Two Questions
Hi Robyn and others,
I have two questions . . . well I have a whole lot of questions but I will narrow it down to two for now!
1. What are your recommendations for antiperspirant or deodorant? I am a nursing mother so I want to be extra careful of what I put on me but I also want to smell good.
2. My small health food store sells almonds that have been quickly steam pasteurized. They said the almonds will still sprout. When I try to sprout them, they swell and the smaller end starts protruding but I can’t them to do more then that. Do these sounds like they are truely raw?
I wipe my underarms with rubbing alcohol and avoid sugar. If I eat a bunch of sweet things, then I will stink more. I don’t eat processed food unless it is served to me at someone’s house. Otherwise, I find that rubbing alcohol usually last a full day. I haven’t worn deoderant for 3 months.
I think there’s really no way to know if almonds are truly raw, at least not an easy way. I’ve searched on gardening and arborist websites, and almond trees are rarely grown from seed. Apparently the conditions required to get them to actually grow a shoot are extremely specific. For example, I’ve heard of someone getting almonds to grow shoots by soaking them and planting them in soil left on a warm stove for a week – not something you want to go through every time you buy almonds from the store!
2. No, these almonds are not raw, because raw almonds are illegal. There are a few websites that let you buy real raw almonds straight from the farm, but at all health foods stores, they’re pasteurized even if they’re advertised as “raw”.
Sorry.
I have struggled for years trying to find a natural deodorant that kept me from sweating and stinking. I tried all those in the health food store and liked none of them. I also tried the rubbing alcohol, but always after an hour or two it would fail me. Then last month I discovered the absolute, very best thing you can use for deodorant is extra virgin coconut oil. Yes, that’s right, coconut oil. Just rub it under your arms after showering and you’ll be amazed that you stay dry and sweet all day long and even into the next day. Try it! You’ll be pleasantly surprised as I was. Actually, I rub it all over my body to retain moisture after I shower. My face looks younger and more supple. Hey, this sounds an awful lot like a commercial. LOL. Anyway, try it and let us know what you think.

I use the salt stick for deodorant for years no with no problems!
I personally love the crystal sticks you buy at the health food store, work great for me.
Steam pasteurized is NOT raw and they won’t sprout.
so is it safe to say then i should not bother spending more $ on for ‘raw’ almonds, just go ahead and buy roasted almonds?
Robyn,
What do you use and if you do use the actual raw, where do you buy it. It is not easy to find. I have read that the steam pasteurization is only for a few seconds to less than a minute and will not totally effect the nut just the outer part of it. When soaking the nut will not the outer part drop off, which I assume is why we must be sure to drain off the water from soaking the nuts. Just asking.
There is a petition at http://www.livingnutz.com/ ( a place to buy raw almonds by the way) where you can sign a petition to get raw nuts back and labeled correctly. Just thought you might want to know. I hope it is OK to post a web address to another site.
Robyn, do you know if you’ll be able to do a group buy on raw almonds again this fall? and if you’ll be able to include we folks from the Northeast? I know you said you had some issue with shipping costs last time…. I’m almost through my 100 lbs and would be really bummed if I can’t get more!

oops, speaking of grammar…..I guess that should be “us folks”

Thanks for all the WONDERFUL comments. Regarding Theresa’s comment, I was told the same thing that the almonds were still raw after being steam pasteurized. The health food store said they sprouted them and when I soaked them, they tasted the same and felt the same as raw almonds that I’ve used in the past. Will dead almonds still swell and have that pop? I’ve bought truly pasteurized almonds and they did not swell the same
