Calories per pound of foods
Interesting facts:
Raw vegetables contain 100 calories per pound
Fresh fruit contain 300 calories per pound
Animal flesh contains 1,200 calories per pound
Green vegetables are so massively nutrient rich and calorie minimal, you could literally eat them all day and never get fat. The more you eat, the more you lose! By working towards a diet that includes 2 lbs. of vegetables a day, you feel full and get tons of perfect nutrition. You also bump out the high-calorie stuff that not only causes disease, but also makes us fat. When you eat 2 lbs. of veggies a day (or as close as you can), your digestive system works easily, as it was designed to do.
I’ve worried about this in reverse – I wonder how I will get enough calories if I am primarily eating fruits/vegetables. I assume that the calorie recommendations are based on the average American, so do you need less when you’re eating more healthfully?
Robyn,
We’re cut from the same cloth and are definitely kindred spirits. I raised my 7 children with this eating program LONG before it became shi shi or even newsworthy. I appreciate the contrast between the VM and Blend Tec. All I’ve ever used was the Vitamix–didn’t know there was anything better–so thanks for the information.
I write for a cooking software company (their online newsletter) and I’d like to be able to quote you and refer people to your site. Is it possible to have a “blanket” slip of permission to include your information in my columns?
Finally, where are you located? I’m in Alpine, UT. I’d very much like to meet and visit about a few ideas I have. Your thoughts?
All the best, and bravo for the great work! A healthier planet, one meal at a time!

Hey Alice, I think you wrote this while I was out of the country, so I’m sorry I’m so late in finding this and replying (someone else was approving blog comments while I was gone). You of course have permission to quote away, at will–this is in the public domain, after all. And I’d be happy to chat with you.
Katie, if you eat a good combo of nuts/seeds (higher in calories) and legumes and grains, and eat till you’re satisfied whenever you’re hungry, your caloric needs are covered. If you have to actually worry about getting ENOUGH calories, well, you’re the only one.
