Almonds instead of cashews in Hot Pink Breakfast Smoothie?
I can’t remember where I saw it, but I recall reading that almonds were a more perfect nut than cashews for a number of reasons, so my question is: why are there cashews in the Hot Pink Breakfast Smoothie? should we replace them with almonds??
Almonds are better, it’s true. Lower in fat, higher in nutrition, and can be sprouted if they’re truly raw (cashews are almost never truly raw–unless you want to pay $12/lb.). But cashews make things creamy in a way that almonds do not. You can try it and get back to me, but I think I’ve tried it and it’s just not the same.
That is a great question and I look forward to reading Robyn’s answer. I have a question of my own. I am new to this and I just made a green smoothie and I am wondering how many servings it is for myself and my family. I put this into it……
1 cup raw spinach,
1 cup raw kale
1 cup raw beet greens
1 cup raw swiss chard
2 frozen beets
1 cup of water
1 cup of blueberries
2 bananas
2 cups of raspberries
1 cup of watermelon
2 cups of kefir
It filled the BlendTech.
OK, so I was cleaning out the fridge!
It tastes great and I just had a full glass of it, but how many servings of raw fruit and veg did I drink? How can I figure it out? My 2 year old just drank a full sippy cup of it too. How many servings did I give her? Also, we are full…..should I count it as lunch or a snack? It seems like a lot of food to drink – and then to serve lunch in an hour. I am new to this……Also, how long will it keep in the fridge? a day or two? a week? an hour?
don’t know the answer to your q… but…wow Erin…that sounds delicious! enjoy!
Erin,
I count about 17 servings of fruits and vegetables. 1 for each cup of greens, 2 each for the beets (depending on size), 2 for the blueberries, 2 for the bananas, 4 for the raspberries, and 1 for the watermelon.
If it filled the BlendTec jar to the brim, that is 8 cups. If you drank 2 cups (a very big glass) you got 4 servings of fruits and vegetables.
back to the original question… i’ve added almonds, and just about any other nut i have on hand to the hot-pink smoothie, and it taste just fine
If you soak the almonds overnight in water it will give your smoothie a creamier texture like the cashew.
Katie I really appreciate your post (as well as Erin’s which started it).
I now have some idea of the size of a serving.
I am surprised how big it is. I just ate a can of green beans (yes it’s not so good but it’s not so bad either, except for the cheese I added. Hey I’m learning.) and it said it was 3.5 servings of .5 cup each.
Of course the raw takes up much more room than the cooked so that might explain it.
