). If that helps, add some of the stuff back in–one at a time–to see how you tolerate it.
Also, try drinking it without any other solid foods. I know for me, green smoothie less than 30 minutes before a meal with cheese or eggs can upset my stomach.
Agree with the previous poster that you should carefully review your ingredients and leave them out one at a time to check for food allergies to particular items. Once I cut out soy milk and substituted rice milk, I had no bloating problems ever again!! I thought my problem for over one year was due to the greens and it was the milk! Good luck! Duran
Definitely get a colonic.. that will benefit greatly. The smoothies are helping to cleanse your cells… and dumping toxins into the colon faster than it can release them. Getting a colonic will help your body powerwash out the poisons…so it can get back to its job of healing you.
Colonics also help to release all those gasses that collect that cannot get out on their own. Go to it girlfriend.. you’re doing great.. whether or not you realize it.
Swiss Chard and Spinach contain oxalic acid. This acid can interfere with calcium absorption if it is juiced and taken in larger amounts.
Eaten raw, this may be the cause of the “burning” in your throat.
I trained with Dr. Bernard Jensen in Iridology, and he cautioned eating too much oxalic acid foods. Balance is always the key.
Oxalic acid can “stir up the acids” and create disturbing results in the joints. So be sure to use other food sources for your calcium needs.
Hope this helps.

I’ll add my encouragement to Chris’s above. Colonics are super important especially if you are new to having a lot of raw smoothies in your diet. I find people generally resist getting them done as they are too “icked” out by it or just do not make the connection about how it can really help. What might help get you to a colon hydrotherapist is the fact that if your colon is not clean, the job of nutrient absorbtion for transport to our cells (the whole reason we’re doing the green smoothies) is not being done very well. Cramping in your lower abdomen and gas that exits from the, er, lower portion of the body is definite indication of the need for a colon cleanse. The same happening in your tummy plus belching would indicate food combination problems. So as others here mentioned, don’t consume green smoothies too close to your regular meals and look at your food combining. Good luck and don’t get discouraged. I think once you try some of these sugeestions, you will find that things work itself out.
I know this is an older post, so I hope you’ve figured out what your issue is. I happened across a post today on Victoria Boutenko’s forum addressing this topic, so I thought I’d pass it along.
