WHY DO YOU USE FROZEN BERRIES?
CAN I FREEZE MY OWN INSTEAD?
I use frozen fruit/berries because it gives the smoothie a slushy texture and yummy taste. You sure can freeze your own berries or other fruit.I have frozen pears, apples, bananas, pineapple, mangoes, papaya, berries and cranberries in the fall. Also wedges of lemons, limes and tangerines.
I do both. When the berries are not in season, it is much cheaper to buy frozen to still enjoy what you love!!
Robin question for you-
My family is very new to all this and I wanted to know what you thought of hot dogs, bacon and sandwhich meat that is nitrate free or is there other stuff in it that is bad? I need to make one change at a time.
Thanks
Cheleen, I’m sure Robin has more to say about this but I just remembered this from her site… she talks about those things here: http://www.greensmoothiegirl.com/realworld.html. I hope that helps some. I know there is more to say about these things. Good luck making the changes!!
do you mean applegate farms meats? we use these on occasion–but I think Robyn’s point is that the protein from animal sources is what the china study found to hurt people. all the other crap that is put in animals and meats in addition to that is just more icing on the cake of “hi I’m here to become diseased” –anyway I don’t know much–I’m sure Robyn will answer
Disclaimer: I’m not a vegetarian, we eat meat about once a week.
That said, I wouldn’t eat pork ever for any reason. Also, when meats are labeled nitrite free, they’re usually cured with huge amounts of celery powder. Know what that does? Essentially it is a natural nitrite, so you’re getting the same effect. There’s just no good way to get that out and have the flavor that you’re used to.
If you want to eat lunchmeat, you can find some lunchmeat (mostly roast beef in my experience) that is nitrite free, but it’s hard to find. Anything smoked it out. If you want meat sandwiches, why not cook a roast or some chicken and make wraps? That way you can you load them up with veggies and gradually decrease the amount of meat included.
Nitrate free is better, but animal protein has so many other issues besides just those toxic chemicals. (Hot dogs are made from disgusting throwaway parts of pigs, chickens, or cows, and please read The China Study by T. Colin Campbell of Cornell University.)
I like frozen berries because they make the green smoothie NOT GREEN, and yes, you can freeze your own.
Few Questions –
Can ALL fruits and vegetables be frozen? What method do you recommend and have had most success with?
Also, what are your opinon on thos green bags that supposedly delay produce from spoiling?
Also, can ALL vegetables be conmsumed raw in the smoothies? Which ones cant and why?
Thanks.
All fruits and vegs can be frozen for green smoothies. Frozen greens or vegs don’t work for everything of course–thawed greens don’t work for salads!
Don’t know about anti-spoiling bags. Just keep your bananas and apples away from each other, and don’t put all the bananas together, if you want to slow ripening. I have lots of tips for various fruits (how to store them to help them last longer) in my new book. Which, frustratingly, is now not being released until Aug. or Sept.–sorry about that, I have no control over it.
I don’t know of any RIPE vegetable you couldn’t put in a smoothie. However, I like to stick to greens and not use the starchy vegetables, just because we need to maximize our greens, which we’re very deficient in. Root vegs are much higher in calories, lower in nutrients, and some people don’t do well gastrically combining them with fruit. But if you want them in your smoothie, go for it! I just prefer to do OTHER things with those foods.
Robyn,
Great info! ALthough those things are obvious to all – Im THAT new and grew up in a household eating no veg/fruits so its really new for me and info needs to be broken down – congrats on your book and looking forward to it – put me down for one…. Please provide the following:
Good Greens:
Starchy vegetables not recommended:
Good examples of root vegs:
Can one live on these smoothies alone?
Im on Day 2 and was craving REAL food yesterday – tips, advice?
Thanks.
Robyn, I was just about to email you about the book. I just got an email from Amazon saying they’re “still looking for it” and wondering if I wanted to cancel my order! I’ll wait happily
