are you gardening yet?

I hope you’re planting a garden, since it’s May 14 and prime planting season!   I am enjoying the sunshine and getting my hands in the dirt (that’s “grounding” that gives you lots of antioxidants, by the way).   This is my first year doing it solo, though, so it’s lots more work, turning all the soil by hand and stringing the 275 square feet of my rather ambitious garden . . . and then the planting, weeding, and tending  itself.

That’s okay.   It’ll give me more of a sense of accomplishment.

Tonight we had a salad from the lettuce I planted in the middle of the winter, now mature.   Read Ch. 5 of 12 Steps to Whole Foods for pretty much everything I know about gardening, plus my two favorite books on the subject, summarized.

I’m doing a few things I haven’t planted before: fennel (LOVE fennel bulb sliced in salads), cilantro, and collards.

Are you planting anything new?   Any of you planting a garden for the first time ever, using minimal space?   You will love it!

  1. We always put in a garden. We just have a hard time staying committed to it. The garden is in. I guess we’re doing peppers and have never really done that before. I’m really excited to get my Four Seasons Gardening book. Making so many Green Smoothies, I’m really interested in raising the greens year round for my smoothies.

  2. Love to garden! but have a lot of trees that I am not willing to part with. We do have some space. We planted last weekend. Having to replace my cucumbers that did not survive the last minute frost we had (even though we covered) and the green and yellow squash that broke in the high winds two nights later. Trying collards, celery and savoy cabbage new this year. Gave up on the green peppers but am trying serano and habanero.

    They sell cilantro at the market as a transplant but it seem not to do well. Talked with our CSA farmer and found out it does better from seed right in the garden. Likes the spring and fall better than the summer high heat. Going to try the seeds this year and see if that works any better.

    CSA starts in less than a month and we are really looking forward to that too.

  3. Self watering container gardening is a great way to get a lot of food in a small amount of space, and save money since you don’t waste water. There are a lot of resources out there for making your own out of cat litter containers or Rubbermaid containers.

    I tend to garden year-round, and the spring veggies are finishing up and the summer veggies and fruit are starting to produce.

    Two days ago, I harvested my first zucchini, and today, I harvested broccoli, strawberries, blueberries, and an artichoke. I still have quite a few carrots in the ‘fridge.

  4. I finally have my garden planted-yea! I can’t wait to see everything grow. I told my kids last night as we ate hawaiian haystacks how fun it will be when we can go out to the garden and get everything we need instead of at the store. I am planting chard, collards, spinach, kale, and romaine for the first time this year. We’ll see how it goes-

    I also have lettuce & spinach up – broad beans (I put some of the leaves in salads) are almost flowering, & the peas are ~ 2″ high. I love fennel, too – my son-in law loves kohlrabi – so that’s a new one for me!

    Made some fun muffins with dandelion flowers (just the yellow) & those were grand!! Most have already bloomed . . .

    I’m planting a red gooseberry & a purple berried (edible) rowan (mountain ash) had sweet red gooseberries at a fair last summer – yum!! I love currents, & have a couple of those bushes, & some raspberries & blueberries. I live in W Oregon – so can also garden year round.
