Is the China Study Bogus?

Dear GreenSmoothieGirl: The Oxford-Cornell China Project is irrelevant to us, because Campbell studied rats and mice, and then Chinese people. Not Americans.

Answer: I’m not going to comment much on the notion that Chinese and American people aren’t alike enough to compare. Either we all descended from apes, or we were all created from Adam’s rib, whichever belief you subscribe to, and we have the same essential biology, body systems, and health challenges. That’s like saying that if Big Macs aren’t good for women, they still might be good for men. Or that if Kool-Aid is toxic for children, it still might be good food for adults.

As for the animal studies that Campbell’s team conducted (which were duplicated by researchers around the world with consistent results), even they have profound implications for humans for four reasons.

First, humans and rats have virtually identical needs for protein. Second, protein operates in humans the same way it does in rats. Third, the percentage of protein consumption (20%) consumed by rats in the studies is the level of consumption in the typical American diet. And fourth, in both humans and rats, the stage where cancer is initiated is far less important that the stage where cancer is promoted. We all are exposed to carcinogens, but whether we end up with life-threatening cancerous tumors depends on whether or not those cancer cells are “promoted” with excesses of animal proteins.

  1. I’m new to hearing about The China Study (have only read the excerpt), but that was enough for me to finally do what I’d been told fifteen years to do. Comments like yours help reinforce the importance of this. Thanks for sharing.

Someone really said this to me, that Chinese people are so different from us as to make the China Study irrelevant. 🙂 You can find it somewhere on this blog, a while back. –Robyn

I actually read a lot of so-called criticisms on the China Study just online and the overall complaints were ONLY on the processes of his studies-which reaffirmed my long held belief that there are at least 2% of the entire population that you CANNOT please no matter what. That said, I feel like saying– WHO CARES–?! Like, who cares HOW people are taught to be healthier or eat better!! We should all know by now that the American diet is basically the worst on the planet, regardless if it’s compared to apes or mice or horses-while I believe we should all gain our own conviction of the lifestyle we choose, at this point, I almost just want everyone in the medical/diet community who has any pull in society at all to just preach whole foods–no matter what methods they have to use: JUST DO IT people! 😛 I know it’s unrealistic and it’s the devils plan and all that…but still, to hear criticism of a truly healthy lifestyle gets my blood boiling!

All we need is Oprah to come out and say “i drink one green smoothie a day” and probably 75% of the country would start it, lol!

I’m laughing so hard I’m going to pee! Just eat your veggies. If you need to sit at the table til morning…just do it. If you have to, put some agave on it and be done with it. Better yet…oh my oh my….I think Ms. Greensmoothiegirl said it best….drink your greens. Easy, quick, done.

We feel and look better than ever since we’ve been drinking greensmoothies and stopped eating carcasses. (Atleast 99% of the month anyway.)
