iron supplements
Q: Dear GreenSmoothieGirl, my little girl is anemic and also has been constipated for years. She is taking a prescription iron supplement and also Miralax. Couldn’t I tweak her diet for better iron absorption or something without overloading her on beef, liver, etc?
A: You’ve read about the beef recall. I would skip the beef, regardless of the recall but ESPECIALLY with that news. I would feed her my homemade granola (tons of fiber) sweetened with unsulphured molasses, which is rich in iron. The granola will address the fiber needs to ameliorate the constipation and help with iron uptake. Also, prunes will help with the constipation AND are high in iron–get raisins, green smoothies, and whole grains into her diet, because they’re all good sources of bioavailable iron.
I would definitely not give her a prescription iron supplement, which is not bioavailable (human beings cannot absorb metals or rocks, and metals are toxic and difficult to eliminate). And guess what those synthetic iron supplements cause? Right, constipation. Ask any pregnant woman who has been prescribed those terrible pills. In your daughter’s case, the cure may be (partially) causing the disease. Her elimination patterns should change just from the granola alone: I just filmed a YouTube demo making that recipe, though it won’t be posted for another week or two. Four new YouTube vids coming, so subscribe to me on YouTube–the first one we post will be Flax Crackers. Let me know how it goes!
Thanks, very informative. I was reading about how difficult it is for anyone to get B12… do you take any supplements? I’ve transitioned to a raw diet, and assumed all my needs are covered by the massive amounts of fruits and veggies I eat.
Bonnie, this warrants a thorough response, and I’ll take it on in a blog in the next week, okay? I’m going to include what Dr. Colin Campbell says about B12, and watch for my next free e-letter to answer your question about whether I take supplements.
I haven’t been on this this site for a few weeks and everyone is talking about B-12. I just bought some a few days ago! I just bought them from a company called NOW. Not sure is this is good…but I heard that their products are all vege based. I don’t like popping pills and these are great…they are lozenges and didn’t cost that much either. (Way less than the other B12).
Thanks for the info on the dairy and meat. I’ve been on line at http://www.kentuckyfriedcruelty.com. I’ll warn you…it’s isn’t a pretty picture. My husband will no longer eat anything anymore that has a face (except from bees). The other site we saw was a local meat factory that has abused their cattle. So, sad. And they are only 20 minutes from us and they fed our children that meat…and dairy! Thank God we are no longer buying meat and dairy from them. We are now buying RAW colostrum for our little girl. But after reading this…it will be her last pint of that!
I do like Hemps seeds. They have a special going on with Nutiva seeds/powder for the month of March at http://www.livingnutrionals.com. Just put in hemp10 and you’ll get even another 10% off your order.
Thanks so much Robyn, again, for changing our lives! You have opened our eyes to so much more than we ever knew. We feel better and eventhough we have spent more on certain items…we added it ALL up and it literally comes out the same when you subtract eating school food and replacing it with plant based food & home made treats, switching tons of vitamins for a GREENSMOOTHIEGIRL smoothie, eating at fastfood to making your own delicious recipes and eating at local vege houses….We just love you and thank God for you!!!!
Whoa…I spelled the website above wrong…it’s http://www.livingnutritionals.com. They are WAY cheaper than the store and WAY cheaper than Amazon!
Hi Robyn, Lab test came back with vit d deficiency & anemia. I am 55 years young & never been anemic in life. I thought I was outside enough, maybe my skin isn’t doing the right stuff?
Granola is always a good way to clean out your system:)
